The 12 Tasks of Asterix: The Place That Sends You Mad (widescreen)

  • My favourite scene from my favourite film as a child, in which the defiant Gauls have to endure twelve herculean tasks in order to prove their godhood to Ceasar and the might of Rome.
    After conquering athletes, magicians, nymphs and beasts, Asterix & Obelix face the deadliest challenge of all; accountancy, bureaucracy and bad customer service.

      Well that's still kinda logical in a way : I mean why would they send back clients who already know about and who are asking for something specific instead of going to check it themselves? It's their job after all, they have to get filled in on everything.
      But yeah I so wish this kind of trick would work irl, just for simple payback for all the trouble they put us through, especially here in France (cause yeah, don't forget that the Astérix & Obélix comics, and thus this movie, is French).

      Its because other than the guy at the front, everyone else only sees the people who were sent to them, if they don't know where to send Asterix they have to deal with him themselves, and if they have no idea about that form, then they will have to deal with it the next time it comes up. Its why asterix asked the one person who was having a good time gossiping, she had something she wanted to get back to, and was a window person who was supposed to "help" It then snowballed because they all know it will be horrible for them if they don't know what is going on, but since it was a wild goose chase it had no end point for them to reach, they just kept draging more people in.

      I notice that Asterix defeats a lot of the tasks that can't be bruteforced by simply tricking the taskmasters into trying to complete their own tasks. I'm starting to realise how silly the 12 tasks are due to them being technically designed by mortals, therefore the act of testing the divinity of Asterix and Obelix is as much hubris as attempting the 12 tasks.

    • @KingOfElectricNinjas
      @KingOfElectricNinjas Před měsícem +30

      It's quite common for Asterix in the movie and in the books. Especially since the Gauls are basically fighting a guerrilla war where their brute force advantage is situational, and they don't always have access to the magic potion, he uses the strength and resources of his foes against themselves. It's also a fitting allusion given Hercules is often shown to be quite cunning when his strength fails, and even in using his strength in the optimal way.

But to ask for the number you need to be resident of the department and show a proof of residency... Took me a month to get make up some papers saying I live there. I send in the papers wait 2 weeks to get the number. Go back to the current driving school to register, and they tell me since I have the written exam the number is useless... I remember reading a article on the various translations of the comics and they specifically mention a scene in Asterix in Britain. In a scene where a man is arguing with a fruit seller, the seller then smacks him with the disputed melon. In french Asterix asked "why is that man wearing a melon?", relying on the fact that the iconic British bowler hat is called Chapeau Melon in French. In the English version Asterix is silent and the fruit seller says something to the effect of "oh you want me to give it to you, do you?", making the subsequent image of the buyer wearing it more of a visual gag.

This comic/cartoon is a part of my childhood and it feels great to see that it could be the case for other people all around the globe. I think it's interesting to note that the french administration was something very special and the epitome of bureaucracy when this comic/cartoon was made. It is due to the fact that France has one of the biggest states of the Western world. It is historically the first modern state and it is actually really effective in comparison with other countries. But we also tend to have a tradition of harsh criticism about it and self-derision. For instance, this sentence of Courteline "Administration is the place where people who arrive late meet those who leave early on the stairs"

    I think my favourite part of this is while it is a great sendup of beurocracy gone up its own arse, is how it genuinely adheres to the format of a greek/roman myth.
    The heroes need a thing. They must go to a place that is out of the ordinary to obtain it. They find themselves stymied by the nature of this place and all their strength and power are of no use. But then they manage to turn the challenges nature on itself in order to triumph, and they leave sucessful, if only inadvertently.
    Not just satarizing one thing, not just two, but having those two subjects play off each other in order to make it work. Either a greek hero's task being dealing with beurocracy, or beurocracy bneing on the level of a greek hero's task. Fantastic writing.

It also means that the romans are also doing this sort of thing to themselves on the regular, at least in that town.

    During South America's military dictatorships of 1973-1980s, this is exactly how government departments were run. I experienced it as a kid, with mum and dad and later as a teenager when attempting to update my I.D. What made it worse is that a lot of people at the top got their positions from their 'friendly attitudes' towards the fascist states and not due to any form of competence or knowledge. I imagine it would have been the same throughout Asia, Africa, Italy, Spain and Germany, hence why this skit would ring so universal. Forms were usually type-written in triplicate and required stamping by different departments none in the same building or across town, none of which spoke to each other.
