Dy C The Recobbled Cut is a masterpiece. But, I gotta admit, this song and Jonathan Winters' voice over for the Thief make this version of the movie tolerable for me.
I recently watched The Recobbled Cut on youtube after reading over and over just how great it was. I have to say its honestly way over hyped and a fever dream of a movie that does not flow well at all. Its all over the place in whats going on and while it does have some fun scenes (Loved how the Thief in the end just gave up on the balls, that was funny) The animation is really all it has going for it and while the unfinished scenes are interesting it just is not all that great. Way over hyped and would have been a massive flop compared to what we ended up getting. The recobbled cut is just not that good, sorry. Its amazing what they managed to do to salvage the unfinished movie. Not saying its a masterpiece by any standard but I would take the original Miramax version over the fever dream randomness that is the recobbled cut any day.
I utterly loathe the Miramax cut -- except for this scene. All of the songs are thoroughly vapid but this one's annoyingly catchy and it's clear from the continuous movement that this was the work of Dick Williams' animators, not Fred Calvert's. Doesn't fit the story and the vocal differences are blatantly obvious, but it's more likable than it really has any right to be.
***** Clearly you misunderstood my comment; I'm well aware of the Recobbled Cut. Williams himself got the boot but some of the animators he trained remained with it. The work done by Fred Calvert's team was cheap and static like '80s TV animation but this scene's dazzling and filled with motion.
***** Disney was having hit after hit with animated musicals, so producers kept prodding Williams to include songs but he refused. After he was fired, songs were top on the agenda. The international version isn't Williams' vision but it isn't terrible (it has the songs but the story's moderately intact and it forms the backbone of the Recobbled Cut). However, Miramax was then recently-acquired by Disney, so they sneakily secured the American rights, cut scenes, added voice-overs, destroyed the story and gave it a limited release so the public wouldn't realize that they had completely ripped it off with their hit "Aladdin."
He should have paid more attention to the scenes that were vital to the story and plot of the movie instead of wasting time and money on overly complicated non-essential filler scenes.
