Adam's a big fan of mechanical puzzles that require users to separate interlinked pieces by manipulating them in novel ways, and he shares with us a recent favorite. This stainless steel Wavelinks puzzle from his friends at Craighill was just launched as a Kickstarter campaign, and Adam demonstrates why it's so satisfying to solve while admiring its metal construction.

*_I can solve all these puzzles. The trick is to not watch, look, pay attention to what you are doing; just let your hands wander and turn it as you are doing something else, like watching a movie._*
Do you know Chris Ramsay’s puzzle site? Solving 30.000$ puzzles, try find him, im sure you would love it ! Some insaine craftmanship to be displayed❤️💙
I love how much Adam can just show an appreciation for an object. He demonstrates how to be in the moment and to experience something that might seem so simple.
Adam! Huge thank you. We are all lifelong followers and fans of your work, it's incredibly fun to have it come full circle. So glad you enjoyed the Wavelinks!
Thanks so much Adam. Seeing and hearing you talk about our little puzzle is mind blowing. Such a great video. Cheers!
Couldn't agree more! :)
Chris Ramsey did this. Took him awhile to figure it out. Said same thing Adam did. Lots of fun after you know the solution.
I've been thinking about backing this ever since I saw Chris Ramsey's video on it. I didn't know they were doing an iridescent multi-color version. That sold me.
I have a whole bunch of Hanayama puzzles - they are small 2-6 part puzzles, mostly diecast, but they feel so satisfying in the hand, and all usually have the most unintuitive but ingenious solutions. They are just pleasing things to fidget with!
My guess is they use a Wire EDM with some sort of CNC movement of the piece to control the cut.
Wire EDM was my guess as well.
That's my guess. EDM with a rotary or something similar
The Kickstarter says it's done with ceramic shell casting.
I love puzzles like that. Going to have to look into it. Thanks for sharing.
I love Hanayama puzzles. I need to get me a some more.
Is this the start of Adams journey to create his own puzzle???!! 🧐 (I hope so)
Shout out to the ingenious Rod Bogart who designed this puzzle!
All praise to Rod!
Mr. Puzzle is a great channel if you like puzzling.
Adam’s joy is a gift
How do you know, you found your family? When 3 of your favourite content-makers solve the same puzzle, and you love each of their videos.
Well come on, share these other two lovely content-makers! :)
@@GlennCopeland mr puzzle and Chris Ramsey 😌
Thats funny, I have been considering backing this kickstarter for the last few days, but Adam giving it a good word seals the deal.
Very cool love it. Thanks for sharing.
I love how Adam is so childlike, not in the insulting way, but in the way he sees angles I never would, and doesn’t stop looking. Bro, if someone where to ask me who I want to be when I grow up.
Hey Adam, not sure since you didn't name any brands but Hanayama make some amazing handheld metal puzzles if they do interest you.
*beautiful puzzle...well worth the price given the precision and intricate design but currently just out of reach for my everyday gotta eat budget*
So interesting to see Adam showcase an art of play item. Worlds collide.
I have a collection of all the Craighill metal puzzles (Tetra, Tycho, Venn and Jack)... super heavy and well made. Nice display pieces too, besides fun to try and solve. One of a very few projects that I will gladly back on Kickstarter, as unfortunately too many turn into scams or never deliver.
This brings us much joy! We really appreciate the support and vote of confidence.
@@craighillcompany Just received mine today! Very happy, as with all of them.
@@csimet Awesome, so glad to hear it!
We all like the Ultra Watch
I completely understand that you don't want to know how it was made. It almost removes the magic from it in a way.
Wow nice cute rings
Thank you Adam sir.
I love the hanayama cast metal puzzles
Hey Adam, thanks a lot for your great videos. Quick question: what is that beautiful Band for your Apple Watch Ultra?
I skipped most of it. I'm eagerly waiting for my Wavelinks puzzle (Iridescent). I'm one of the many Kickstart campaign supporters. Now my package is at customs in Prague. Sometime it takes quite a long time - they're not very effective and are probably understaffed. I also found a nice stand with a free STL file and I ordered a print in a local place. Must say, it looks gorgeous. Congrats to Rod Bogart, it's a piece of art.
Hello. I watch all your videos. Thank you 👍
Very cool.
Dude.. it if like puzzles.. new Hellraiser movie is amazing. The new puzzle box..Exquisite
How are you liking your Apple Watch Ultra? What band is that?
would love to see adam make a metal or wood puzzle
Adam, you knowing about machining and cnc machine, i'm surprise that you did not figured out that those part were manufactured with a multi axis Wire EDM machine
I saw that and I love the look of it. Not sure I can afford it though.
That looks like a cool puzzle! I may buy one actually. What do you think of twisty puzzles (Rubik's cube type puzzles)?
I have and enjoy all sorts of puzzles. Take apart and put together ones, disentanglement puzzles, jigsaws, twisty puzzles, tile sliders, bead sliders (like the Hungarian Rings), and those dexterity games which I don't think are exactly puzzles, but I kind of class them as being in the same category of puzzles, they usually consist of a clear plastic cube with ball bearings inside that you have to position in a certain way.
That watch flex tho
big fan
EDM is a wonder of the machinist world. I've seen some pretty wicked things come out of EDM equipped shops.
Last year my therapist's evaluation for my Parkinson's impact went "all the way" up to the Craighill Tetra puzzle. I only know the name of it because the box was new. The guy had three others on his desk!
You should design and machine a puzzle then ask Chris Ramsay to solve it...I'd love to see that
I would think they're either cast or SLS, though the surface doesn't appear as rough as SLS would result in
Wire EDM 👍
That would be my guess too.
This, or possibly some very good 3D printing? LASER-sintered metal powered or something?
That price though...
My best guess for manufacturing is 3d printed wax models that are used to create sand casting molds. Then you polish the castings and get the parts.
The Wavelinks Puzzle is primarily manufactured using a ceramic shell casting technique. An extremely precise tool (or 'die) was machined to produce wax versions of the Wavelinks Puzzle components. Dozens of these wax components are attached to a long wax pole (or 'sprue'), and then the whole assembly is coated in a liquid ceramic slurry. The ceramic slurry is allowed to dry, and then 4 more coats are added (and dried) to strengthen this 'shell'.
Once the shell is complete it is placed into a kiln to melt out the wax, leaving a hollow ceramic shell. The shell is then filled with molten stainless steel (2750 degrees fahrenheit). Once the steel has cooled, the ceramic shell is broken open. The puzzle components are cut away from the sprue, cleaned, and inspected. There are additional intermediary and finishing steps to the process, but this is the general overview.
Adam, Please look up Chris Ramsey on CZcams. The man is a master of intricate puzzle solutions and slight of hand magic. If you wanna talk about meditative problem solving, combined with gorgeous beauty shots of the puzzle, this is the treat for you
oof, well that is well out of my budget... but it's wonderful to see it in videos for now I guess.
4:58 oil slick?
What's it like to hold the hand someone you love? Interlinked.
They're likely using a 5 or 7 -axis Wire EDM to cut those pieces.
It's 1d4 Psychic Damage
Is that Tamiya paintings in the back?
Says he's not going to solve it on video, but then solves it. That aside, for him, it seems that the bigger puzzle is how the individual pieces were made.
Are they maybe made by casting? The some of the texture on it looks like it might be a remnant of that. Just a thought.
What kind of watch is that?
Is their a specific term for solvable puzzles, vs flat 2d picture puzzles ?
By that I mean, these (and other) types of puzzles that you have to figure out the solve.
Because doing a search for puzzles, usually gets me the generic 1000 piece picture puzzles. Which aren't really the same thing.
Try searching for Mechanical Puzzles or Take-Apart Puzzles or even Burr Puzzles. We’ve curated a bunch of really neat puzzles in our shop so please have a look there too. Cheers!
@@Artofplay exactly what I was looking for. Thanks
Interlinked
Cut the donut then Wire EDM cutting them.
3:20 Isn't it just simply cast metal?
According to the kickstarter page, they use ceramic shell casting to manufacture the final product. I imagine the original was 3D printed, because machining it looks impossible.
Tempting but a bit more than I was hoping
"Within cells, Interlinked?"
Haven't heard the word 'kick starter' in years.
So... clickbait title, then. I thought you were above that.
Maybe they used a resin print with the print on a digital model.
Adam Savage - Chris Ramsey colabaration video please.
I would say they are cast stainless
When Adam says interlinked I say interlinked. Am I a replicant?
About manufacturing, I imagine it’s casted
Likely cut with wire edm
Donuts within Donuts interlinked, interlinked
The tatoo is, 'Your Arms-Length'.
If you want a leg up on working out how it was made, watch a few videos of drill bits or mill bits being ground out of solid stock. After watching enough it will 'click'. Then you'll wake up the next day and it will have 'unclicked'. Leastways that was _my_ experience in trying to get my head around it. Rinse and repeat until finally it clicks permanently. The result of grinding a simple shape through both rotation and translation at the same time is not intuitive.
edm cutting that is how it done. Should be no challenge to make there are some people doing it at home
There is 12 days to go.
Their goal was $10,000 and they're now at $421,000.........So it's happening!!!
Interlink
I would imagine that it's cut via wire EDM.
He mentions "Mastery" of these metal puzzles being different than the mastery we think of but doesn't elaborate any further. Does anyone know specifically what he meant? I've tried google searching but came up goose eggs
3:17 Wire EDM
Interlinked interlinked
@chrisramsay you should collab!
I would almost guarantee they are either cast using lost wax or 3D printed using a metal powder laser printer.
Donut’s have to be interlinked “interlinked
Wire edm
I bet it's 3D printed then polished
That's a cool puzzle. I wonder if they could make it out of wood.
We'd love to see this puzzle in wood, but I'm sure it would warp over time and not work as well as the steel version.
@@Artofplay It's been my experience that as long as you keep it indoors and dry, wood puzzles don't warp.
wire edm
Metal 3D printing. Show how it’s done before comes to market
If I had to guess, I'd say they were made by wire EDM.
Hows the Ultra Apple Watch?>
Hi Adam I have made a few puzzle boxes and have a small CZcams channel on fixing things. I would like to send you my latest puzzle machined out over a block of aluminum. If you like it I would really Appreciate being able to make another with you
Andrew
Bet that's cut with a water jet?
For those interested, Chris Ramsay solved this puzzle on his channel
Beautiful! All this video needs is a proper warning about what to expect when pledging to a kickstarter campaign. You don’t buy the object as much as buy into the idea and hope for an outcome in physical form one day.
O que esta te preocupando ? SAVAGE
Wire cut.
Wouldn't it be EDM?
Apple Watch Ultra
I see you got the Ultra, wanna talk about it in a video?
This title is a little bit on the negative end of the clickbait scale….
Ohh nooooo....
Where are your Speedmaster?
You changed to a 'Spy Kid' wanna be watch.
