Chunky Crochet Scarf for Beginners | Weekend Crochet Projects

- Learn how to make an easy to crochet chunky scarf for beginners in this easy crocheted scarf tutorial! This is a great crochet project for beginners because the stitches are placed in the stitch spaces between two stitches, rather than in the tops of the stitches as usual. I chose a chunky yarn for this pattern because as a beginner, thicker yarns make it easier to see your stitches clearly, and using a fatter yarn means the scarf will work up faster. You can make this scarf in any width and length you like. Since we aren't relying on stitch count, no need to worry about gauge.
I'll also walk you through Crocheting the Herringbone Half Double Crochet Stitch, which is one of the easy crochet stitches to use for scarves, and it works so beautifully here. This scarf is one of my go-to weekend crochet projects, as well as one of my favorite fall crochet projects. I hope it makes it to the top of your list as well!

Measurement: 6.75" width and 61" length
Yarn I used: Red Heart Soft Essentials Stripes in Linen Stripe
Yarn amount I used: I used a little over 2 and 1/4 balls or 248yds
Hook Size I used: size L 8mm metal Hook
You will need to buy about 3-4 balls of a level 5 bulky weight yarn for a scarf of the same size, depending on how tight or loose you crochet. More details in free pattern, linked above and in comments. Yarn linked below.

Hi- how many skeins did you need for the scarf size you made?
Hi Lystra, I used about 2 and a quarter skeins - so 3 skeins. You may need less or more depending on how tight or loose you crochet. The updated free pattern linked in my comment above has more info and exact yards used. Thanks for the comment and sorry for the delay in response.

I love that yarn! I shopped man yarn stores but the continuious color change with that sheen, makes the beauty of that scarf. Nice pattern also.
So true! The yarn definitely adds to the beauty of this scarf. I'm working on a version where I've used 3 dif colors and striped it myself. I happened on this video because I was looking for a different stich to make a couple scarves for my grankids.(22 & 10). This is perfect. It's unusual but not too difficult. I've been crocheting for many years. But I'm only good with scarves and blankets. I subscribed, so maybe I can try different projects. Thanks!

Hi, thanks for this great video. I am from Indonesia. Your tutorial is very slow, step by step and i don't miss every chain until the end rows. I am a little bit confiouse about your double crochet is different, i usually get 4 loops, but is oke the result is good. Thank you very much.
