Why Sacred Icon is the most underrated Halo mission

- Sacred Icon? More like Sacred iconic amirite? :^)
For real though, I feel like this mission is overly criticized and/or glossed over far too much, so today I want to explain why I don't think it deserves to be!

I would like you to cover the missions, "The Ark," "The Covenant," and maybe a couple of missions in Halo 4. Midnight perhaps? Halo 4 doesn't get enough love.
Play THE COVENANT!!!!!!!!
"Stupid Jackal, say thank you."
Jackal: "apdwdpiasjfzpsgf"
"Me suck lot less with good gun you know"
Sacred Icon always scared me, it always had this vibe that screams at you "Hey! Something's not right!"
You ignore that voice for the first while until you find the flood. Then you realize, that voice wasn't lying.
Just like the level 343 guilty spark, but less ominous.
I agree
Random Leveled Loot when I was a kid and got to the marine part when the flood came after me I would always jump off the edge because I was so scared
And then you're like SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT SHIT!!!
@@notalive5479 I think it's actually more ominous. 343 was downright spooky, with this it's the narrative weight - the intention of the Arbiter and the Covenant and the foreknowledge that it's all a lie - I suppose if ominous isn't the right word FOREBODING definitely is.
Can't forget that brute with the mad piloting skills at the start
Tartarus: Turn us around, you fool! Fly straight!
Lol
Hmmmm... I have a slight suspicion that HiddenXperia likes the Arbiter.
🤔🤔🤔

Anyone else see that in the cutscenes the phantom was flying backwards
Yep saw it and it cannot be unseen O_o
coolguy27 bloody Brutes don't know how to fly.
Which cutscene first one?
Opening cut scene of the mission, in the Blur Cinematics.
Millions of dollars spent on those cutscenes, for them to get something so simple wrong. It annoys me everytime I see it.
coolguy27 Yup
When I was young and played this mission for the first time I realized something was wrong, I noticed all the dead bodies and when I stumbled across the few remaining grunts and Jackals I got a sense of companionship in a place where I felt strangely alone, I was scared of the flood at the time, so I thought to myself, “we're here alone, so we're gonna get through this together”,so you can imagine the Utter dismay and awfulness when 1 by 1 I failed to protect them from the Flood hordes that came for us.... it's hard to explain, especially when the grunts said things like "Arbiter is our savior" and "please, no make me go back!” As a child I sort of felt a sense of responsibility to lead them out of there, so that's probably why I feel strangely bad, I kinda felt like I failed them is a sense......
But it made me even more pumped when Rtas made his speech, it gave me that same sense, but like now we were going on the attack.
So awesome
This is actually very poignant to read, thanks for sharing.
God, this comment gave me so much awesome nostalgia.
Thank you!
Lol why did everyone feel like this has a kid I remember playing halo 2 in like second grade my cousins had Xbox and I hated playing missions without teammates I always felt scared
Scared, the flood will do that to you
Sacred Icon is one of the best missions. Introduces the Enforcers which in my opinion are far better than prometheans. Sentinel Majors are also included. The level design is fantastic,Music is beautiful and watching the sentinel factory crash awesome
Ive also imagined some ODSTs with Keyes and Johnson moving through the facility and it's so dark and ereery. And the flood ambushing them and hell breaks lose. amazing mission
The original Forerunner entities in Halo are the Sentinels, Enforcers, Constructors, and Monitors.
Yeah, I get really triggered when someone says sacred icon is one of the worst halo levels.
I love how it takes place in a cold, wintery place. And how the Flood... are actually smart, and they can drive and know how to ambush.
14:59 if you look up, you can see the sentinel factory in the sky get shot down. The same one in the next mission that you travel through. Little easter egg and fantastic attention to detail.
I can't see it.
Oh, I thought you meant in this vid. Replaying the game myself, I saw it
All I want in Halo 6 is playable Elites with Full Customisation
Dusty vHD Same
I will punch a kitten if they dont add it
You know they removed them for a reason and that reason is their hit box because of how sleek and streamlined their heads are it is much harder to hit an elites head rather than a Spartans giving the elites an unfair advantage I’m not gonna go in depth with this but I’m pretty sure there is a video on it
Soundgarden XIII no but bungie/343 did so
Soundgarden XIII unless they add a elites vs elites or Spartans vs elites Game mode, if they don’t I don’t think we’ll see playable elites ever again
Lol who else would just restart from checkpoint just because a grunt or jackal died
Only for the grunts tbh
That was me dude but did any body give the jackal the plasma rifle on the ground
Me
I hit that Revert to Last Checkpoint like there’s no tomorrow any time one of my elites goes down
Oh man, you don't know what people are capable of.
On Floodgate the Marines say
"Multiple contacts, unknown hostiles"
"There! Over There! We're surrounded, Sergeant!
Alex Reid negative, they are NOT covenant
Yes yes yes yes floodgate is best
I always thought those were the least interesting parts of the atmosphere in halo/flood levels. Just way too on the nose.
In original graphics the terminal you use to exit the sentinel wall has 6 fingers on it.
also the last chapter of the mission, title is the 100,000 year war is alluding to the forerunner flood war.
remember the old guard bungee envisioned forerunners as ancient humans.
creepy stuff
NumerableRaptor dear lord halo was heavy shit. back in the day. miss it
I thought it alludes to the war on halo
@@prophetofgrunt2088 That's exactly what it alludes to - the fact that the sentinel/flood battle has been going on within the Quarantine Zone for literally thousands of years, unending. Ceaseless. Don't ask me how the Flood was able to keep up the fight for that long. It must've just been spamming infection forms the entire time.
@@fuzzydunlop7928 The Oracle on Delta Halo was extremely incompetent, so much so that the deeper layers of AI in the systems had to force mayday signals to anyone who would listen to help contain the Flood. The Ring itself was screaming in pain, not to anyone that would come to it to help to contain the flood, but rather to contain the flood by staying very far away.
However, the Covenant thought that the Forerunner on Delta Halo were "unworthy," and given such a curse of the parasite for their failings and believed it was up to them to join the more godly in the "great journey."
Delta Halo is by far the most visited system by meddlers, which is partly how the flood managed to stay alive there for so long.
THANK YOU! And what about how 343 Guilty Spark in Halo mentions a conversation he had with Chief "before", where he asked if he would still do it (activate the Ring)? I need to find an essay bringing that fact, and the fact that OG Bungie saw Humanity as Forerunners, and all the other points which indicate an extended story/lore involving some sort of time-travel/viewing time as non-linear and crazy shit about humanity being Forerunners/Precursors.
Glad I'm not the only one who appreciates just how expertly crafted a mission Sacred Icon really is.
Halo 2A does have the best skyboxes without a doubt.
Ross Graham well halo 5,4 and reach were really good to in my opinion
Fair enough, it's your preference after all. ;)
Sir Ross McGraham
Holy s*** someone isn't be toxic about other people's opinions
It's something I learnt after leaving the Fallout community. ;)
i personally like the old skybox in this mission tbh but otherwise i agree
The Mission "Quarantine Zone" From Halo 2 is The Most Unique and Badass Mission Out of The Entire Franchise in My Opinion
Quarantine Zone is my personal favorite Flood mission. The rocking soundtrack, working as a convoy as vehicles through the level, and seeing the Flood actually use vehicles is super fun. I'd love to see you do a video covering either Assault on the Control Room or The Covenant.
EDIT: It makes me a little sad that you didn't stop to take notice of the sentinel factory in the sky getting shot down which creates the structures that you run through in Quarantine Zone.
So many people overlook it. :/ They don't even realize what they're going through when they go through it - they're just like "oh burned building or something"
I never knew what that was, that's actually dope
@@relt745 Which factory? tell me

I would actually like a spin off series that focuses on the Arbiter! I like the arbiter more and find him more interesting than chief! Hopefully I am not the only one who loves Arby!
Dusty vHD
While I'm a Chief fan, Arbiter was the reason Halo 2's plot was so well done. His character arc throughout was the best piece of Halo writing besides Halo 4 imo
Tell me about it man...
Dusty vHD I'm absolutely the same. It's why Halo 2 is my favourite Halo.
Patrick Hild "Tartarus... the Prophets have betrayed us..."
The Arbiter's realizations and revelations in Halo 2 were honestly incredible. You realize how soul crushing it is to him, and how he realizes his entire life has been a complete lie.
Laces115
Exactly! The Arbiter (ironically) is one of the most human-like characters in Halo 2. I actually felt bad for him and rooted for him the entire way through. Arbiter to me is what made Halo 2 great
Ok I love this mission as well but does anyone else cringe when the beginning cut scene is bright daylight and then when the player takes over it is dark? Sorry to point that out but it really bothers me O_o
Ebomb 113 This always bothered me lol
Yeah , that's one detail that they didn't get right in the anniversary version .
nonsense he just sat their fapping for a few hours before he went and did his job as all men do
^^^
ROFL!
One final fap before he may possibly die in that mission (He doesn't but during that time he didn't know)
lol
Azarith wow sexist
I think the word you were looking for was "fact" not "'meme". It's pretty hard to mix up the two.
It's 2017, everything is a meme

Halo 3 The Ark ...Could be my favorite mission...ever...I think
AnotherCrazyCroft the intro to the Ark was amazing! weve only heard about the ark and never saw it until that moment. great climax to a great game
I loved these brutal vehicle sections! XD
They taught me how to drive vehicles better. Especially the warthog. That Mission is a good Training simulation.
1:58 when tow mater from cars reincarnates as a phantom
Dave Strudle you fucking legend
Honestly, as hard as it was, my favorite flood mission was actually Cortana. I can't tell you how many times I died on heroic/legendary. But in it there's not one, not two, but three extremely satisfying moments: When you finally rescue Cortana, when the Arbiter shows up to help you, and when you finally finish the level.
The first one is pretty obvious. You're fighting the flood in a more confined space than what you were in in The Library. Ammo is rather scarce depending on what weapons you choose to use. And you have the Gravemind taunting you almost every step of the way. Who wouldn't be satisfied to put an end to that with the finding of Cortana? Plus it shows how much Chief cares about keeping the promises he makes despite Cortana's rationalization that he may be too late.
Next, you have when the Arbiter shows up. Cortana is (as) visibly (as she can be, being in Chief's head and all) surprised to note a "friendly contact" and even more so to find out who it is. On top of that is the badassery that is our boy Arby that he just mows through every bit of Flood that comes their way as High Charity is about to blow. And the cherry on top of it all is it shows that Arbiter genuinely cares about Chief. I think it's here where Arbiter starts to consider chief as more than an ally, but a friend as he has told Agent Locke (sorry, I refuse to acknowledge Locke as a Spartan).
And then you get to the end. You have Cortana. Arbiter has come to your aid. But still there doesn't seem to be a way out. Until you find that seemingly crashed pelican in what used to be the mausoleum of the arbiter. And it's operational. Even though Gravemind makes one final (futile) attempt to trap you with its tentacle, as if to say "if I go you're coming with me." Seriously. The details. It almost overshadows the satisfaction you get from actually completing this mission that might just be the hardest that Halo 3 has to offer.
Am I the only one that's noticed the ship flying in at 1:58 is flying backwards?
i think quarantine zone is the only mission in halo history where you can shoot at enemy unsc Marines and they shoot back, at the beginning you can see a marine pelican carrying a tank above, if you are quick enough you can kill them or provoke them to shoot back
I could be wrong but it's after you get the tank from the flood then you drive outside and you can see a pelican flying away
Notasia the flood are the ones that are piloting the pelicans and stuff
That Pelican is probably piloted by a Marine because the gunner behind is also a Marine.
czcams.com/video/IrfJwijFjMs/video.html (nice sword flying)
The blue cube, that's definitely piloted by marines it shoots at the flood and a marine will fallout if destroyed.
Do the level Metropolis from Halo 2! I want to see your take on the Covenant invasion on New Mombasa!
I made a Sacred Iron-like arena map (pvp) in halo 5 in forge.
its called Installation 05 arena
or just look up the tag "sacred icon" if you want to see it
The sacred Icon is probably one of my fav halo missions of all time especially in the original graphics, from everything to the scenery to music, it is really atmospheric and amazing
My girlfriend hates when I watch your videos because of your "lisp" but it's just too good Halo content lol
WhyBeUgly so u can't watch him because of a lisp that's stupid
Charlie Smith Did you even read the comment?
Dump your gf then... What a bitch.
it's funny you hear his voice and expect a glasses guy with freckles but damn is he hot
Connor O'Neal *shudder*
I remember when I was younger, I thought this was the longest and most enjoyable mission. I used to think the arbiter deserved so much after everything he had fought for.
The music of this music really sells it though, and with quarantine zone its possibly the best halo 2 mission
One of my favourite things about this mission is Tarturus speaking on the radio with deep gravely voice,
1:58 Why does the Phantom fly backwards????
They did it for GTA style points.
@Melissa Waterman Millions of dollars to craft these cutscenes-kind of funny, for sure.
Really loved that level. You also had Covenant allies, and if I remember you were vs Sentinels and Flood. Always tried to keep my grunt buddies alive. Jackal allies were special.
I always save the grunts and jackals and have a little army by the end of the section before they're killed by the enforcer sentinel
I like the flood in halo 2 3 and wars 1
I would love to see you cover the Gravemind mission in Halo 2. I liked the feeling of the three way faction battling through High Charity. From the Covenant to the Covenant Separatists, and the smaller human group in between it all with Chief leading the charge. It felt awesome to play. Remains as one of my favorites.
The best obviously the Library.
I was kidding I hate that mission
It's so cliche to hate The Library - I think it's fine. It's only like twenty minutes long - it serves a thematic purpose because up until then and 343 Guilty Spark we've seen the beauty of Forerunner architecture and design - now we see the beast, the uncaring nature and the hubris of both the creations and the creators. It's a slog, and you realize that 343 has uncaringly teleported OTHER humans into that hellhole without a second thought - chief wasn't the first "reclaimer" - that's fucked.
"Cortana" is the shits, though.
It was so fun playing this mission late at night in the dark such spooky vibes
These type of video are GREAT! Keep going man! :D
you completwly failed to acknowledge th fact of the sentinel factory falling oit of the sky right when you meet uo with the elites ;-;
Kryin Hydraxis I’ve always wondered how that got destroyed.
335is it got destroyed by wraiths
Oh, I was unaware that those tanks could shoot that high.
I love this mission too . The atmosphere is great and there's a sense of detail that I really appreciate . Plus , it's the only mission in the entire halo saga where you can fight alongside jackals .
By the way I absolutely love your background on your PC's behind you. It's really damn cool.
I played this mission god knows how many times. I loved this mission and the first mission with the arbiter. My 2 favorite missions when playing Arby.
I was playing on Sacred Icon today on legendary and I managed to sneak past the first foggy room and reach the bridge seen at 12:23, I had the mythic skull with me too, suddenly all the flood I had snuck past came at once, the entire bridge was covered in them, I was so relieved when the sentinels saved me!
It'd be amazing if you made a throughout analysis for every mission in every Halo game. I know it'd be a lot of work but man, that'd be incredibly fun! These two analysis for Sacred Icon and Uprising made me LOVE them even more! Thanks for the amazing videos...
Luc, I love your videos and I really want to see more of these playthroughs :)
Loved this mission and taking out the flood, its creepy it brings back that creepiness from the first time we meet the flood
One thing I found interesting was in the beginning cutscenes, where the Arbiter turns around, weapon raised, as chief does in Halo 4. I don't know if that means anything, but just something I've noticed.
Also the next mision when you are on the way to the library trying to get the icon before the humans, far away from your home, crestfallen, dishonored, betrayed... But when you lose everything... You also lose the fear... Figthing the most terrifying enemy of the galaxy, in a place that matchs the last circles of the hell , seeing your last comarades falling next to you its inspiring as fuck, I remember when I played this by first time, I was 10 I didnt realize of all the stuff that was going on on the background till 2016... Im glad with Bungie because of this game, this game inspired me enough to try to write my own sci fi stuff, I love your videos remarking all those things that I love from my favorite games... Its like travel back on time and get shocked like the very first time that I played this shit (and sorry about any mistake that makes your eyes bleed I understand english mostly than talk it how ever i did my best)
Imagin a game where you control the flood from feral to keymind
I LOVE THESE VIDEOS DUDE PLEASE KEEP DOING THIS FROM YEAR ON
You should have added a part about the sentinel factory getting shot down. That's an awesome part
@15:00 You missed seeing a sentinel ship get blow out of the sky by flood controlled wraths. When you finish sliding down the shoot to outside you look at the sky to see it happen. And in the next mission you go inside the crashed sentinel ship after enforcers come out of the fire drenched wreckage to fight a scorpion tank (and probably you). Bungie really put a lot of detail into their games and it saddens me that there's a lot of people who played them for so long but never noticed those details.
Really liking these! You have an awesome perspective on these missions. I always wondered if anyone else sees all the love, detail, and painstaking effort put into these games. With all the hatred and dissent concerning the franchise, this is a refreshing watch.
15:20 You hear that noise on loop every minute or so in the background ambience noises of the flood maps in multiplayer and missions that make you exclusively fight the flood in halo wars.
Just subbed to you, I've not played halo in years and you've just got me back into it.
I love this video so much he broke it down how i seen it all those years ago man he explained it beautifully nice going man thumbs up
Don't forget the grunts screaming in joy/fear as they fall down the tubes.
what I loved on this mission aswell is the very small detail, that you can open these block doors by shooting at them. these little forerunner drones that fly around there open them all the time with their tiny lasers and you can do that too by giving energy weapon-fire to the button.
Floodgate has always been my favourite flood level, it was always fun trying to save as many marines as you can
Now that I look at this mission, there is a high possibility that The'l Vadaam has been infected by the flood. He breathed the spores in so much in this mission I would think. Think about it: Exactly how much spores are there in the entirety of this mission and how much of it has already been breathed in? That's more than enough to pulverize High Charity and Earth twice.
dude i expanded on your flood horror game idea so much ive thought of multiple areas to go to
Best halo CZcamsr ever honestly love your vids man keep up the good work
Halo 2, High Charity level. I think that is one of the most atmospheric levels in all of the Halo series. We see the centre of Covenant power, already devastated by civil war, falling to the parasite and all remaining Covenant forces still alive in the city having to band together to try and survive the Flood's onslaught. It perfectly shows the Flood's takeover of the Holy City, and its conversion into a Flood Hive. I think it's the perfect level for this series.
The flood scream also is in halo wars on the flood maps. You sometimes hear it in the background.
"complaint about halo 2s stop and wait wave defense"
*plays the library 17 times in a row*
This is something on which I totally agree with you. This and the Quarantine Zone were missions that unnerved me as much - if not more - than 343 Guilty Spark which had its own mastery of ambiance. Even though you've already faced the flood multiple times by this point, the narrative context of the situation and the mythic nature of the flood infestation - essentially a centuries-long perpetual war between sentinels and flood inside of this dome - that you will now hand over to the flood on a silver platter, all to prove to your betters that your people are worthy - and the entire purpose - the Great Journey - is a LIE. This has so much gravitas it's actually incredible - this is why all of the action scenes and Cortana-Chief melodrama just doesn't get me like a long fall down a narrow piston.
You know I never thought about it before but you're right. This kind of environmental, ambient storytelling is exactly what's missing in the newer Halo games. Until tonight it had flown completely over my head that Arbiter was *releasing* the flood with his actions. I had somehow just taken it for granted that the human and sangheli hosts had been there for thousands of years, which of course on reflection makes no sense.
In spite of that, I still loved this level. It gave you the sense of being alone in a distant, hostile land trudging through unfriendly artic 'wilderness' even though technically it takes place entirely in a architected environment and you're surrounded by enemies. The way it makes you feel small and solitary by having the enemies mostly focused on each other instead of you is brilliant. The flood fog is a great way to bring anticipation and fear to flood encounters while also foreshadowing them in a way that builds dread.
Really that's the whole level in a few words: Dread, melancholy, loneliness. Even when you finally meet up with your reinforcements, you understand they'll quickly be consumed by the flood. I've never felt happy to see them, only somber that I'm about witness their deaths. The introduction of new enemy types and unusual allies like jackals helps cement the alien surrealism of what you're experiencing. On your first play through you have no idea what to expect, things are changing rapidly and anything could happen.
Want Flood creepiness? Gravemind Halo 2. Utterly detested playing that level, at some points i just stopped playing it during my first run-through of the game simply because of the damn environment XD that and Cortana Halo 3.
XLegionarre716X
your confusing Gravemind with High Charity, mate. Gravemind is the level that starts you off in the room where Truth is giving his speech and Chief spooks a grunt. High Charity is the level where the flood have invaded.
For me it was The Library on Halo 1 lol
@@JonathanX95xboxlive The Library is a good follow-up to 343, but because 343 is pretty much the apex of the game and it's all downhill from there it gets a bad reputation - The Library didn't do ANYTHING that any of the subsequent levels also did - from re-used maps and assets to repetitive gameplay.
that's definitely high charity you're speaking of...up there in creepiness with 343 Guilty Spark in CE,, and most definitely Cortana in Halo 3
i screamed internally every time you skipped a blue sentinel beam
1:59 the epic flying backwards ship
that "eerie whirring" noise that is "beyond your perception" is the small laser drone sentinel things flying around...
Halo 2 is my favorite game of the franchise and it's the only one I like the most out of all of them. It was so well put together. Gameplay was solid, the story beautifully told, and the soundtrack was just amazing. So everything you explained I totally understand. I always loved watching the NPCs fight each other.
Great video as always! Good luck with your exams! Could you do a video like this on 343 Guilty Spark? Such a fantastic mission
I totally agree with you. I remember reading that the elites were based off of the ways of the Samurai.
In the anniversary graphics, you can see this weird black stair-case looking object when you are looking out towards the library on the platform after you go down the first and second shaft. It looks like a reflection of the shaft you go down.
OFC IT WAS,I WAS ALWAYS COMPELED TO REPLAY IT AND SOMETIMES CREEPED OUT.IT SO PERFECTLY INTRODUCED ALL FORRERUNER CONSTURCTS,MARINES VS FLOOD AND SHOWED SOME REALLY BEAUTIFUL BUT DESERTED BACKGROUNDS
Fun fact about High Charity: the San'Shyuum were messing with some Forerunner artifacts on their homeworld and it blew off a chunk of the planet. That chunk is now the dome of High Charity.
When i played sacred icon in 2004 when I was 12 I was scared for most of the part it was the only time I ever got scared by the flood besides the introduction to them i kinda liked it at the first part of the mission but in the middle when you just fight the flood for a while I found myself just using stealth and it was kinda boring but then at the end I started to like it again but yea I consider it very underrated
wtf why did they tone down the sp00ky fog so much in the remaster??? WHAT WERE THEY THINKIN?????
MODERN GEN XD
This is nothing compared to how they butchered 343 Guilty Spark.
Great vid dude keep it up! But I wondered were did you get these beautiful backgrounds on your PC?
iVoidx Great! Thank you very much
13:35 who remembers looking at the library as a kid
This is one of my favorite missions, the look of it is very beautiful, variety of enemies, and the layout of it.
loved the video so much. I think you should keep doing it like this. :)
When I first played this mission I laughed when he said that they lost a lot of brutes. I think that it was hilarious that the new troops weren't failing one of their first mission as the prophets' hand.
11:39 There's something in the mist!
I still love how, even in anniversary graphics, the Phantom is flying backwards in the cutscene.
i like the idea that the first time you see the brutes outside of cutscenes is just like. a corpse
When someones face doesn't match there voice
-_- why
Why does everyone say this? To me he looks exactly like how he sounds. What did the rest of you imagine him to look like, based off his voice?
Finally someone did a vidios on this mission.
I love this mission so much.
Gives those vibes from when I was a kid
you brought up a lot of things i didn't even consider.... i need to analyze the missions more because i love that you brought up how these elites are trying to contain a beast the gods they worship failed to do
I was a little kid when I first played this mission. The flood truly scared me and I quit playing for several weeks before I gutted up the nerve to keep playing it
I always thought this mission was the scariest aside from High Charity and Cortana growing up, and the funnest to play. That noise you mentioned, I always thought it was the metal of the sentinel wall being ripped open by the flood or the grave mind trying to increase its mass.
Something you missed mentioning at the start, the balcony looks down on the previous mission you played as the Master Chief. I spent a good half hour just looking out over that balcony.
Probably my Favourite Halo mission, yes I tried to save the grunts and jackals hundreds of times over...anyone ever save them? 😢 Halo 2 is hands down the best game
I love this level for 1 thing getting the grunts and jackles to the flood last time got all of them there so much fun watching them try to survive but die
Halo 2 anniversary had me sit in awe at the scenery in many missions for at least 10 minutes each. I get too caught up in scale and thought I just stare and trapped in its beauty.
