The Flood outbreak on Delta Halo was one of the most important aspects of both Halo 2 and Halo 3, and yet, the games never explained how it occurred. Today, we're diving into the mystery of how the this outbreak began, and how it was ultimately contained.

What the heck did they infect to form a Gravemind?
@@Nephalem2002 It isn't a single host, Graveminds are amalgamations of biomass, usually combat forms too damaged to keep fighting, or bodies too mangled to infect.
You had one job man. One. Job.
If cold storage was hosting a gravemind or even a proto-gravemind, isn't it possible that the FLOOD hacked the teleportation grid? We see the gravemind use it in Halo 2, so we know it's possible.

"...Glassed into submission, effectively containing the entire outbreak."
*sees In Amber Clad crashing into High Charity with flood infection forms*
"Contained."
And then The Banished enter the wreckage of High Charity on The Ark close to a decade later, leading to another outbreak.
This line also bothered me. What about halo's honey comb system of underground networks? The only way of containing the flood once it got out is to essentially destroy the ring all the way down to space. And even then, it would've spread throughout the entire ring through these networks making it quite impossible to contain without simply destroying the whole ring. The only way this glassing would've worked is if the flood did not go underground as there isn't food there but rather it stayed on the surface to secure ways out. This doesn't seem like a smart move to do for the gravemind to not have backup plans.
I'm reminded of "He's only *mostly* dead!"
Except in this case "they were *mostly* contained...."
@@W0ngnim I’m assuming, since they glassed it, it would have sealed the entrances to the infected tunnels. The flood isn’t dead, it just couldn’t get out due to a thick wall of melted and solidified matter
How did In Amber Clad get into High Charity? I played halo 2 multiple times and still don’t get how or when In Amber Clad got in there, and what Miranda Keyes was doing that whole time

My theory is that the other two Monitors had quirks/hobbies, Guilty Spark went to nearby planets, and Exuberant Witness made herself a zoo of species and things, my theory is that Pagent Tangent purposly did an outbreak to try and contain it but got out of hand. Though that doesnt really connect with the Meddlers theory or why Cold Storage wasent aware of the monitors presence there when initiating the outbreak
Don't forget that spark ejected random stuff into space occasionally

Didn’t Guilty Spark also run into a possible advance life form thousands of years before combat evolved? I remember something about a ship crashing into Alpha Halo and Guilty Spark hailing the ship to see if anyone would respond. It was in those Guilty Spark stories from either the Combat Evolve or Halo 2 remaster. Could they be related to these Meddlers?
Yeah but Guilty Spark mention there no signal of live but a help beacon that eventually disappear
Yeah the one and the same in CE Guilty spark mentioned it was too early for any galactic lifeform to gain spacefaring tech
@@rogierb5945 yes but the beacon stop the transmition after a couple weeks
My theory is that on the rings itself, there are those few amounts of flood locked inside those research facilities. Maybe not on all Halo rings, but on these ones particular for now.
When the locked flood on Halo 04 at the beginning of Combat Evolved was released and assimilated some humans, it learned how to use weapons, spaceships and how to speak, basically everything that a human knows. Having not enough biomass to control a spaceship, the flood part locked on Delta Halo wasn't able to escape by a portal and could physically not escape because of the tons amount of water that got put artificially above it. When the covenant tried to kill Chief on Delta Halo after he killed one Prophet, they opened the way for the gravemind to be free and spread across the whole Delta ring. Assimilating more and more biomass, then even infected that UNSC frigate above the library, giving it the ability to teleport chief + the frigate itself inside high charity.
The flood assimilated the biomass to whenever any flood is contained, it goes fury and assimilated that biomass. So if that form of a gravemind, that is able to know everything the past graveminds know, shares its knowledge with another gravemind (example the one on Delta Halo), then this gravemind works as a connector or transmitter of knowledge so the assimilated biomass and its knowledge can be passed no matter how large the distance. Time doesn't matter, its basically a click effect and a chain reaction.
Well, the flood is really dangerous xD
meddlers = endless they would be the ones who are un affected by the flood and would like to take over the world. may have released it to try and make it uninhabitable or dangerous for non endless species, just a thought

The theory of crippling loneliness causing rampancy does actually have precedence. If you read Hunters of the Dark, a joint Human/Sangheili team return to the Ark to investigate and stop a mysterious countdown that would've reactivated all remaining Halos. During the course of their mission, they encounter a monitor that had hitherto remained unknown, likely due to what happened on the Halos in 1 and 2. It had gone so rampant, it changed its own name and sent miner sentinels and other attack units to Earth via the portal that links the Lesser Ark to the Greater Ark. Its intent was to mine the Sol system for metals required to repair the Greater Ark after it was severely damaged when Chief fired the incomplete Halo. So while I'm not saying that this is definitive proof for the rampancy caused by loneliness theory, it does certainly lend credence to it.
Simple, 2401 Penitent Tangent was the monitor of shittyness seeing as he allowed the flood to break out after only 218 years
Still wanna know how exactly, it's not like the Forerunners would've been careless in picking the right monitor for such an important job lol
@@HiddenXperia yeah, also are all monitors created from composed beings or is it just Chakas to Guilty Spark and that Forerunner who became 000 Tragic Solitude? If all of them are then the Forerunner who became Tangent could have been one of those who was mentioned by the Librarian in Halo 4 (how they tried to use composers to prevent flood infection but the results were abominations) and could have had his infection go from physical to logic plague
000 Tragic Solitude was from a composed Forerunner.

Next video topic. The Meddlers.
Yes, Please
Yes!
I thought Meddlers was just a blanket term for any non-human race that disrupts normal operations?
My theory is that they could be a surviving population of ancient humans who who fled to a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way after the war watching and waiting until the storm had passed. This is the only possible way that I could see an entirely different civilization access a Halo (or any forerunner tech for that matter) so easily and so soon after the firing of the array. I’d bet on the Small Magellanic Cloud being the origin as the Large Magellanic Cloud (also known as Path Kethona in universe) was cleansed after the firing of Omega Halo at the Battle of the Greater Ark.
Yeah definitely
Here 3 years later and it’s sounding like that unauthorized access was The Endless. What happened to them, their ship or what their goal was since Zeta Halo is where they were contained remains a mystery. Love your videos dude, when it comes to Halo, you’re my go to for information I can’t find answers to! Keep it up!
Dude I thought the exact same thing
I can disprove this not trying to be mean though. The banished had released the Endless Via the weird thing containing the Harbinger and they were imprisoned on Zeta Halo years before the suicide of the forerunners and they were imprisoned there by the forerunners themselves so yeah they did not intend to release the flood at all, in fact, they are worse than the flood quoting this line from Cortana “you and I know there are thing worse than the Flood on this ring!”
@@Higher-Ground actually, the Legendary ending audio shows that The Endless showed up out of nowhere years after the Forerunners fired the rings
@@SgtAmerica1775 oh ok well uhm I have been disproved

I wonder if the "meddlers" could be the "endless" shown to us in Halo Infinite, since they supposedly aren't able to be destroyed by the halos.

I think so. I mean it's the most logical isn't it.

Hands down some of my favorite videos to watch. The “meddlers” sounds like flood sent by a grave mind from another galaxy. Which would explain their familiarity with the tech
2 years later but that’s honestly what I was thinking. The gravemind consumes intelligence as well as bio mass. So that potentially means the gravemind now has extragalactic information from whatever extragalactic species the flood potentially infected.
Or, another flood outbreak assisted in the release of this flood.
@@TVNDRA Then why didn't those flood consume all life on the ring?
@@TVNDRA that means it would be a key mind in that other galaxy, but the key mind would have brought alot more flood though so I don't think it was the flood.

Here's my theory.
2401 Penitant Tangent developed rampancy soon after the firing of the halo array. This was probably a result from him losing all of his creators in the blink of an eye. At first the symptoms weren't bad but they started to get worse. Eventually he noticed. However. As a result from it he started to neglect his primary duties and focus on curing himself. He let the out break go unchecked for quite sometime until it started to win against his sentinels. When this happened he finally realised his mistake and tried to correct it in a crazy method. He went into battle with his sentinels. However after a while he was damaged by the flood and his beam malfunctioned and he was captured by the gravemind.
What I would give to see a monitor charge into battle with a bunch of sentinels
@@hydradominatus3661 *_yeet_*

Forerunner AI do not go rampant as they where much more advanced than UNSC AI such as Cortana. We know this because of the fact that other monitors such as Guilty Spark or Exuberant Witness where absolutely fine after existing for billions of years without the forerunners. On top of this, Cortana uses forerunner technology to cure her rampancy in halo 5. It is much more likely that Penitent Tangent simply ignored the outbreak until it had escaped delta site, then built a flood wall to contain the outbreak and got captured in the process.
To me, I had always thought that the events prior to Halo 2 was that 2401 Penitent Tangent was fully caught up in the beginning stages of a Flood outbreak. Since most Forerunner Installations had contained the Flood for research purposes, it seems likely that an mechanical failure would eventually happen, somewhere down the line. And the Flood had spread at an alarming rate due to this accident; but was successfully contained to a Quarantine Zone, to prevent any further contamination of the Installation. Although by this point, the Flood had already gathered enough organic material to form a Gravemind. Which stopped the Monitor from doing any of its routines and keeping it prisoner, until a breach was made in quarantine.
Keep in mind that for this outbreak, with no matter how bad it may look, it was still kept pretty well until the events of Halo 2. So I like to think the Monitor wasn't lazy just naive about protocol procedures (maybe due to some form of rampancy?), which in turn almost resulted in a full-scale outbreak. Delta Halo did the best it could, until Human and Covenant forces broke into the Quarantine Zone, and I say that right there is pretty darn good containment! Also it kinda adds up to 2401 Penitent Tangent dialogue too; when the Master Chief is being held by the Gravemind.
TL;DR
Remember people 2401 Penitent Tangent may have dropped the ball, but at least he ain't no 343 Guilty Spark.
SirMaliceCallus Keep in mind, Tangent didn't have to deal with highly religious idiots opening EVERY single fucking door they come across on his Installation. Tangent meanwhile had a containment breach on his hands since about 200 years after firing the rings, seemingly ignored MULTIPLE requests for maintenance and security responses to said breach, and only had to deal with Covenant forces after several Millennia.
Honestly, given Penitent Tangent appeared to be completely unresponsive to the maintenance and security requests, I found myself assuming that he was somehow snatched by the Flood fairly early on in the outbreak. No response to lower ranking AI, garbled messages to Guilty Spark, and the first time we ourselves see him he's in the Gravemind's clutches...

Hey calls the Elites Meddlers as well. (In a nutshell, it was the Covenant who released the flood on delta Halo.)
Thats what i was thinking. As in the prophets themselves before the culmination of the covanent. Since they probably were outside the rings area of destruction. Also they had pretty advanced tech before acquiring forerunner tech.
@@lofiseeker1790 well they were actually in range of the halos' collective blast. all species were. And the forerunners isolated them after kicking their asses in a war. given their intelligence they re-learned much of their capability quickly and had a civil war over the forerunner artifacts that they found, primarily the keyship. in fact, the ship was used by the pro-use faction to escape. Due to low population they had to strictly control who could have kids and who couldn't via a lottery system to stave off inbreeding.
@@sinofren8406 Thats what i thought. As much as I'd love for a new species to be introduced, this theory may be looking too deep into an inconsistency with the lore.
I just came to this video while watching Halo lore, and after finishing Infinite, I'm convinced that the Meddlers are the Endless and I will die on this hill
The only issue with that theory is the harbinger said the forerunners captured them all shortly after the firing of the halo rings so it couldn’t have been them
Could be that the endless were the race that entered cold storage as they survived the firing of the rings. It would make sense.
Wait, so are the Meddlers (I’m liking that name for them, haha) supposedly also the species that crash landed on I04 in the CEA terminal? Or was that incident too far removed to say. Either way, I had no idea that this outbreak was seemingly caused by an outside force! Very interesting video Xperia! :D
they probably are
Yeah, but 'the Meddlers' likely aren't a single species. They could be, but the odds are in favour of it being various different extra-galactic species
@@HiddenXperia The Monitors seem to call any species other than Forerunners or Reclaimers "Meddlers". I do agree that this species is likely extragalactic. The only species with the capability to travel to one of the Halo rings so early would be the San Shyuum due to the Key Ship. But we know they didn't know about any of the rings until Halo CE. Definitely an extra galactic species. It would be awesome for this to be fleshed out.
Or maybe they're just lying. Maybe they (humans or covenant) DID find the Halo ring a while before we do in Halo CE, but they just didn't tell the others.
In fact my friend the ship that crash in the terminal is so similar to the the ships of the ancient humans that we can see in halo 4 terminals

Awesome video dude. Definitely like looking into these types of stories that aren't really explored much in-game, especially when it comes to the Flood.
Thanks man! More to come soon hopefully :D
I was confused about the gravemind in Halo 2, i mean i thought the gravemind was either created during Halo 2 or before it, but I thought graveminds needed sufficent biomass, and I don't think any living thing existed on the ring after 218 years... so I am confused for a bit.
The meddlers
iwu 1117
There is fauna in the halo rings.
There is another rece inthe galaxy we don't meet yet, in the book of "broken clicle" mention the elites found a inteligent race in a exploration mission before the prophets and this race make them retreat from the system
Well, why do you think there aren't any living things on the ring except those dino bird things that can remain safely in the air? Think about it...
@@BioGoji-zm5ph because, from my knowledge, the flood need sentient life forms to infest. The birds would not be classified as "sentient" in my opinion because they don't behave as sophisticated as regular life forms like forerunners and humans, and as such, the gravemind won't be able to form with the knowledge of those birds in their mind.
Wow I never really thought about it - this is fascinating! Glad to have great lore vids filling the gap between games - keep it up my dude
I absolutely love these vids. There's so much that's still unknown in the halo universe and that's why I love it.
So interesting man!! Keep up the great work!!
The meddlers, the precursors etc. I love how halo still have some mistery to it since halo 4 made the forerunners more grounded.
If this species were intergalactic in their traveling capabilities, it makes one wonder if they might have been close enough to the ark or some other forerunner construct, or perhaps even precursor or an extragalactic equivalent to the forerunners.
Could see it being a good setup for a new villain, if this species were close to the ark in halo 3. Especially if the firing of the replacement halo wiped out a few population centers. This all spurring them to seek out the perpetrators of such an (in their eyes) causeless atrocity and blatant attack on their kind. Could even be that they indiscriminately attack all species suspected of playing a role in the new I-04 firing. It would be the covenant all over again as far as humanity was concerned.
Or could have them encounter humanity during another expedition, establishing a sort of impromptu alliance with us...... ...until it was discovered that we caused the death of presumably billions of their people lol
Ah, good old Delta halo. I miss playing sentinel wall.
As for Tangent, he didn't seem that neglectful in Halo 2. I thing something was preventing him from stopping the outbreak.
Is it possible the flood captured him and the reason he didn't respond to the other AI is he couldn't?
Maybe those meddlers were the ones that crashed on alpha halo in the terminals before anyone got there
i love all your videos, specially the flood ones
...soo all of his videos?
Looking back after learning about the endless being able to survive a halo firing. Maybe the meddlers are some of the endless that weren't put into the slabs. Maybe they were looking for the rest of there kind and stumbled across this ring?
love this kinda video!! getting deep into the lore like this makes the games soo much more intresting to play again with this in mind
I’m studying these videos so I can learn how to survive when the flood invade earth. I’m already working on my own DIY Sentinel beam and Spartan suit !
Edit : also here before Justin Y !
Edit 2 : notice me lore master / senpai
xMerciless getting here before Justin Y is a large achievement
Master Chief ik
'also here before Justin Y' LOL
Just don't buy Elon Musk's 'flamethrower.' Get a real one. ;)
What happened to 2401 penitent tangent after halo 2???
Alan Rogers Odds are? He’s dead Jim. Likely destroyed along with the Gravemind.
Halo 2 had a lot of intriguing ideas, such as the massive Flood outbreak, but never really explained how it happened or what happened afterwards, which has always left me a bit confused. So I'm really glad that you've explained what was going on! It's interesting to learn more about the Halo lore, and it helps me enjoy the games better. Thanks a lot - these are my favourite types of your videos! Keep it up :)
Love the content man! Always cool to find out more about the Halo Universe! Keep up the good work.
This might sounds stupid but is the gravemind from halo 2 the same as the one in halo 3?
Freezer7596 yes
Yes it is the same one
They are different. They can meet up and have babies
Either it took a ride on High Charity, or that holy city had enough biomass to make another one while the Gravemind in Delta Halo was glassed. Either way, they share the same collective mind, so technically the same no matter which
ONI and The Flood Hidden's two favourite things
Imagine a flood cell that could infect someone and control them without altering their physical appearance at all. They wouldn’t mutate until they infiltrated their target area.
I have actually. Kind of like a cross between a zombie and a vampire. The flood purposely keeps most of the outward biomass original and maintained. Kind of like a zombie borg terminator
Since infection via spores is possible, that could very much happen.
Keep up the awesome work man, your videos have kept my love for Halo alive!
Iconic...
What if all flood would join together and make like a super massive octopus like thing or a human shaped form I think it’s a million dollar idea
Jewel krea graveminds evolve into planet sized superminds
@@FUBBA we need them to appear in-game.
Mayor of Big Daddy’s Pizza but imagine this not one flood was left behind that could be the size of an entire galaxy a galaxy made of no stars no planets just flood
@@relaxless9301 sounds like a key mind
you mean like the Reapers tried to do a few centuries earlier? [on the humanoid form thing]
This is the kind video I subscribed for, keep em coming!
Sounds like the delta Halo installations monitor had crippling depression so bad that he couldn't be bothered to contain the outbreak.
Imagine if that unknown species hacked into installation 04 alpha halo systems. Spark would have gotten insane if that happened, knowing him.
WatchedSteak19 Spark REALLY hates it when people mess with his shit... Even if you're making something for him to IMMEDIATELY USE he gets mad.
Does that mean the flood have been fighting sentinels of years on the ring?
BL λMO for a long time
BL λMO
NK, the gravemind had been sitting there fighting off the entire Ring’s defense and offensive capabilities until a ship crash landed, and it was full of food.
Then the flood showed up and the gravemind got lazy and had others do his bidding instead.
Silent_Stalker the gravemind was like "meh, ive been fighting them you years now you guys do it while i go lay on the couch for a while"
You remember the name of the level being "The 100,000 year war" right?
I love these types of videos (and all of your videos)! Please keep doing these investigative videos! This “Meddlers” theory was always something I had thought about once I learned about the backstory of the firing of the rings, the forerunners, etc. I need this type of stuff to get me through the content drought! Lol. Keep up the good work mate
Thanks man, I'm glad you enjoyed it! Another one is going up today about the Meddlers :D
Thank you for still doing Halo! You have just earned a subscriber! : )
5:18 The Endless. I wonder if the Endless, once the firing of the array happened, went on a galactic search for what happened, and sought out a precursor or the Primordial. They went to Delta Halo to find the Primordial, which the Gravemind is??
So the meddlers have been retroactively added as The Endless in Infinite maybe?
“Ah what a beautiful day! Nothing can go wrong on this great if a day.” (Flood breaks containment
Everybody gangsta till the popcorn starts walking
Makes you wonder how a species that made such use of Ai didnt consider the fact that they might get lonely and go mad in isolations.
Do you think The Medlers could be The Endless?
your vids are amazing dude. Played halo 2 at 5 years old and you've brought me back to Halo and got me invested in its lore haha.
I've not played Halo for ages but your lore videos still keep me connected with one of my favorite franchises. Stay iconic, eh mate ;)
I always wondered who those aliens in the ce terminals were.
Since Halo infinite, could this have been the endless doing?
I keep coming to this channel no matter what important working I do ,I just can't resist the Quality content of this channel
Wow! That was one special Sunday night vid!
Thanks, Xperia.
I would like to know more about the meddlers.
I think they may have seen the Halo Array firing and sent ships to investigate what happened and why. Makes sense to me, considering that they've been appearing around Halo rings and accessing forbidden areas. Their ship design looks kinda familiar as well. Do you think they influenced the Covenant at some point?
What if the Endless were the ones who were the unauthorized parties who hacked the teleporters?
Loving the Videos! You are doing an amazing job.
This is top notch content on a subject in the Halo universe that's always fascinated me.
Brah, that makes no sense tho. Y would 2401 want a reclaimer to activate the ring then, if he was influenced by the gravemind during the events of H2?
The lore master is back 🔥
Edit : also here before Justin Y
Love this stuff man. Keep it up!
Now that Halo Infinite has been released I'd say that it's quite possible that "The Meddlers" were in fact, The Xalanyn, AKA, The endless.
