One addition, cover or wrap your exhaust with something, the fluid will coat the exhaust pipe if you pull the drain plug out fast

Hi... Thank you for this video. You mention that now is good for 100k miles. I have different data but I'd like to compare in case that my inspection intervals have changed. My book says every 3rd engine oil change to replace the SMG gearbox and differential fluid too.

have you done thesmg or transmission fluid change? If not that would help so much

Thanks for a great video. Well lit. Clearly spoken with lots of useful info.
When my e61 m5 (2007) got to 102,000 in November last year, the output seals started weeping. A garage changed them and the input seal listing 1L of oil 83 22 365 988. 1,500 miles later the diff started graunching and inspection found front seal had started leaking badly. The front seal was replaced under warranty. They replaced the oil with 1L 83 22 365 988, which I now understand to be SAF-XJ - the standard stuff. Rather than 83 22 2 228 258, which I believe is the FM type with friction modifiers. It was quiet away from the shop, but 60 miles later and it is graunching from cold on tight right hand corners again. Perhaps they didn't do 20 right and 20 left. Perhaps they did and it needs FM oil.
I would have thought they should have used new plugs 33 11 7 525 064 x2 and the FM oil when it went back with complaint about graunching, but WTF would I know, I merely own it!
My choices now are; to shout at them, to add some Redline Limited Slip Differential Friction Modifier with car/diff at jaunty angle or to replace oil with 83 22 2 228 258 and new plugs myself. I'll see how it goes. Hope this helps someone.

Good video. Are you going to do any videos on the F10 M5? I have a 2013. The dealer recommended a diff fluid flush but the car only has 20k miles.

    • @E39Source
      @E39Source  Před 5 lety

That seems very early- unless you didn't do the 1,200 mile inspection which includes a diff fluid flush. I would recommend it if it has not been done since production.
We'll do F10 content as it needs it, but this is a 2016 with 8,000 miles so hopefully it's happy for a while.

I changed my diff oil in my 2001 E39 recently. I reckon it was original. It was nasty. Black. I went with Liqui Moly for the refill.

@@audieo575 We had no issues until the car was down for a few months for other repairs. After this, the differential made noise when turning hard at low speeds. We changed it with a fluid that BMW engineered to quiet down these noises and it's perfect now.

    • @E39Source

Removal of the drainage plug allows the fluid to drain out through gravity...

Slightly misleading title; the fluid was changed, not flushed. Flushed implies some sort of cleaner.

Muffler delete no thanks you will only attract cops and spoil the engine tune. Sorry I really think these cars should be kept standard. If it can be improved BMW would have done it.

Lol. BMW makes cars to a price point, and therefore has to compromise.

@@computiNATEor I think you would be hard pressed to find a modification for a M5 that actually makes it better from an all round perprspetive. All depends what you are going to do with it and personal preferences. If it was my car I would go for the mods to make the engine last longer like slightly larger clearances on the rod bearings.
It's not like an old fashioned American v8 where every component was built down to a price and could easily be improved on.

@@andrewthompsonuk1 Auxiliary input. Better from an all round perspective. Bluetooth calling, better. Newer tires, better. And it was definitely built to a price point, just look at the single piston brakes and steering box.

I agree with y'all up to a point. Being generous to BMW I'd say they have to meet the regulatory hurdles of different jurisdictions and not lose money as a company. Being picky I'd like a bit more go to at least leave an RS6 behind. (Having driven several imho RS6 is a cart, but with more horses and giddy up.)
Brakes: I have tracked mine but not hard as when pushed at 90,000 it came all over fairy lights and wanted TAVs and ICVs, poor thing. But it has enough brakes for pressing on a bit.
Tyres: M PS2 were a league of their own but 15 years on the PS4 s are better for grip, wear, fuel and possibly internal noise. Conti WC 790 developed into the 850 and Mich PA4 is poss better suited.
In a tunnel the S85 is nowhere near as loud as a Maserati F136, but a neighbour with a Ghibli Ps off everyone when he starts up in the small hours - so unnecessary, it's only a v6.
e60/61 M5s built to a budget, yes, one I can afford second hand. Thing is BMW are not making another one anytime soon. M3 touring, yes, but a new M5 for 2021, NO! Not even a 550i Touring merely a 540i. Why they keep conceding sales to AUDI I'll never fathom.
My list: 100L fuel tank, fuel warning at 1/8 tank not 1/4, ability to switch off the bongs. A creep function in D, mirrors to fold up when locking, sunroof to close at 75mph. The biggest one; dealers that don't waste my time or rip me off.
