Cheers George - another quality vid. Did mine a couple of months back but my oil that came out was like new. I replaced it anyway as I bought the car from a 3rd party dealer and looking around the cat they had done some shoddy work b4 me. So I replaced that, the gearbox oil and the PAS fluid at the same time. Like you say, for the cost of it, it's a do it once job and forget unless you're replacing something else. As NBacon says - it's a no-brainer.
Finding out the correct oils on the other hand can be very tricky.
    Thanks as always
    Andy
PS - thank your lucky stars you don't have the E61 - I've had all sorts of issues with the rear wiring through the boot and it is amazing how a - poor the original BMW setup is and b - what a chore it is to replace the damaged cables of which there have been many.

I changed the rear diff fluid to OMEGA 690 75W/90 for my BMW E61 520 D 2009, rwd. I think it is the best one you can buy, maybe there could be some similar from LE (Lubrican Engineers), but those are not possible to buy in any store I know.

Good video, however if you took the trouble to find out the diff gear oil spec then why not find out the amount needed before starting. I would never have drained it without knowing I had enough new fluid. A cheap hand pump is a must on all gearbox fluid changes. Just done a f10 535d auto box refill. Thanks for the video

When you only jack up the rear end, you can fill the diff up with oil and when you lower it down, the excess of oil will drain out of the diff. An oil catch pan on the ground is handy then.

Thanx again george, i was just looking at my diff on my new purchase, 2006 X5, e53. I see i will need to buy a 14mm allen key, and poss a better pump than the one i have.
Just wondering but is there such a problem if u only have the back jacked up a little and then fill it. I was thinking if i remove 900mls, then i will just put 900 back in !!

    • @GeorgeAusters

@@GeorgeAusters bought the 14mm allen key today, €6, then cracked both inlet and drain bolt, no issues.
As mine is a X5, i didnt need to jack it up, so just drained and filled, with Castrol 75w 90.
Think i drained about 1lit, and think i pumped in over 1lit but it started to spill out, so not sure !!
Will take a look at the front diff tommorrow !
