  • ►Replacing the BMW F30 rear differential fluid, or the differential fluid in any car for that matter is an often overlooked regular maintenance task.
    One of the most important parts of differential fluid replacement is the fluid itself. Choosing the correct gear oil will ensure a long, trouble-free life for your BMW's differential. In the case of the BMW F30 328i, we recommend Genuine BMW 75W-80 Hypoid Axle Oil.
    In this video, Gareth Foley, FCP Euro's BMW Catalog Manager, covers how to replace your old differential fluid with new fluid using minimal tools. This is a job anyone can complete in their garage or driveway.

    Just FYI for those that want to be as close to what BMW calls for as possible: the harmonic dampener E12 bolt has a torque spec of 19 Nm. The fill plug, as stated, at 60 Nm. I just reused old plug since I did not order replacement plug timely. I do these every 30K miles, so I plan to replace the plug at the next change. So far, no leaks, so reusing is certainly an option. Took about 850mL, I would say, so just order 2 bottles.

    Thank you. Just did this yesterday. Easy as pie - almost as easy as an engine oil change. I used a $7 fluid pump from Harbor Freight and it worked great. The tubing comes coiled so has a natural curve that went right to the bottom of the diff housing. I used Red Line 75W-85 GL5 oil and it took about 24 fl oz of that (less than 1qt bottle). I did not replace the plug but cleaned the area well afterwards with brake parts cleaner and will check for leaks later. My 328i has about 70K miles on it and this is the first gear oil change. The oil seemed to be in good condition but was a little cloudy and discolored. I'm glad I changed it. A general point is that FCP are performing this service exactly as I would want them to do it for my car. However, because us DIYers have an ongoing 1:1 relationship with our cars we can afford some leeway in which consumables/tools to use and which parts to replace/reuse.

    Great how-to video as always from FCP Euro. Quick question, why would you not just drop the cover and clean out the entire differential? That’s how I’ve always done gear oil changes in the past when there wasn’t a drain plug. It doesn’t look like it’s that hard to access all the bolts for the dif cover on these or a E90/E92. I haven’t gotten under the car yet to inspect but just curious how difficult if would be.

    I have a 2014 435i xDrive, and have had a whirring/grinding noise that’s surely coming from the rear diff after putting it on the lift. Techs suspected that someone put transfer case fluid in their mere and fucked it up (the shit was almost black and smelled burnt). Planning on doing this, hopefully it stops the noise, but it could also be metal shavings from the deteriorating gears as the previous unknown fluid was nowhere near as thick as what’s supposed to be in there.

    Hi! Thanks for the valuable info!
    Can i use a GL-5 oil, instead of a GL-4? (both 75w85). I've been searching and found sources claiming that you shouldn't use GL-5 on manual gearboxes since the additives for EP (extreme pressure) may damage copper and copper (syncromesh rings). But when you are using them on a differencial, the GL-5 is actually welcome, due it's EP additives

    • @manuelmarroquin9603
      @manuelmarroquin9603 Před rokem

      @randy's Retired DEF fluid is all made the same for diesels (they are meant for emissions). It burns off as you drive the vehicle so nothing needs to be flushed out. You just pour more in when it says it's running out. It is the blue cap next to where you top off the fuel tank when getting gas. Just be careful not to spill when pouring in. You can pick up DEF fluid from Autozone or O'Reilys (the mixture is all the same regardless of brand).

    • @ShockwavesFTW
      @ShockwavesFTW Před 2 lety +1

      I'm not FCP Euro but I don't think it's worth the risk. Just as people don't recommend changing transmission fluid at really high mileages if you've never changed it before (180K miles is definitely really high mileage), dif fluid is in the same category. You can potentially do more harm than good by swapping out the fluid.
      Or if you *really* want to, maybe only change half at once and see how the car responds?

    ATTENTION F31 WAGON OWNERS, you'll also need a T50, T60, and 13mm socket with 6" extension to remove the subframe reinforcements as one blocks the harmonic dampener. You don't need to completely remove the one blocking the dampener, which would require removing some plastic splash shield with push pins as well. The other one you will but the bolts are very easy to get to and it drops right out. I couldn't find torque specs for any of them.
