  • Why it's better to just be real.
    QUESTION FOR THE COMMENTS:
For the courageous: Do you ever struggle with hypocrisy?
For the VERY courageous: In what way?
    HERE'S HOW:
Today, prayerfully sit with this question:
    What internal flaws do
you try to hide from others?
Once you've identified one or two, look for a way to NOT hide that flaw today, or better yet commit to telling a trusted friend about it.

      1. Trying to figure out how to ask how to help and fulfill the need without being found out. 2. Not reminding my husband what I did for him decades ago.

I am sure I struggle with it in a variety of ways.. One big way is that i tend to work hard to prove to others that I am unacceptable so they reject me and walk away now rather than when I have gotten to like them.

God reminds me (with my permission) of something new every day it seems. I was Blessed with a mother whose left hand didn’t know what it was doing. (she was left handed trained to write right handed because of teasing in school) She automatically just did good things for others and as a kid I thought they were taking advantage. When I would ask, she would just say in her unassuming way that “It is something I can do.” She was a cosmetology graduate in 1930s. Married in 1940. I was born in 1942. A different world. Farm life in middle USA. Both parents were faithful so I had examples every day of early chores, breakfast together with devotions that followed. The prayer time was mostly Dad, but alternated. Prayer aways ended with The Lord’s Prayer. Even as a young person I struggled with the part of the Lord’s Prayer that was “…forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us….”. That’s one I’m improving on especially in traffic. I look back at what were my reactions and realize thankfully that my reactions are often now prayer for that driver to be safe and God to grant peace in some way. It’s actually a sort of fun thing to do! A work in progress. As an old person there is not much I can hide! ;-)

Of course I do struggle with hypocrisy! I want the dopamine hit I get from others knowing that I did a good deed. In renewing my mind I’d love to personally feel better that I’ve done something and others didn’t know.

A number of years ago, I had the issue of doing things so others can see - not necessary intentionally but was conscious of it. So I was timid to do anything whatsoever as the first thing I hear is from the enemy: ah, you are just doing it to impress others. I came to decision to ignore all that. If there are things that can help others, just do it. We are creature of habits, the more I do, the less the thought of impressing others come to mind. Instead of going through the whole gyration of fighting against the evil one, a good deed has been accomplished because God has put the opportunity in front of me, all the glory goes to Him.

Recently, my husband & I were at our new church for our first fellowship meal. I decided to introduce myself to a group of women. They were warm & accepting. However, since it had been so long, that I was included, my mouth took off. Before long, these women knew far more about me than they probably wanted. I'm loud too😂
Anyway, the Lord allowed me to choke on some food. So much so, that a man in the room did the heimleich maneuver on me. I'm very thankful!😊 But not for what you think... When God humbles you, it sticks!!🕊🙏🏻💙

John, I so like when you say, “No, no, no”. Especially when you wag your finger, too. Not a very spiritual addition to the comments but there you have it. 😊
This was a wonderful, needed and thought-provoking topic. ❤

Being hypocritical is much more involved than saying one thing and doing another. Being hypocritical comes when there is deception in the heart, and how we can eliminate deception of others AND self-deception is essential to living the Golden Rule. Does an open heart have to be an unguarded one? Not if it is guarded with love. Doing to others as we would have them do to us comes from loving hearts... even when that love flows in one direction. Love keeps the heart strong, and it keeps the hypocrite's mask on the shelf.

Oh my goodness, another wake up call 🥱 I had never thought of what I ‘do’ to cause others to like me as hypocrisy. Wow…….but you are right, it is. Though I must say that over the last 2 years I have been attempting to ‘do’ and ‘give’ without anyone knowing it was me and I must confess it leaves me more content. I now need to learn to ‘be myself’ with others, rather than pretending I am ‘all together’.

Learning to see my hypocrisy: a couple of days ago , I was with some friends and one was being controlling. I noticed someone in the group had a look of smiling , mocking. When I saw that , I congratulated myself on how very nice I was being and looking! But internally, I was also looking down on the “controller”. I didn’t recognize the difference between the internal me and the pretend me until I heard this message.

First, it’s John’s willingness to become vulnerable and open about who he is that helps me grow spiritually and truly understand what his message means. Second, hypocrisy is part of me EVEN when I’m alone with God until I wake up and ask Him to shine His Light on me so that I can see how I try to impress Him. Most nights as I pray the Examen, I ask God to send His Holy Spirit and let me see myself as He sees me. Even now I’m feeling awkward sharing this prayer. 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Good Morning ☀️! Oh great word to wake up to! Thing is Ps John, even if all that is the truth about your intentions, because of it, your wisdom of the roots that I need to dig deep and face makes doable for me. I know I am not alone because of Jesus, but also, someone else here on earth understands my struggles too.
Thank you, no mask do like Jesus, from the heart ❤️ 🙏

I would have completely lost it if you would have introduced this video with the "Here's Johnny..." bit. But I completely and quite inappropriately digress. ;)
This series is so excellent and hits deep at the core and is so very much needed in the world today, as I believe John has also mentioned in an earlier video. Not to diminish any other portion of the Bible at all - but if we could all simply start with the sermon on the mount, wow. What a difference we could see.

Not sure if this really applies to today's message. Yes. Sometimes, I make judgments in my head when acts of kindness, especially towards my husband, are met with anger or frustration. I don't do the acts for recognition, but the responses I sometimes receive are harsh, and those snap judgments happen. It's something I struggle with.
