I did take lessons as a young girl though I never got to the point where it was that effortless. It takes practice. 😉 But I’d like to give it another try! Such beautiful imagery. Thank you John and team. ❤

I did not, but my kidd did. Interestingly, my son is left handed and seemed to be able to separate the hands (like John is talking about) much earlier and easier in his lessons than my right handed daughter.

Yes, I took piano lessons over several years. The lesson I learned from that is I have to be faithful with practice - something I was NOT. Sad now. I can play ONLY GOOD ENOUGH to get out the old hymnals - and if NO ONE else is around to hear. (still a comfort for me with the words) My life lesson is that I MUST be FAITHFUL in my walking and talking with Jesus. I will not neglect and now it is the most natural thing. Sometimes I wonder if God thinks, “Now what is that old lady up to?” …of course HE already knows! ;-)

Took lessons in high school and college. I am not too coordinated so the independence between hands (not to mention feet) was a real challenge. I love the comment below about the necessity of being faithful in musical practice equating to being faithful to God.

I took piano lessons. I was quite hopeless at it. Another great episode. Have a great weekend Tim and Father John. Can you please pray. I just lost my dad to dementia over a month ago. Grief comes and go. Mum and I are struggling as are my siblings. Comforted to know Dad is not suffering anymore. I miss him. Have a great weekend, Father Jon and Tim.

Another great message John. Thank you for being so generous with us and sharing the gospel in such a profound way. This small community has been such a blessing. It's the only place that feels safe in my life at the moment, and it helps to encourage me and give me hope every day.

I took piano lessons many years ago . But my left hand doesn’t even know what the left hand is supposed to do. Haha. I can only remember the right hand . 😊. I appreciate these messages so much.

Wow, we often don't think about how "quid pro quo" sneaks into our lives; it's not just a term we hear on the news. If we try to live Golden Rules days with our generosity, we will sometimes hear "thanks" for acts done spontaneously to help others. If we don't hear it, that's OK. Keep doing generous acts. They come from love. Just like the generosity in things God gives us. Give thanks to God not for the thing, but for his love.

Loved & was so refreshed by this lesson. I could relate to the part on piano having taken lessons a very long time ago. Piano never was effortless. Currently find similar freedom in singing, dance and drawing. May the freedom found there translate in secretive generosity.

  • @lindabryant5279

I love the analogy of practicing scales about the left and right hand not knowing what the other does. I'm a pianist and especially love playing music by Bach. His repetition of themes between the right and left hands also causes one to 'take the back seat' so to speak. I think that applies in this topic of secrecy. Thanks John!

I love the thoughts expressed in this talk! I am a musician, but I’ve never played piano. I do recall, though, how overly conscious my feet seemed to be, when I was learning to drive, which is actually a very similar concept, so I can relate, in that way.
Thanks for sharing this gift of thought and words that God has given you. 🙏❤️

What a great illustration about the left hand not knowing what the right hand is doing. Thanks for that! My only problem when playing the piano is, sometimes the left hand just completely forgets what to do altogether. 🤪

  • @georgemckamey1688

Not piano - but accordion - when the left hand and right hand operate independently - the left hand does not know what the right hand does - then the music comes. Love it!

Your joy is contagious John !! So grateful to wake up to the gift of your teaching. I took piano lessons for 3 years in grade school but was too young to be inspired by Beethoven and Bach and never wanted to practice those pieces !! Wish I still had a piano though. I would really enjoy making music now ❤️

I regularly play the piano to lead worship and vividly recall the struggle of getting each hand to play independently as John describes. It took years! Along with consistent practice, I found that keeping my visual focus on the sheet music helped me avoid getting “stuck in the weeds” of watching each hand do its thing. The obvious spiritual analogy is that keeping our focus on the Lord (“seek first His kingdom”) and the bigger picture of how He is at work, we are freed from the burden of focusing on our part in it.
I laughed, though, at the notion that we could potentially become proud of ourselves for reaching that point of playing two hands independently. My daughter is a drummer; so my two hands are NOTHING compared to her four limbs on a drum kit!

I had lesson for about 8 years but always struggled with the coordination required. I now play for fun, simple tunes that I play quite badly, and I never do scales!

I teach piano. So I understand about the coordination necessary to play scales. I don’t think so much of the left hand forgetting the right hand it the opposite but I see how it makes some sense in your illustration.
