- Super Mario Odyssey is full of the best levels ever designed. Everything from steam gardens, new donk city, fossil falls, and more are all incredibly iconic kingdoms. Mario Odyssey does however have four kingdoms that don't quite live up to the others, cloud kingdom, ruined kingdom, dark side, and darker side. Since these are all smaller than Mario Odyssey's other kingdoms I have decided to call them the mini kingdoms. In today's video we are going to analyze all four of mario odyssey's mini kingdoms. We'll be looking at their aesthetic, design, story, captures, and moons to determine which is Super Mario Odyssey's worst kingdom?

The ruined kingdom is easily one of the most missed potential things in any Mario game. I love the idea but I wish the kingdom was just a little bit bigger so there was more to explore with the creepy aesthetic
I remember someone saying that the Ruined Kingdom would have been a great place to introduce boos and bring back Boo Mario in a way, which would have made for some cool puzzles. It also would have been neat to see some lightning puzzles that require you to move metal objects (or metal enemies) to conduct the electricity and power stuff, or if there was a climbing segment on a crumbling tower, not necessarily as a timed mission, but just the idea of climbing around ruins, especially with Odyssey's superb movement options, would be so cool.

Dark Side actually has a bit of story. If you don't skip the Broodals' dialogues, we find that one wants to steal the Odyssey, and another wants to take revenge on Mario for them not getting any work after Bowser's failed wedding.

Imagine how good the Cloud Kingdom could have been. Make the aesthetic somewhat like Sky Garden from Mario Kart Super Circuit, and the captures things like spiny-throwing Lakitus and Ty-Foos. The NPCs could be a cloud people of the sky, and it could be an exploration based kingdom. That would be AMAZING, right?!?
Mario RPG kind of did this idea actually, though obviously it's been so long since that game came out that it would be a good time to revisit it in a different way

The Honeylune Ridge theme is such a weird theme for me. It’s not a bad song by any means however, depending on the kingdom the song can have different meanings. When it’s in the Moon Kingdom it has that build up especially with the church bells but after you beat Bowser it just feels really calming. Darker Side also makes the song feel really relaxing after you beat the gauntlet. However, I personally think it sounds really ominous in Dark Side. It’s the mix between the muted colours, the bottomless pits and the music which is why I personally find Dark Side quite creepy. Anyone else feel the same way?

Probably the incredibly impractical handle design. Which is also probably what led to their wielders' demise.
Odyssey has become one of those youtubers who I watch everything from just because I enjoy their content. I haven't watched this one yet but I'm sure it will be a good one.
Edit: That was a really great video. I liked all of the smash references, and the Minecraft Minigames Music hit me with some real nostalgia. I still don't know why they didn't keep those around.

About the dragon in the ruined kingdom I always felt it was kinda funny having such a realistic dragon

i think none of their aesthetics are typical mario. thats why i like cloud kingdom. its giving me a dream feel with the pastel rainbow ish colours and the grey white. i like the other small kingdoms aesthetics more but i dont think we should be dissing it so quickly. cloud kingdom just make me feel lonely and dull and i think thats exactly what they wanted.
its obviously boring and if they added rainbows and pastel coloured pipes it would probably be my favourite kingdom aesthetic.
I didn’t realize how amazingly designed Darker Side was until you described it. It truly does tie together the entire game; and it’s a perfect representation of the journey the player had.
For me, it feels like this:
Dark Side and Darker Side are there for a boss rush and challenge, respectively.
Everyone wants to see Ruined Kingdom again, while no one wants to see Cloud Kingdom again.

4. Dark Side
I have like....0 memories of Dark Side. I've completed it twice, and both times were many months ago. The one thing I do remember about it is the hint art. I'm not the biggest fan of the hint art, but OH MY GOD I LOVE THAT LUNCHEON SPOT THE DIFFERENCE ONE! It's a perfect mix of difficulty and fun and only took me 5 minutes to figure out. I also just really like spot the difference.
3. Darker Side
I just completed Darker Side for the second time a week or so ago, and it was fun! I also may or have may not used Glydon skip because I hate that area with the spiky guys and Pokyo, but uhhhhh great kingdom! Very fun.
2. Cloud Kingdom
I like the aesthetic of Cloud alot. I've always loved the thought of just being so high up in the sky that you can't see the ground. Very pretty kingdom, 9/10.
1. Ruined Kingdom
Scream at me all you want for putting Darker Side at number 3 and Ruined at number 1, but I love this kingdom! it's my favourite kingdom in Mario Odyssey, actually.........mostly because of the dragon but who doesn't love dragons? Not me, I love dragons, and you'd know that if you seen my profile picture because it's a Wings of Fire OC. (not anymore lol, thank you to that person who replied so i can update this comment) Not only does it have a dragon, but I love the aesthetic alot, and I always like to come back to it. Hey, I even collected every moon in Ruined like last week. Amazing kingdom, very pretty, has a dragon, 11/10.

I love how darker side only has the story moon, given it’s the final place you go and it’s also the end. But that ending. The music box just makes it emotional.
Dark Side mixes the Moon and Luncheon Kingdoms and I love it.

I had a dream once about Cloud Kingdom. Basically, it had the aesthetic of Cloudtop Cruise from MK8, being set on not only clouds but on rainbows and on giant vines growing out of massive Brick Blocks and ? Blocks. I’d say it was a combination of Cloudtop Cruise, Gusty Garden Galaxy, Rainbow Road, Rainbow Ride and the cloud kingdom we got. There would also be the occasional airship alongside the gargantuan beanstalk and wispy clouds, some of which would have been overgrown by the vines. It would make use of all of the other kingdom’s captures in creative ways. For example, there would be a giant ? Block that Mario can’t hit, and you would need to capture a Banzai Bill and hit the Block with it to make the vine sprout out of the top. Another part had you capturing a Gushen to water a seed and make it grow. At the top there would be the area seen in the concept art, a vast expanse of islands atop a sea of clouds, mountains and waterfalls all supported by the clouds. Ahead would be the castle seen in the artwork, which would be inhabited by Lakitus. Some common captures would be Ty-foos, Bullet Bills, Wigglers, Octoombas, Stingbys, normal and fishing Lakitus, and Bloopers with the main capture being Flopters, which were enemies from 3D world. You could use it to jump high into the air and glide down slowly, similarly to the spin platforms in NSMBDS or the tornados in the Galaxy games. You would also do the drill spin like in NSMBDS when you ground pounded while spinning. Some other enemies included Fuzzies, the Angry Sun, Choppahs, and Thwomps.

Ruined kingdom is my very least favourite kingdom in the game. The reason is simple: *it begs more questions than it answers.*
While cloud is empty, it is presented and intended to be empty. It's meant to be this way, with no more of a story than a "This is an empty arena in a random place with no lore or background." Ruined kingdom, on the other hand, has this dramatic camera angle in the opening, yelling "Check me out, I have an edgy atmosphere and a deep backstory unlike anything else in the game". And then it slaps you in the face when you realise there is 1 platform, leading to another one. They had our expectations set so high and then give us nothing in return, like they could have unlocked just 1-2 other towers to explore after the fight and it would have had way more to offer. But instead we're left with a wasteland which takes like 20 seconds to explore.

The part where you were talking about the long climb up the grayscale version of New Donk City Hall reminded me of one of my favorite games of all time, Phantasy Star Online. In that game, the final section of the final level of Episode I ends with a massive room full of many enemies that you must defeat to get to the boss room (except in later versions, where this is bugged so only one wave spawns most of the time, resulting in a very anticlimactic final room). There is then a very long hallway that you have to walk down to get to the boss teleporter, building the player's anticipation and giving them a chance to think about their massive achievement of completing such a long and tedious level in one go. Then the final boss itself has three phases (two in the Normal difficulty), and is very challenging, making the anticipation well worth it.
Phantasy Star Online may be a rather dated game in terms of the MMO genre, but it has many principles of good level design that you highlight in this series. It's one of SEGA's best and most underrated titles in my opinion, and a free-to-play rerelease of it can still be played using dedicated fan servers.

I really like the pink to yellow sky gradient in cloud, and even the plain white ground I think could be cool, but I think the layout hurts it. Just one circular platform is so lame, if it was like a big castle or something as a medium kingdom I think it could be pretty cool

The dragon boss fight at ruined kingdom was EPIC
I feel like both ruined and cloud should have at first seemed to be mini kingdoms but when you came back to them after the story mode there would be more areas in both kingdoms and it would be revealed that they were kind of like a yin-yang situation

It makes since why the Cloud Kingdom is a mini kingdom because even though it's had it's own actual Worlds before like in New Super Mario Bros, most of it's iterations before were just sub areas within levels.

Most people don’t like bowser’s kingdom because it’s too linear, but it makes the buildup so much more intense. Plus, it has a unique aesthetic that was barely seen before
ok so idk if this is a well known fact but i just realized while looking at the cloud kingdom in this video that the little circle areas that bowser stands on have shadows that represent the phases of the moon and its such a neat detail

GOD THAT THING HAD POTENTIAL.
Imagine Mario walking through a ruined kingdom, trying to get enough moons to escape the area.
Imagine the castle level from Sonic 06 (I AM NOT KIDDING HOLD IT) but INSIDE a large castle. In the end a knight, who looks defeated and kind of ghosty, awaiting for you.
In his second stage he calls the dragon and then the battle proceeds as normal.
Then when you defeat him King Boo (Old design, not Luigi's Mansion) exits the armor and then he rants about Mario defeating him and all.
You not only call back a character who barely shows up on the main series at the same time you do this massive boss fight.

I think that at cloud kingdom after jou beat darker side a new pipe will apear with a bowsers face on it and if you can defeat him you can walk around the cloud kingdom.
you can go to places what are blocks who only bowser can destroy and do new things.
Same for the dragon if you completeted dark side you can go with the dragon (he will give you a ride) to new ilands.

Yea ruined was such a missed oportunity, they could have made the kingdom a lot better if after breaking the moon rock, some plataforms appeared that led to a new area with the dark liquid on the bottom and a broken town with some moons here and there
I'm surprised almost two years later i still didn't find a comment talking about the fact that cloud kingdom doesn't have the Mario picture match. Like...yeah, it doesn't count for that kingdom because it's not there - it's in the mushroom kingdom
i remember first seeing ruined kingdom in promotional material when they first showed the dragon i was expecting this kingdom to be a ghost type of kingdom where its almost a big ghost house type level. even if it was going to be a small kingdom this would of made this area so much more interesting then a boss fight area
I really hope cloud and ruined return if we get an odyssey 2. Cloud had so so much scrapped content, and Ruined had tons of missed potential. Like, all those broken spires and stuff would’ve been so cool, as would those floating castles seen in the concept art.

personally i vastly prefer cloud kingdom to normal Mario sky levels, sure they're more colorful I guess but they feel pretty basic and cookie cutter visually: just clouds and a white sky and sometimes this generic mushroom hill things.
Cloud Kingdom on the other hand looks all dreamy and the sunset, the background cloud gate thing and the very visible moon make it look really pretty imo. It looks colorful but not a generic assets kind of way.

Ruined was genuinely the best, (and my favourite), mario level idea I've ever seen, so it was extremely disappointing when it was extremely small, same with cloud, but ruined is the best.
Plus I love dragons
I forgive dark and darker side, because we got three moon kingdoms as one huge moon kingdom.
