Shiveria: Super Mario Odyssey's Most Mediocre Kingdom | Level By Level

- Super Mario Odyssey is in my opinion the best game ever made which means that this has some of the best levels, called kingdoms here, ever made as a result. Wooded Kingdom, New Donk City, Sand kingdom, and so on are all incredible levels in terms of idea and design. The same however cannot be said about Shiveria, otherwise known as the Snow Kingdom. Of all the kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey this seems to be the most generic and mediocre one. The idea, captures, moons, and general level design here are all disappointing and today I go over why I think that is. Ranked against the other kingdoms in the game I find it to be one of the worst, even though it contains some fun moons and even the hardest moon in Mario odyssey. So join me in this first episode of a brand new level analysis series as we take a look at Shiveria: Mario Odyssey's Most Mediocre Kingdom.

If anyone comes up with a good name for this series let me know! I've already had a few suggested to me from my discord but I want to see if you all have any good ideas as well! Thanks for watching and hopefully I'll be able to make more because this was a lot of fun!
I’ve got a name, The Odyssey Analysis Series
Maybe Odyssey’s Level Ideology?
how about Mario odyssey analysis
"Super Mario Odyssey: Kingdom critique", maybe?
Should I replay Super Mario Odyssey?
Another annoying thing is that since the town technically counts as a sub area, it has no map and is just counted as a single point on the main map, so you can’t use the map to help find moons in the town.
OMG THANK YOU
I actually think thats a good thing haha

I know the Shiverean Cheep Cheeps are just lazy recolorings of the regular Cheep Cheeps, but it really fascinates me. The fact that we got a whole new species of fish in one kingdom just makes me believe there’s a special biology full of underwater enemies. I don’t know, it maybe their warm bodies talking as I’m dying from hypothermia.
True, but from a different point of view, its pretty lazy and unimaginative, they could have made it a blooper or something at least
Thry should of made it a species of fish that swims in icy areas with a Mario style spin

Everybody do the flop
No no, he’s got a point
Hey kwisowofer whats with the krad emote for a pfp huh?
Snow Kingdom would be a lot better if it:
A. Made 90% of the level be the inside. Having the outside be small to make you think “Oh it’s a generic ice level” then boom: A cozy winter town is great. It’s a nice contrast to the isolated feeling the outside gives. However the outside is designed just to do this, it really doesn’t need to have most of the kingdoms moons.
B. Gave the inside a more unique theme. Maybe there’s some frozen poison liquid, or there’s some fossils trapped in the ice, really endless possibilities.
C. Made the track be explorable and part of the town. Imagine exploring a town like in Sand Kingdom, then it turns out it’s a racetrack with all the citizens cheering you on as you race. It would also expand the inside and give it more moon opportunities. You could also have some moons change the track design, like a beanstalk lifting some parts up to give you shortcuts, melting some ice for the same effect, ect.
Edit: forgot about this
D. Make the sub areas connected, or just not make them the required missions. While they’re ok on their own, they aren’t good enough to be the focus of the kingdom
I agree with pretty much everything here, great ideas!
One thing I would add is to make the outside bigger, and maybe have the town be a part of the outer kingdom. Then have the frozen water just be ice and bring back the fun ice skating from Mario galaxy. Maybe you start on top of the cliffs, fight rango for a story moon, and then you have an open world styled boss fight, like mollusque lanceur, that makes use of the ice skating, which would give this kingdom a really unique feel, along with the fun racing mini games.
well you can kinda go on the track with a pretty easy glitch
maybe its just me but i kind like the idea of having a smaller kingdom but with a good few sub areas but that only works if the kingdom is an interesting area
Yeah, but not poison.
Lava works better
Why not make it sand kingdom but the opposite?
Mainly hot but with cold in it

Okay, while the Snow Kingdom is very mediocre for an Odyssey Kingdom, I still give it credit due to the presentation when you initially enter the Kingdom.
At first, its very mysterious due to all the snow and the ice water preventing you from exploring, so the only place you can go is to fall into the center of the snow... until you fall into a town of friendly and adorable bear people. It really caught me off guard, and more importantly, left a big impression on me
Honestly, I feel like the thought of isolation fits with an ice themed level

That one is pretty easy.
Whenever I get to that second fork on the globe, I like to choose the Snow Kingdom first just to get it over with. LOL
The music and civilians here are charming, but this kingdom feels too closed-in and like a small crater for my liking.
This is definitely my least favourite out of the "full" kingdoms.
Same here, also: Which one do you choose on the other fork (wooded or lake)?
@@alexholley2712 I usually choose Lake first, since I like Wooded more.

The Shiverians Are Super Cute
Shiveria does have one of the best out of bounds with that race track
The walls make the level feel more ICEolated. GOT'EM!
*laugh track*
I will say that I actually really like the blizzard time in the Snow Kingdom, it's so dark and mysterious, and the small landscape isn't as much of an issue because you have to feel your way around, I think this segment could be a little longer to make finding moons in the kingdom a little more rewarding, but I think a big improvement would be when the blizzard lifts to be presented with a huge snowy wasteland, mostly flat, ice regions to skate on, and big ice and snow sculptures sticking up out of the ground... then take the shiveria town and stick part of it above the ground. A unique mechanic for this world could have been pushing around the large snow sculptures that let you physically rearrange the world
I would 100 percent want to see a series with all the kingdoms really enjoyed this one
The aspects I disliked about Snow Kingdom were basically the same that made me not fully enjoy every kingdom in the game. While I love Super Mario Odyssey I think they should stay away from making either small or bland kingdoms. I think that all of the big kingdoms should have more enemies and hazards in order for them not to get boring and the smaller ones should not only also have more enemies but should also be bigger in size.

And I do agree with your opinions and I forgot to say something. Dry bones for smash
How to fix Snow Kingdom:
1. adding a boss fight in order to reach the first story moon
2. being able to explore the race area
Snow Kingdom does have the best inhabitants though. They are just so round and fluffy.
They're the worst ethnic group I will genocide them
I would’ve made the Snow Kingdom based off of Russia - with colorful, candy-like onion roof castles, and maybe have a secret Soviet-style concrete bunker that could also be a reference to the svalsbard seed vault.
“Hardest moon in the game”
Darker side multi moon, Volleyball and jump rope moons: *Doubt*

Kingdom👏review👏
You- you can’t compare a 2D Mario game to a 3D one, many 3D Mario games have unique styles, super Mario galaxy being the best example; but SM3DW also does some cool stuff
Personally I think that small icy isolated atmosphere is exactly what they wanted
It plays to the theme of the level
I think it wants you to feel isolated
With the damn near deadly cold water constantly placed around the level
The shivering airy surface
If it had a chilling ambience it would be perfect
I get that it runs against the theme of the rest of the game but imo it serves to make it more unique
I think the way to fix it would be to make the raised platforms a lot bigger with more to explore
And to make parts of the water much deeper with fun moons to try to race to
Otherwise if it did how you wanted I think it would end up feeling like "just like these levels" in comparison to the rest of Odyssey imo
So for me personally Cap Kingdom is the most mediocre
It literally just does its job
It doesnt break the mold
It's not too big
It's not got too much to explore
It's just "okay"
Omg. At first I was like: “Siv-what?”
I honestly didn’t remember this kingdom AT ALL.
It was just a blank in my mind.
0:50 ok so I’m not the only one who makes the selecting cascade kingdom mistake. Anyway, I figured that this kingdom could’ve been improved in multiple ways, but honestly there should’ve been more to shiveria town. Some overworld music in the normal area would be nice. Good video
I would love to see this channel continue
honestly my main problem is just how small the town is. It really is just one long hallway with a few tiny offshoots. it doesn't feel like a place real people could live and it loses that coziness for me. I wish it was a larger underground area (almost like the underground city from wet dry world, just, less creepy and abondoned)
also the outside should be on top of a snowy mountain or something. Having the walls souround you makes it feel incredibly boring and small
I like the walls but if they were wider and had a different shape it would b cool.
Or many things to do on the walls like climbing, skiing, or sliding around on them would be neat.
I think the most underrated kingdom is Lake Kingdom. No one really talks about it.
No one talks about it

Cloud and Snow Kingdom Are my favourite kingdoms because they’re so peaceful and quiet haha
I even saved Snow Kingdom’s ambiance in my playlist.
Plus I already like snow and coldness.
So it’s not difficult to impress me.
No joke, you should do a level analysis of 1-1 of super mario bros and talk about why its a MASTERPEICE in game design
You know what you consider the small kingdoms are either linear yet still fun kingdoms like the darker side or are meant to be for story purposes and for a boss fight like Ruined kingdom. At least a small kingdom while it lacks in size it makes up for in challenge the darker side is a perfect example of that. The only exploring that can be done in darker side is that one sphinx you have to go out of your way to find and even that the only reason you'll want to do so is to hear its dialogue which imo was worth it cause its kind of wholesome but in terms of exploration that's pretty much it. But the darker side is not supposed to be a exploration kingdom sure you could make the argument that this game is meant to be exploration and if they kept that level of difficulty but put it into a kingdom that you could explore it would be a perfect finish for the game but i feel like that's what the dark side is supposed to be. The hardest kingdom you can actually explore however in order to truly challenge the player one final time you have to sacrifice that freedom to explore and that's why we have the darker side.
In Odyssey 2 I wanna see Hyrule Kingdom. That would be cool
Holy shoot
Great video as always!
That would be an awesome series btw and I know you don’t care but for some reason I hate the luncheon kingdom
2:51 I love the transitions between worlds
Shiveria is my favorite, and I haven't watched the video yet but I already agree with all of your points.
Nice touch adding the Pokémon music for the section about captures
We can agree that it's the worst non-mini kingdom, but we can also agree that the Shiverians are the best npcs
Bowser’s Kingdom has 62, only 7 more than Snow which is insane. Also i love the music
I love how you flex on us by doing spin pounds and stuff.
Watching this 3 years after the fact, but you hit the nail on the head, the first part of the level needs some verticality. Like in Mario 64, both ice levels were based around tower like structures. I remember spending 20 minutes trying to jump on those clear ice pillars near the central platform thinking they'd do something interesting. Perhaps had they had a central ice tower above the town entrance that had some platforming elements to reach the top for moons, the area would have felt more cohesive rather than disjointed.
Nice 3DW music in the background 👌
thats funny cause for me personally this is one of my most fond and memorable ones haha, maybe its just the cute winter aesthetic and music that did it for me
*Talking about how Shiveria is Odyssey’s most mediocre kingdom
Me: Dang! You’re really good at this game! So many perfectly timed jumps!
A thing not mentioned about Wooded Kingdom is its Balloon World... It's probably my favourite because of the fact that people can't hide balloons very well there if they just brush on it and leave it be... unless you practice it a lot. Hide your balloons well, people!
The shiverian racer is used for 6 moons: the 2 secret moons, the multi-moon(3 moons), and the s class race in the town
imagine if Super Mario Odyssey had a thing like Yooka-Laylee did. Like they'd start with being maybe a medium sized kingdom, then with enough purple coins or moons you'd upgrade them into larger kingdoms. After that you could upgrade them one more time to unlock the smaller kingdoms. Take for instance the moon. You start off with not such a big of a bare wasteland that is the regular moon, upgrade that to the moon we have in Mario odyssey, then upgrade again to unlock the dark side, finally collect every moon in the game for the darker side. I don't know, I'm an idea person, who am I kidding it's not even my idea.
My idea for the water in the snow kingdom is to have it as cold water that is crusted in ice with some holes here and there. This is so you can travel across via running and jumping while there’s still liquid water under the ice that can be accessed by some holes in the ice. Oh and include cheep cheeps in those holes too.
SO TRUE, when i saw the title I made my own list and we say the same thing.
So then you were biased?
The entirety of snow mountain from Pac-Man World 2 is so better and way more narratively cohesive, we first the ranger warning is about the danger ahead, then we scale up the frozen river, nothing complex, then we transition into the avalanche alley, where we’re Crash/Indiana Jones style chased by a giant snowball and immediately makes the threat clear, and after narrowly escaping, we finally reach the summit, where we meet again with the ranger for the last time and hands us the ice skates (the best gameplay in the game) and we race down the mountain to a track that gives Gusty Garden a run for its money. Honestly even levels like Cool Cool Mountain and the ice levels in both Galaxies were way better and more creative.
Imo, I really like snow kingdom!
Well snow levels in Mario Game are usually a snowy mountains with snow covered conifers. Like a Christmas postcard. Snow Kingdom is based off Arctic or Anctartic. That makes it a bit unique.
Yay a new series =)
Didn't even know there was a bonzi bill. I think the isolated feel of the kingdom was intentional, but I do think the kingdom could have been better
One thing I would add is a fun unique ice boss, maybe the icicle golem from mario rabbids could be a great thing to add
the funnest thing to explore in snow kingdom was the racetrack using the out of bounds glitch which unfortunately got patched
Small thing that would improve this kingdom at least aesthetically would be if the town was also on the outside portion and also if the kingdom was slightly bigger; I think it would have made things more interesting and lively and could have made for some interesting missions
My personal problem with this kingdom is probably mostly that it's less of an open-worlded explorable kingdom, it's more like an obstacle course.
"You'll mostly be on the boring surface."
Me, who is grinding Bound Bowl Grand Prix:
*Hmm*
I think having the outside area be a little smaller with the color purple added to its color scheme and keeping the snow storm and having the inner part (shivera town) be the big part would be cool
I think the largest problem is that over half of the purple coins are in the 4 sub areas. 10 more are inside the town(That's ok), so there are only about 15 outside.
This is one of my favorite kingdoms 😔
Am I the only one who really enjoyed this kingdom?
yes.
20:48 I thought he said Starbucks for smash
He did XD
I feel like they should have made some types of actual snow activities you could do to get moons. Maybe like a skiing race or something.
I would love to see this for every Kingdom and every 64 stage
When the Minecraft oof sound effect sounded, it genuinely startled me
I HATE the Madame brutale and the Bowser rematches. Mario in them sometimes takes a mind of his own and just straight up walks into the bullets. That combined with my camera randomly moving makes them a nightmare
I agree that the Snow Kingdom is the worst kingdom apart from cloud, but I think the feeling of isolation was intended here. This is a harsh climate that very few people would choose to live, and it feels like there's no civilization around you. Heck, even if there weren't barriers you would still get that same feeling of isolation. I personally find the walls around the outside to be a good choice.
About the town itself I feel that the problem is that all of the important areas are fairly obviously located. The Snow kingdom reminded me a little bit of Dragon roost Island done wrong. All of the rooms are fairly obvious and are on the same level, unlike Dragon Roost which has a huge amount of height variation.
I gotta disagree on the walls thing. The walls make the kingdom itself feel more natural and real. The fact that almost every kingdom in the game is missing them just makes them feel very artificial, like in the Metro Kingdom for instance why is there this part of a city just floating above a void with thousands of other buildings miles below? It doesn't feel organic. The Lost Kingdom and Seaside Kingdom tackle this issue correctly, by the former having a large poison ocean surrounding the small island and the latter taking place near a towering cliff side next to a vast ocean. Mushroom, Luncheon, Moon, and possibly Cascade would've felt so much more real and organic if they had barriers instead of being sloppy floating islands surrounded by a much bigger world. Hills for Mushroom just like in Mario 64, being inside a massive crater for Moon. Sand Kingdom is fine with the large valley surrounding the level but they should've had more valleys out in the distance surrounding other islands of dunes to make it look consistent.
I also have to point out I disagree with the mentality that the snow Cheep Cheep is a bad inclusion to the game, and that it should've just been a normal one. Yes, it was used in very lackluster ways and yes the name is extremely lazy but the reason i like its inclusion is that it's something that gives atmospheric variety, which is not something this game does too often at all outside of this and the Para-Goomba / Para-Bones capture. By this I mean when there is a specific enemy or game mechanic the game wants to use, but it doesn't match the environment or atmosphere of the area. Odyssey sadly seems to go in a more lazy route to this by making only one kind of enemy or hazard to fit any situation, like instead of quicksand in the Sand Kingdom, or super cold liquids in the Snow Kingdom, the game will always use purple poison no matter how thematically appropriate it is. I know this is just a nitpick but these kinds of things go a long way into making every area feel completely unique and isn't reusing the same assets, which again is something this game does WAY too much.
16:59 "Obviously these are both captures"
*yes*
