  • Rin: Daughters of Mnemosyne is a curious little 2008 niche TV series, and an interesting time capsule that combines ruminations on the transience of life with softcore hentai plots and action detective capers. It doesn't entirely come together, but it's probably unlike anything you've ever seen before.

    By the way, it turns out this was actually a TV series airing in a weird monthly time slot, and not an OVA like I thought it was this entire time. Me bad and dumb. Also, saying the early 2010s was the advent of smartphones really being part of our daily lives might be a bit of a misnomer. They certainly cemented themselves as such by 2010 but iPhones were already huge within their first year or two (07/08) and they revolutionized the game, but I think I said what I said because as I was growing up, I only really noticed around 2011.

    The ending of the video really drives home how coming contact with this show in the past, planted a seed in me to seek out shows as fascinating as this one moving forward.

      Glad to hear it. I definitely wanna cover more weird and interesting underground or actually obscure titles in the future here and there. This one was surprisingly rewarding with how many people I convinced to either watch this show or at least have it in their radar, video or no. Hopefully next time will be with a show I find actually really good and not just an interesting mixed bag.

    Nice angle you went into this show. I hope to enjoy it once I decide to watch it.

    Ah Rin: DoM. The OTHER Elfen Lied.
    Definitely one for straddling the line of philosophical quandries on transience of time and life... while having multiple lesbian orgy scenes.
    Thankfully I do still appreciate that sex isn't (just) for titillation but legit is a major facet or interrelational closeness, something both perverted (not just sexually but power exploitatively) but also in many point very intimate, especially with how close it shows hoe Rin is with some people
    Like for all the absolute depravity the show goes into, the hottest part for me is just the half second where one of Rins last lovers just...takes the time to help her onto a desk for a more comfortable position for her.
    Even if it definitely deserves some flack for being b-movie prevention of booba and blood, I also miss when there was as much a space that something COULD be written about mature subject matter period. regardless of demanding high(ly restrictive) standards first

      It definitely is a mix of both. It's what a friend of mine called "classy sleaze while also having other fascinating things to show.
      I didn't even truly think of that, how often Rin's romantic and sexual nature with several people only extends to those close enough to her and what she does, beyond those she has to bone for information, though I would have probably had a bit of difficulty organically incorporating that observation in.
      That is a nice detail and I can see why it makes the scene hotter for someone who gets something out of these scenes. Adds that extra bit of credence to the closeness of Rin and Ihka's relationship.
      Indeed. I just wish the show's torture porn rep wasn't the main thing associated with the show, though I do feel that it being treated as a litmus test for what media you can consider smart or accessible is only really there for people entirely not used to mature media which deals with sex, in general. It would definitely be cool to see more anime do things like this, tho ofc that would be difficult with TV regulations, as it almost undoubtedly was for this show.

    Just finished this and I guess it was interesting. They just don't make anime like this anymore. Good video on covering the technology of the anime and how it relates to modern day society. Sometimes the torture went too far but I agree it had some restraint.

      Thanks for watching and I'm glad you enjoyed the vid. This show really is one of a kind, eh?
      I can't say I necessarily disagree tho I wouldn't say it became a complete turnoff despite feeling that maybe some of the sex and torture stuff was beginning to be a bit eye-rolling.

      @@SerialNavelgazerCBF Lol i just ended up giving it a 5/10. Anime's that came out in the 2000's were really something else.

    Seems like a nice introduction to the series. Haven't watched it myself. I wonder why exactly they decided to include all that torture, but I'm guessing that it could be to emphasise that the fragility of life doesn't apply to immortal bodies, which alienates them from society and makes them not as sensitive to time passing. Is that implied anywhere in the series?
    Should be noted that more people were using flip phones in Japan compared to Western countries, so perhaps smartphones were less of a consideration during the production of the anime or they didn't have the same big impact in Japan in their first years.

    • @SerialNavelgazerCBF
      @SerialNavelgazerCBF  Před rokem +1

      Glad to have done a decent job with this.
      Part of it is definitely for the sleaze and brutality of it, but it definitely shows the really inconvenient side of immortality in this series and how that alienates them. The scene where Maeno watches in horror as Rin regenerates herself is the best example of this, as part of that episode afterwards is the girls' insecurity that he'll leave them after seeing their regeneration and immortality firsthand as many others have. Actually, episode 2 might make the best case in terms of Rin's separation from mortals, They're still very much sensitive to time passing as much like us, they can go on long enough to hardly even remember stuff like when they even first noticed their immortality.
      That makes sense. The first iPhone only reached them in 08 as noted (in text) and given that the show began airing in February of that year, yea there's no way they'd have accounted for that by the time episode 4, or even the series as a whole for that matter, finished production.

      @@SerialNavelgazerCBF Yeah you still actually see a lot of flip phones that have a lot of the capabilities of smart phones in 2011 (Steins;Gate, Kamisama no Memochou, for example though admittedly the source is older on both), and later into the 2010s the touch screen styled smart phones became the standard.

    • @SerialNavelgazerCBF
      @SerialNavelgazerCBF  Před rokem

      Def not surprised that 2011 anime productions starting around the tail end of the 00s still went with these ideas (esp when stuff like Steins;Gate VN did it too earlier in the decade). Still interesting to see how many of Mnemosyme's predictions wound up being either entirely true or not far off, and that while the flip phone screens thing never quite stuck like that, it's still interesting to discuss given how radical phone culture changes are both IRL and especially in the show.
