    Thanks Dustin. I just ordered the F017 and am looking forward to its arrival. The slightly longer than normal focal length for standard shooting is always something I've been drawn to...and to add macro capability is an absolute bonus.
    My kit contains Canon 6d, 30d and Rebel 5ti bodies with 14, 24 ts, 17-40, 24-105, 50 stm and 100-400. The 90 macro will really round out my creative choices.
    This was a very factual and accurate review.
    Thank you for your help.

      @@rialbb A great review of Dustin. Let me tell you something. It's not the price always that tells you the good of the lens. Before I make my order I always use to look for reviews. Just compare Tamron and Sigma with Canon when you are looking for lenses.
      Tamron and Sigma lenses are quite good lenses with good qualities and more than $1000 cheaper. My next Macro lens will be the Tamron 90mm F2.8 Macro (F017) for Canon after my research and reviews. Hope my hints are helpful. Regards from Curacao Island.

    Wow, another excellent review from Dustin. Very informative especially for us who are looking to buy a macro lens (and will be my portrait prime also). For us shopping, the first question is how does it compare to the gold standard (Canon 100mm L) and you have answered that question. I would have liked to see more footage of the actual usage like how fast the AF is. I have the new 35mm and the speed on that is average. Having said that, I would compromise on speed to have better precision. To your credit you did mention that the 2nd Gen 90mm was already good and this new one even better. I don't think you mentioned if the AF was accurate but if you had no complaints on the previous one and this new one is better then I am assuming no problems there. Keep up the awesome work. Looking forward to the printed article.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Před 8 lety +1

      +lyndon mendoza The new one is noticeably faster. I mention that it is now as fast as my 100L and perhaps faster to rack the full range of focus.

    Very nice review. Tamron really stepped up their game in terms of build quality. Mine feels and looks fantastic. I found mine to be a little jerky on the focus ring though. It's very smooth to turn overall but when it comes to fine adjustments, the focus ring tends to jump slightly. I don't know if I bought a lemon but the slight jumping in focusing is noticable in filming at macro distance where the depth of field is so narrow.

    @ArnsteinBjone Před 5 lety

    Excellent review. I like your style and your kind of video review. (Now subscribing, of course :-) )
    I bought this lens 2 weeks ago, and I love it. My first Tamron, by the way (SLR-user since 1971). I have 5 Canon L-lenses, 4 of them are quite expensive for an amateur (11-24. TS-E 24 v2, 35mm 1.4 v2, 100-400 v2)
    I found this video in search of a detailed description/explanation of the VC, on what are happening in the viewfinder.
    Until I focus, i.e. pressing and holding the AF-On button in my case, the image is (of course) shaking/unsteady.
    Then, when I hit and hold focus, the image kind of "freeze". Shooting at 1/10s gives perfectly sharp images.
    My Canon EF 100-400mm v2 also gives me sharp images at 1/10s, at least at 100mm, but what I see in the viewfinder never "freeze" like the Tamron do.
    I just would like to know more about the differences, and which stabilizing system does what. Or, if you like, I want to more about image stabilization in general.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Před 5 lety +1

      Tamron's systems are often very good at freezing the viewfinder. They have simply been very good at executing image stabilization, and have put it in a wider range of products than basically anyone else. What you are seeing is experience.

    Very detail and excellent review as always, Mr Abott. Greetings from Jakarta. I own Canon mirrorless M5 and would like to check this lens bokeh, autofocus and sharpness with Canon adapter. Does this combination makes any diffrence in performance? Do you ever heard any issue on this lens with that combination (mirrorless + adapter + Tamron sp 90mm macro)? Thanks...!

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Před 4 lety +1

      I've not experimented with that combo. The only one of those factors that would be affected, however, is autofocus. The adapter has no lens elements, so optical properties are not affected as long as the adapter seats properly.

    Great review,
    For your info Code F004 is an old version and F017 is a Newer version as you mention.
    Differences are that the Code F004 has a problem with Live View on some Canon Cameras and has no Image Stabilizer.
    The Newer version F017 has no problem with Live View and has builtin Image Stabilizer.
    I did appreciated your way and style to talk about this "State of the Art Macro Lens".

    I realize your interest is in this lens' use in still photography, but I'm wondering if you could comment on the dynamic behavior of the F017's VC compared to the F004? I noticed a bit of ratcheting in the framing of the shot where you tested for flare from direct sunlight, an effect I've seen in some optically stabilized lenses intended for still photography. I find the stabilization in the Tamron 24-70mm f2.8 VC works well for handheld video, and would be interested in which of the two 90mm f2.8 VC versions you think would perform more smoothly for video shooting?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Před 7 lety

      The upside of this lens is that you can actually tweak the behavior of the lens' VC for video in the Tap In Console. If you choose the "Viewfinder Stability Priority" mode it is designed specifically for video work. I find the Tamron lenses in this mode work well for video.

    I have the F004 and it is definitely a good lens. However not sure whether my copy of the lens or the design was flawed, I have dust went in into the lens from the front element after just 2 days of use. Since small aperture has to be used during macro photography, the resulting image was ruined. I sent the lens back for cleaning, but was forced to add a UV filter so no more dust will ever get into the lens.. Kind of annoying though.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Před 4 lety

      That's a complicated subject that a lot of people are confused by. ALL macro lenses have a changed effective aperture at close focus distances (that's physics). For some reason, however, Nikon bodies actually show the closing down aperture on their bodies...but only for the Tamron lens. The physical aperture size doesn't change, however, and is still F2.8. The amount of light that can be gathered at macro focusing distances does change.

When framing a shot - with AF & VC activated - if I release the shutter button (e.g. to reframe the shot) the image in my viewfinder shifts position slightly. This doesn't happen when VC is off so I assume the problem is related to the VC mechanism? Are you aware of this issue? +Edoardo Marino (Dodi) Technically the aperture will always be at f/2.8 no matter the focus distance. I've heard that rumor before, but it is baseless. The physical aperture does not change. The amount of light that reaches the sensor at very close focus distance might, but not the aperture.

    • @EdoardoMarinoDodi
      @EdoardoMarinoDodi Před 8 lety

      That's great! Not that I would consider shooting minimum focus at 2.8, but having this lens be with fixed aperture will act as a great traditional prime with a huge focus advantage. would you recommend this over the Nikon 85mm f/1.8g?. I'm planning to buy either of the two for my d610. I mainly shoot portraits but also want to try macro. Is this lens also good for portrait shots?

    Would you choose it over Canon 100mm f2.8L IS USM Macro? Or would you stick with your Canon L series macro lenses?

    Hey Dustin, if you had the option would you buy the canon or tamron if money was not an issue. The benefit I see of the canon is that the camera will do lens corrections if you shoot Jpeg. All of my other lenses are Canon L glass accept for a Sigma 120-300 2.8 Sport. Great review.

      @DustinAbbottTWI  Před 7 lety

      If the lens corrections are a big deal to you, then stick with the Canon. I've owned one for five years and it is exceptional. The new Tamron has a better build and might be a bit sharper overall, but there are some limitations to third party, to be sure.

      I don't see why not. It actually has a smaller front element than the Canon 100L (62mm vs 67mm)

      Ah, the MT-24 fits onto a 58mm filter thread (it was designed with the MP-E65mm in mind). A step-down ring would do the trick for the Tamron (as it does for the 100mm L lens), that would make it even more of a desirable lens to buy.

    Since I bought this lens everything about it was brilliant except one small part - when manual focusing, the ring is very smooth except when I want to do a very small adjustment, it kind of jumps a bit more than I need. Don't know whether that's only my copy of it but it can get a bit frustrating from time to time.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Před 6 lety

      +Oxidator Interesting. I don't remember having such an issue, but 1) it has been a while since I reviewed the lens and 2) it could be copy specific.

    i have a previous version in an adaptall 2 mount. Used it and loved it till i switched to digital. Then around 2008 i went with the sigma 70mm. Now in 2016 i'm going full circle and using the 272 version. Really wish i had more glass options for the k3

      yep. I only use primes so it isn't a deal breaker for me but that dwindling 3rd party support has me looking at nikon or cannon when i jump to full frame in 2 years.

    Hi. I'm using a Nikon DX body.I'm confused between 85 & 90. I can only buy one. My main priority is portrait , including children . 90mm is also cheaper than the 85mm. Which one will b better ?

    • @DustinAbbottTWI

      I live the versatility of the 90, although the 85 gives nicer subject isolation.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Před 5 lety +1

      That depends on where you are talking about. I don't think it is sharper with both lenses at F2.8, though it will be sharper at close focus distances.

    • @themarksmanABP
      @themarksmanABP Před 5 lety +1

      @@DustinAbbottTWI I was thinking it would make a great portrait/macro lens but realistically the 85mm 1.8 would be a better buy due to having the 70-200 f2.8 anyway. The 85mm and 90mm are the same price here pretty much in the uk. I'd love it tamron dropped a 135mm 1.8 with their great vc!

    Hi Dustin. I've been dabbling in Macro photography with extension tubes (on a 50 mm prime), and I'm seriously eyeing up this lens to be used on a crop sensor, but I´ve heard talk about focus breathing with it. I shoot Canon, and their 100 mm macro L is pretty expensive for me, though I'd consider a second hand one. What do you think? Thanks in advance.

    • @DustinAbbottTWI
      @DustinAbbottTWI  Před 3 lety +1

      Focus breathing for what? Video? You get 1:1 reproduction with the Tamron, so you aren't getting focus breathing for stills. I still think this is a great lens for the money.

      @@DustinAbbottTWI My reseach leads me to believe that I can get a new Tamron or a used Canon 100 mm L for around the same money. I think I´ll go for the Tamron.
