- UK-based company Social Chain is one of the most prominent players in social-media marketing. With an average age of 21, employees control more than 400 accounts - such as Hogwarts Logic, Medieval Reactions, Student Problems, and Love Food - and weave brands into their content in an attempt to create trending topics for clients.
“These are the people that, before this was a - we came together - sat in their bedrooms, influencing all those trends,” 24-year-old founder and college dropout Steve Bartlett said. “The only thing is now, they do it here.”
Last year, Social Chain’s revenue grew by almost 600 percent, to almost $7 million dollars. And it’s projected to double in 2017. VICE News correspondent Hind Hassan met the young influencers who have developed a reputation for being able to set and manipulate the online conversation.

All the comments hating on social media, whilst commenting on social media. Lol.
Herding the sheep
amen
I was thinking the same thing
Consumerism on steroids. But with an instagram filter.
Jorik Chovan Consumerism isn't bad. I'm also sure that some of these individuals would ironically consider themselves socialist, or anti-capitalist.
people in the comments are hating. if you were smart you'd start a business and use social media to market. this is exactly why average people stay average. too petty to help yourselves.
Jennifer -and when these people become rich, some will start bitching about them holding too much power and wealth, and how the wealth should be redistributed.
Jennifer you say petty, but really these are just the masses of people who were taught and still believe that the internet is some organic, free thing. They simply don't realize that all of this is just many, many business and marketing/PR companies feeding you whatever message they want ala 1984.
+The Middle Man And those things are bad because? Do you actually enjoy being lorded over or what?
You'd have to be a moron not to know the future of the marketing lies on social media
True
It's a circle jerk of people who got lucky on Instagram and gained traction ,now they use it for financial gain .This world is pathetic .
But honestly, what's pathetic about it?
Thank you, glad to see that someone understands .
I find that if we're born with the gift to change the world for the better physically then we should at-least make an effort. What these people do has no part in that so to me frustrated and they have a ecotistic/ecocentric view on life . HEY but in the end of the day let's just be assholes on the internet and assume people's personalities huh ?Wouldn't you agree? :D
It's advertisement money many do it. How they get there isn't that important.
Stop hating
Why the hate? They found a vert effortless way to pimp the system- their office would shit all over our traditional boring office system
"Who wants to eat a Stupid Cookie when you can have a Glorious Biscuit"
wow, this is actually really fascinating that a certain group of people can really be so good at drawing people to them, and getting people to talk about things.
The salt in this comment section, yikes
They created a 7 figure company from the ether. We should be taking notes
I remember when vice had news crews in Liberia covering the things no one else could or would cover. You guys used to be the alternative media getting in everywhere and covering everything. What happened?
If you pay for enough bots on a click farm, you can make anything trend within 11 minutes.
don't dislike the video. this is good journalism - you hate the people who are described in it, not the news outlet.
so a 24 years old college drop who suddenly has alot of money build a company and now have the power to influence thousand of people through social media and also work with other older companies to promote their wares ? what kind of business do they do with other companies ? also i hope they use this power to promote some charities organizations.
Don't think the dislikes are against vice, but the people they reported on
makes sense. They are like a think tank kind of though with massive influence.
What a hard job. They are really hard working people, wow.
pretty sure under marketing laws in the UK this is illegal. Social media may still be a fucking joke but it's still technically media. So if any brand came to them for sponsorship or gave them stuff for free to use they would have to disclose it in every frame it was visible just like they do now for youtube. Any one who is from the UK care to explain advertising regulations? I watched a Tom Scott video on it and followed Tomska when he was going through his bullshit with Oreo and a couple other companies
This aged well :/
Where's Obama with drones when you need him...
How can they claim it is 'organic' reach when they pay the CZcams kids to promote brands merchandise?
So a glamorous shiII farm?
why
Because shilling works, it got Trump elected.
they're basically pooling their influence. wow. the fact that this works...
would die to work for this company!
Social Chain rules, Steven Bartlett rules
Some young people start a consultancy.. That is nice.
It makes money, it's not unethical, why all the complaining.
That job seems really cool!
SO. MUCH. APPLE.
They should have to inform their followers that they are marketing/ being paid to post, with "#ad" just like Kim K rightly had to do. Your followers are following you with the belief that you are being genuine. Strategizing about what to market/ Sell while being compensated is not genuine. There should definetly be more transparency. #falseadvertising
Nathan Barley
so basically it's a huge instagram/twitter pod with a bunch of followers in each account...
Does anyone remember when Vice actually made quality content?
everyone is hating, but this is appearantely working out really well...so why not accept that
1:05 We are the influence 👌🙌🙌
I can't believe the comments here. This guy Bartlett is A) a genius B) an archetypal workaholic. They are also a marketing agency, so, they're not in the business of curing cancer but marketing shit and, also, having that in mind they are more honest than marketing agencies of the past.
Every woman with a diamond on your engagement/wedding finger, that your guy grossly overpaid for, take a good look at it now! There you go, that's a Steve Bartlett of the past, that's his work. Before a marketing manipulation someone pulled on people in the 50s diamonds were just shiny stones someone had a lot of and paid a marketing agency to tell everyone you can't get married if you don't buy one, and/or they're a status symbol if you're a rich woman or a woman with a rich man.
Even more insidious than that was a campaign to get everyone to smoke cigarettes. Yah, smoking was a marketing campaign.
This guy and his company quite transparently tell you what social media is, this info is something you should be thanking them for, and you have a choice to be on social media, or not, and how to use it.
Stop hating on Steven Bartlett, you are simply wrong to do that. He was dirt poor and he didn't use his high IQ to become a drug dealer or gang boss...He isn't living on benefits in UK complaining how capitalism is bad and he's a victim either...Instead he's been working 10+ hours a day since he was 15, and he actually became a fairly decent human being, especially for a marketing guy. He says he was skinny when he was a teen, now you can really see he works out and he isn't skinny anymore...
Everything about this guy says he works hard, too hard for my taste! Personally, I think he needs to slow down, find someone decent and willing to sign a prenup and get married! Start building a life outside work...His personal life (that is none of my business anyway) aside, to hate on this guy just makes you sound like a bunch of bitter old people that can't keep up with the times.
Creating no real service to their county or society. About on the level with the advertising industry.
Living memes
Ugh social media is just getting worse by the day
These are the people you would avoid at the pub!
"...collectively, you are Illuminati."
"you said it! not our words!"
Illuminati confirmed
self employed trolls factory ))
RIP VICE
It doesn't work against the smarter, more aware people. Only on the countless sheep. As usual...
This is very alarming
Not clear how #AmericanVsBritish would generate revenue, must be an unmonetized "campaign". In which case, what would a monetized hashtag look like...#Eatfresh? lol
3:08 Weirdo clap.
I wish I had a high paying job you know so I can pay my bills and not starve to death.
Wow...
The sad part is that I can make a hashtag gain traction simply by using my BOT network. In less than 1 hour people are going to start to catch on the hashtag, and boom. You get it to trending in the region.
Also, these guys are going to be useful just for, let's be sincere, 5 years until the AI kicks in and makes ads even smarter than they already are. There are already neural networks that can find "controversy" in different popular topics. Now we just need a neural network to adjust itself by "yesterday's most controversial topic" and flood the social networks. Btw, social networks like Facebook and Twitter are slowly getting populated by older people and at the same time are dying out. The "next generation's" social network is a more sociable one, where you can't spread ads so easily. More like Instagram or Snapchat. That's where you will need different types of people to kick in. People like Casey Neistat. People that can create "viral art"; not young adults that know what's trending on Twitter and how to make people argue over the internet. I wouldn't invest in this guy's company in the long run tbh.
@@me5ng3 well this didn't age well
Sad
*DELETE YOUR FACEBOOK*
If one were so inclined, there is a tor address for FB
just keep NoScript on
This dude went to my school, we keep having to learn about him m he has no GCSES
Nathan Barley anyone?
digital mercaneries on sale !
One word: Hipsters
The sad part is that it works. People nowadays are like a bunch of sheep waiting to be steered in the "right" direction.
Notification squad
So these are the guys that run those garbage parody accounts?
Super depressing.
Dank Memes...
LOOOOL
So many butthurt comments. Too bad none of you are smart enough to actually earn as much as these guys did.
Innovation at it's Best..... People doing what they love without any pressure. Definition of youth involvement
The world would be a much happier place if the internet was never created
While watching this I knew there would be a lot of hate in the comments... and sure enough. I realized while watching this how threatened a lot of older and more conservative people would. They see these young liberal looking kids being successful and having a huge influence on the new world around us. They hate that. Jealousy pure and simple.
gaylluminati
wtf
Why are Millennials still the big talk nowadays? Pretty sure the focus is gonna be moving onto Gen Z.
gen z is still too young.
Mister Mood Gen Z just hit college.
TacoMasters Association i thought that was millennials
Mister Mood Read this article: socialmarketing.org/archives/generations-xy-z-and-the-others/
Trump is Cain while Hillary is Abel shepherding the millenials.
if I could get paid to do jack Shit, especially something that will not have any impact and I can get paid well??? Shit, I'd do it buuuutttt too bad I get paid Shit and so make a difference.
I think people are more annoyed that this company is making money this way. Purely because it seems to be so easy. When realistically it isn't because if it was that easy, you'd be making millions of it from your home and thats why your jealous.
stop hating go and be productive!
I just unsubscribed
The hate levels on this video lol. Its not Steven’s fault you didn’t think of this idea of how to get rich lol.
Awkward
Ohhh I can just imagine how easy it would be to pay them off for your political benefit...
Irrelevant
Old Social Networks are dying out. They are platforms populated by old people. If these guys really want to be "a step ahead" they need to hire people like Casey Neistat (just an example). People that can create "viral art". Not on shitty platforms like Twitter (basically a platform that tried to sell itself for a fraction of its price 3 years ago).
Anti Nulled you know it's not just Twitter right?
What a load of crap
NERDS
These people are propagandists
why are comments disabled on the video for the transgender child. Oh wait nm.
We are the digital influences
nope, you are people with no real job
I don't think these jobs are going to last and when they go out of business, those employees aren't going to have any skills for a real job. Getting likes or creating trending topics is not a job, at least not a sustainable one. And even if the business stays alive the employees inevitably are going to age and no longer be a part of the younger generation. I should hope that they are at least pursuing education while working at these companies.
i think its actually the opposite of what you just said. Times are changing. These 'real jobs' you are talking about will start disappearing due to automisation. The people that understand social media, coding and different parts of what makes up the internet are the ones that will be ok once those jobs dissappear. Check out 'humans need not apply'.
