Toyota's Yaris family expands with its second entry - the Yaris Cross small SUV. Remember when automakers used to build wagon variants of popular hatchbacks? Well you can think of the Yaris Cross as essentially today's version of that trend.
It takes the components of the Yaris hatchback and re-packages them into a unique-looking small SUV body, adding a healthy dose of ride-height and a new electric all-wheel drive option in the process.
Can it offer buyers better value than its controversially-priced hatchback sibling? We've driven it at its Australian launch to find out. In this review we'll break down this car's individual grades, its price and relative value, its safety features, its looks and design, as well as how practical it is.
We'll also weigh it up on paper against its popular rivals, like the Volkswagen T-Cross, Mazda CX-3, Hyundai Venue, and even the Subaru XV which is its closest hybrid competitor.
We'll also asses what it's like to drive, and take a look at its fuel consumption, both the claimed/combined figures, and those we extracted in the real-world.

I hope that the build quality is better than the standard Yaris. With the standard Yaris the door close with a tinny "clang", the metal is very thin and the screen surround on the dash easily falls off. Here in the UK the standard Yaris starts at a really pricey 20k (UK pounds) If the Yaris Cross has the same poor build quality as the standard Yaris, I will be buying a Suzuki Vitara mild hybrid, which in the UK starts at £20k (UK pounds.) Thanks for a great review.

Guys, I thought I would get some genuine reviews. My wife and I have been looking for a small SUV. We test drove:- Mazda CX3, Mazda CX30, Mitsubishi ASX, Hyundia Kona, Kia Seltos, VW T-Cross, Skoda Kamiq, and a Toyota Yaris Hybrid, RRP approx $35k. I got as far as around the block from the dealership in Sydney. The car was gutless, noisy, vibration in the steering, steering just vague, interior with lots of empty cheap plastic empty places for switches, hard plastic everywhere, uncomfortable seats. SHOCKING. For $35. This is a car for $16,999. and even then, I would not buy it. Little wonder that Korean cars were able to penetrate the market.

This car like many others these days is nothing more than a PCP deal fashion car to keep the industry ticking over. A car designed to be traded in after two years so the 20 year old woman still living at home can get another silly pretentious fashion car. We have a silly segment that never used to exist, with a myriad of makes and models calling themselves Crossovers or SUVs to appeal to fashion conscious buyers. People used to keep cars for many years, traditional hatchbacks, saloons and estates but the industry relies on people changing their cars often, so by producing trendy looking cars with designs that go out of fashion quickly, it generates a greater number of sales.

A segment designed to generate more sales by aiming cars at fashion conscious buyers. Car makers have latched onto the current trend simply by bringing out jacked up hatchbacks with plastic cladding and calling them SUVs or Crossovers. SUVs that are mainly FWD and would get stuck on wet leaves and Crossovers ? What ? Crossing over into what exactly ? Its all clever marketing bullshit for millennials. They lap it up.

Hope Toyota brings this to US. I’d rather own this over the Corolla Cross which looks like a boring shrunken RAV4. Or bring the hybrid CHR to the states. There is way too many boring looking SUVs out there. This actually reminds me of the old Scion XB.

the hybrid 2wd drives soooo much better than the hybrid awd.
    awd 0-100 = 13sec
    2wd 0-100 = 9.8 sec
the awd felt like it is constantly struggling and the electric engine was never running alone always needing petrol assistance. The 3cyl also shudders off the line as it's not a balanced engine and has to rev to get any power out of it.
The brown interior actually looks okay in the flesh, the worst part of the interior is the centre console just seems like an after thought. No middle arm rest due to their is airbags between the two front passengers.
Best colour choice, white with black roof in urban trim. Looks like a mini Jaguar E-Pace from the front

I think you will be on your own with that puke interior and it is so easy to scratch our test demo car showed all the scratches especially around where the phone sits

The brown trim on that particular car is awful. The rest is nice. I hope that it will have a moon roof or a sun roof. I have the CH-R which is superb in every way except no sunroof or auto tailgate lift.
