The best thing about the Pink Diamond reveal is how complex and two-sided Rose Quartz became. Instead of being this saintly, perfect character, she is now highly debated. I personally believe that while her intentions were good, she was naive to the aftermath of her actions. She acted off of her own gut feelings with the sole purpose of protecting Earth. Little did she understand though that her good intentions would cause so many new problems and existential dilemmas. Even Yellow and Blue, who have shattered countless gems, are going through their own psychological issues. And now here is the issue of her deliberately giving gems flaws to bring to her side without understanding the self esteem issues they would have. This is truly an amazing show.
Theme Park Crazy Well, considering that even on Homeworld, with its endless patrolling shatterbots, Steven ran into defective gems immediately, defective gems have to be very, very common.
They're literally everywhere no matter how brutally you suppress them.
So if Pink just doesn't shatter 30-40% of new gems, she'll have tons of defective ones.
Cassandra Belyeu also this video is kinda miss leading because peridot stated that this planet was not ideal for gems to grow because of changing weather etc. Etc. So it makes sense that there will be mishaps and runts and abnormal gems because they aren't getting the exact same nutrients and minerals as some of the others.
You can see how PD grew from an angry child in Jungle Moon, to a passionate teenager in A Single Pale Rose, and to a regretful adult in the Greg flashbacks.

that means for all we know, she could be a horrible general - didn't prepare for the diamond attack, didn't investigate the cluster, every interaction outside of her own orders where big failures!
Tiefsee Granted, the diamond attack was outside Pink's power to effectively counter without exposing her identity. Though that may not have been an option.

Tylerian Pineapple if she planed for it, she could easily bubble her army, wait for the attack, break the bubble and win - or gather more behind her shield - and there was a warning, a short one bit a warning - as soon as the enemy gems start to run - she could have kkown what's up
Jasper mentioned Rose's recruitment tactics when fighting Amethyst twice. I always thought she just meant it in regards to Amethyst and Peridot, but it would make way more sense if Jasper picked up on how Rose recruited gems that were at their lowest points, i.e. coming out messed up from their kindergartens. It's weird too because many gems have lauded Earth as having great resources, and yet it produced off color gems. That doesn't make sense.
martiansascha7 that would mean jasper is the true offcolor! Jasper didn't come out as pink D intended - a cripple at a low point for recrution! And she must have been there when jasper emerged - because jasper started fighting as soon as jasper broke free of earths crust - meaning rose knew the sketchual and that rnough gems would be deformed so she csn recruit them. Because no ssne rebell would go into a kindergarden that's about to hatch good gem warriors
There is one think at least soften the blow of this: most of the Off Color Earth Gems have aesthetic flaws, not PHYSICAL flaws. Skinny Jasper, our Amethyst, and Carnelian do, but most of the flaws seem to be things like skin color, hair, or eyes, rather than crippling defects like the Rutile Twins or Padparadscha have. Even with those three, it's hard to tell if they're actually weaker than the norm, as while yes, Amethyst got curbstomped by Jasper, Jasper is a PERFECT Quartz, and everything indicates she's way stronger than normal to begin with, and Amethyst rarely if ever trained in her life, so that fight wasn't fair even if Amethyst was a normal Amethyst.
So while there is a darker side, it seemed Pink may have been aiming more for aesthetic 'flaws' than crippling ones, which actually has a somewhat positive twist on it fitting the ideals Rose preached of individuality by making them look unique and different.
There's definitely still a darker side, but it feels worth mentioning the Off-Colors from the Earth only really had aesthetic flaws rather than genuinely crippling ones.
Godzillawolf1 deformations like the rutile will he destroyed as soon as they emerge - and even if they are allowed to fight, do you think compleatly mutated gems would survive a war or ve allowed to exist after the war?
I think its normal for gems of the same type to have minor differences, as we see with the famethyst (other than Skinny and Carnelian)and the Ruby squad. They're not perfect but Jasper was the exception, they're standard gems. I think it was more Holly Blue insulting them because they're from Earth than because they're defective.
Now that makes me wonder, in one-on-one fight, or in a tournament, which of the rubies would win? Our Ruby from Garnet, or one of the Rubt squad, like Navy because she's so smart and deceptive? Would our Ruby have an advantage because of her expanded perspective and strategies/fighting style that she created by being fused or would the fact that she hasn't spent much time recently as a lone Ruby put her at a disadvantage?

i actually thought she said "you off colored betas" meaning that the betas as a whole were off colored going into what Peridot said about it being a rush job to quickly make an army.
I sincerely doubt Rose would have intentionally created defective Gems to strengthen her numbers, as Gem production would have used more of the Earth's natural resources, which would have been completely counterproductive for her end goal of a liberated Earth. I would imagine that the Prime Kindergarten was made at the start of Pink's colony, before she fell in love with and decided to save the Earth.
What I think helped Rose's cause was the fact that many of the Gems in her court may well have been off colors and hand-me-downs the Diamonds gave Pink so they wouldn't have to deal with them. This would explain why OUR Pearl could serve Pink despite that fact that she, unlike the Pearls of the other Diamonds, bears little resemblance to Pink. These defective Gems were the ones who took to heart Rose's message of acceptance the most.
After faking her own death, Rose would have likely tried to convert as much of her old court to the Crystal Gems as possible. But it's clear after Pink was removed from the equation, the other Diamonds were quick to try and take control of the situation themselves, we still don't know if Jasper ever got to see Pink Diamond, but I have my doubts, and it would make sense given that Yellow clearly converted the Prime Kindergarten into the test facilities for the prototypes of the Cluster, she may have been responsible for the Beta Kindergarten's creation as well.
If Gems like the Famethyst WERE made to just bolster the numbers of the Crystal Gems, Pearl would not have been freaking out over the reactivation of the Kindergarten back in the episode "On the Run". And the Famethyst would have remembered Rose coming to try and recruit them.
About Pink Pearl, that would become Crystal Pearl:
She probably looked the way she did, because she just didn't use pink clothes, and she didn't do that, because of 1: Pink had encouraged her to experiment with other colours and 2: As Crystal Pearl, she was supposed to not have any master, and any single colour variation would make her recognizable as following one or another.
The Beta Kindergarten does just seem like they where rushing out as many soldiers as possible locally to fight back the Crystal Gems. If the Beta one was made to make Crystal Gems Jasper would not have turned out how she was. Or I would think not
Indeed. If Jasper had instead been made to serve the Crystal Gems, she would have brought it up, but she seems to be completely devoted to Homeworld's way of thinking.

What I've been wondering is why Pink's outfit changed in Your Mother and Mine. I'd love to see her in her dress. I'm guessing all the Diamonds change their outfits from time to time, since even both Yellow and Blue have changed outfits a few times as well
FunkyReptile It was how Steven imagined Garnet's story. He probably imagined her in a dress because Garnet described her as a spoiled brat.
tbh I think that has more to do with revealing the characters before a final design is decided, plus artistic liberties each animator takes.
PD's design was already revealed in Jungle Moon though? And both Blue and Yellow have had different outfits as well, so I'm guessing the Diamonds have more liberty over their outfits. It just seems strange they'd make a new outfit for Pink for no reason

FunkyReptile It was just the way that Garnet portrayed her, just like how in "Gemcation" she was also seen on a creepy matter.
I think maybe the theory about Rose making gems wrong to make it easier for off colors to get with her ideology is a bit too out of character for her. Yes she started a gem war and caused a lot of tragedy but her initial actions were fueled by love and goodness. This theory isn't quite fueled in the same way Rose's actions would by her character. She got people from the prime kindergarten to follow her cause and many were not off colors. So I don't think she needed or wanted them to be off colors to join her cause.
I'm starting to think something IS wrong with earth though. Maybe the changing conditions made the gems come out really weird or something. Maybe it was someone else who was forcing her to make more gems quickly like white or yellow.
Ajani Reign Peridot say that because of the war they needed more gems to fight so the beta kindergarten is product of that need. They probably rush gems so they could came out faster to fight.

Chrisvenn Bowman i was wondering the same thing, then i took a closer look. The "doorways" to each section of the homeworld kindergarten are marked with symbols, the last one being a diamond and a small line either on the side or under it (i'm guessing to indicate each court)

At least as far as we can tell right now Amethyst being defective wasn't intentional. Every other Amethyst in her line came out normal and Peridot examined her hole and the rest of the Prime Kindergarten and didn't mention any foul play. It's likely minor aesthetic differences are normal and every now and then some gems just come out wrong.
But if we do get some kind of flashback where Pink just happened to nudge one of the amethyst injectors off it would be really messed up.

Honestly, speaking as a trans person myself, there is a lot about her that I resonate with. I think changing one's gem like that isn't bad the way a lot of people are portraying it - the issue was her particularly being formerly PD and, as PD, not going openly against the diamonds.
Obviously it isn't a direct allegory, as gems are monogender as far as we know and different types of gems have a separate caste component.
You can't steal an off-color's parking space unless you have the special parking tag.
As Steven points out, he was on Homeworld's surface for just a couple of minutes before he ran into the off colors. So, we can assume that being off-color is already pretty common.
What's more likely is that Pink Diamond didn't simply destroy/banish her off-colors like other gems may have. Or maybe Pink simply banished her off-colors to the Zoo, instead of destroying them.
It might even be that she sent all her normal gems to the Zoo to keep them of planet while they where rebelling. As I think they said that the gems in the Zoo where taken from Earth probably during the fighting not before. Same with all the Rose Quartz who where recalled because of Pink
Well, I have another theory that there isn't actually such a gem as a rose quartz, though it might be a fusion. Pink probably just crushed some dirt into gems, in the shape of her sideways diamond and then bubbled it.

Maybe. But you would think that The Diamonds in the last few thousand years would have checked the gems. And the reason why Fluorite might have said that is because it's a secret gem native to Earth. And because of Pinks persona Rose Quartz they where all recalled and hidden as not to give people any ideas about rebelling. And you would think that if someone like Fluorite knew there where no Rose Quartz that the Diamonds would know it as well.
Also I wonder if she meant the Rebellion leader Rose Quartz and not the gem type itself maybe? That or it's just that buried.
The Diamonds would have no reason to un-bubble the gems. Yellow never visits and already wants to wash her hands of Pink's legacy, while Blue wants to maintain everything the way Pink left it.
And the Diamonds probably don't know much about fusions, as fusion seems to be very restricted on Homeworld. But someone like Fluorite might know if it's a fusion, because she was probably made of multiple fusions. We aren't sure if a fusion can also be a gem, but we haven't so far found another Garnet, so the odds seem low.
Tune in next episode when the roundtable proves that Rose/Pink is the actual spawn of Satan.
I dont't think Pink sabotaged the kindergarden from homeworld. Remember she is defective HERSELF so is more likely that all that area off-colored from the begining.

Why is she defective?
I feel the reason Pink Diamond decided to change her appearance to become Rose and sided the Crystal Gems more is because if Pink decided to come out of the blue and rebelled against the other Diamonds, if the CG fails, Pink would get into serious punishment (I doubt they are going to shatter her because they love her dearly) and since she started colonizing Earth, either Yellow or Blue Diamond, would finish colonizing it for themselves, thus killing all life on it as well as the humans who lived there. So the Rose disguise was meant to stop the colonization at all costs and faking Pinks shattering was hopes to scare Homeworld away. But one thing that Pink Diamond didn't expect to happen was the final strike by the Diamonds since Pink doesn't think they cared so much about her.
It's a little sad to consider that things might've been different if the Diamonds just showed that they loved her more then almost not at all.

If rose did sabotage her own court, i think it would be because she wanted them to be the closest to humans as possible who she admired. She saw that humans were all beautifully flawed but still considered them perfect in their own way.
That reminds me of what Jasper said to Steven thinking he was Rose "you want Gems after they're worthless because when you are at the bottom you follow everyone who makes you feel less of a failure"

Peridot yelling at corn, Lapis watering the garden, garnet being mysterious, pearl being a little bit salty and a hole lot caring, and amethyst eating trash and annoying pearl.
I love the changes of Steven Universe but sometimes it’s great to go back to the older episodes.
All of those Amethysts came out right. Only the beta kindergarten gems were off colored. And 8XJ's hair and eyes have nothing to do with defection. Peridot simply stated her hair came out a little curly because the place she emerged from had iron deposits in it

You should also take into account since I didn't hear you mention this in the video because it's easy to consider Pink Diamond herself as a defective Diamond because of how short and misbehaved she was compared to the other diamonds, which is why she saw potential in Defective Gems. Because ever since her debut in Jungle Moon you can tell that she was VERY SHORT compared to Yellow Diamond and how Homeworld and the Diamond Authority are biased against Defective Gems while ignoring it for Pink Diamond.
That's why she would favor Defective Gems outside of being Pink Diamond.

Jasper made the same point you made too, where Jasper said Rose recruits gems when they are at their weakest when they feel like they are worthless.
I love the Easter egg when the amethysts are moving out they say “but 8XM hasn’t emerged yet” and well, that’s our amethyst.

Well, Steven Universe is a show about embracing imperfection. That's probably why Rose loved the defective gems so much.
i dont think it matters much if she was willfully making situations that would lead to defects. That'd be like making a robot that had to drag itself around while all its siblings could walk, watching it suffer, and then saying "well gosh you should just accept your imperfections".
Good thing it's just a theory for now.

It could be possible, but PD was inexperienced on where she should set up her kindergartens. And who knows? Maybe the earth does have certain things in the soil that affects the gems’ development.
Hey, I came up with a little theory about white diamond.
So, you know how all gems have powers right? Well, that obviously means all the diamonds do to. With yellow, she changes their physical state. ( *Poof* ) and blue seems to effect their mental state. And of course, pink fixes damaged/hurt creatures and gems.
So....what white diamonds? diamond powers seem to all have something to do with creatures states and statuses, that most likely means whites power is a state change to.
Me personally, I think it's memory. I mean, if you remember, three diamonds, (blue, yellow, white) combined their power and created the "corruption".
Yellow contributed the way they looked and formed
Blue contributed the way they act when they form
And white...white changed their memories.
With all of that, they created gems that we're crazy (blue), deformed (yellow), and had no idea who they were (white).

Jasper accused Rose of rounding up the defective gems to her side when confronting amethyst and Steven
In the episode of Jasper’s corruption, I believe she said something similar about rose quartz- how she waits to recruit gems until their broken or wrong “because when you’re at the bottom, you’ll follow ANYONE to feel like less of a failure”. Which I feel like kinda sums up Roses/Pink’s tactic with sabotaging her kindergartens so they become defective and off colored thus they’ll follow Rose’s Crystal Gems.
I have a question: If Pink Diamond's Pearl is the same as Crystal Gems Pearl, then wouldn't anyone recognise her? Like the homeworld, when the war began?
It honestly makes all the sense in the world when you put it all in those contexts.
Interesting theory I like it mainly because it does maybe introduce the idea that she really was selfish. Wanted to run away from her problems and truly just wanted to be alone on earth with its life. That she didn’t even care about her gem kind perhaps only human life or life on earth.
I don’t think the Amethysts from the Human Zoo are defective; they just posses minor differences much like the Ruby Squad. It all has to do with how they are incubated. Peridot mentioned that Amethyst-8XH’s hair was curly because of the “iron deposits” of her exit hole.

reminds me of something Jasper said, something a long the lines of Rose going to gems when they are at their mental weakest, like how Steven tried to help Jasper when she was at her weakest, shows the possible manipulation of her making her gems off colour so they would be more likely to be treated badly by homeworld, thus being more likely to revolt.
I remember when Jasper said the same thing but in just a different way right before she became corrupted. She said along the lines of " I see how you do it now Rose. You want gems after they're worthless. You wait until after they've lost.Because when you're at the bottom you'll follow anyone that makes you feel like less of a failure... ". I've just always thought about what Jasper said and now that we know Rose was really Pink Diamond, I have to wonder how she'll react when she finds out about her precious Pink Diamond .
What if Pink Diamond did all of this because she was lonely. Pink Diamond was an imperfect diamond in command of her very first planet. Sure she was protected by the fact of what her gem cut was but what if she felt that she needed someone, another gem, to relate to her loneliness. And by creating the kindergarten she was hoping another gem would come out imperfect like she was.

Can you imagine Amethyst coming to a realization that her and the rest of the Famethist crew were made wrong on purpose by the very gem she was inspired by? I’d love another character arch (hopefully a final one) episode for her and her being so self conscious.

So I think that rose/pink are actually quite easy to understand when you consider crewniverse are huge anime fans. I think that she has a clear parallel in the character Lelouch vi Britannia/Zero from Code Geass. I would love a breakdown of the two, cause there are a few parallels, from planning their own death, to hiding their identity to help the legitimacy of the rebellion.
Also that would make Pearl C.C., Garnet Kallen, and Jasper Suzaku... Which works too well...

They did make note that one of the things that kept Rose’s rebellion going was the fact that she could heal her cracked soldiers. This probably helped immensely since they would never lose too many members. Plus, it’s a good selling point to bring up in recruitment. “These diamonds don’t care about you as an individual, but Rose will shed tears for every fallen ally and in her love for you, she can seal your cracks”

"Sabotaged"? Uh, not sure if I'd say that. I think that's just how they came to being, I don't think Pink ever interfered with the Kindergarten, even as Rose, well, maybe, but, probably not until after they came out. Except for our Amethyst, but I don't think she was sabotaged either.
I know this sounds stupid, but imagine if pink diamond was a fusion of pearl and rose quartz..
I would LOVE them to go back to the Kindergarten and find a newly emerged gem! Totally overcooked and off colour, and amazing! It'd show a whole new angle of gem birth

From what I can tell Pink Diamond always acted like a Diamond even as Rose Quartz. Every action she made could arguably be just as brutal as Yellow Diamond. She proved she really was on their level, in all aspects. She did her programing to the T. Create and lead an army to wipe out the dominant life forms and colonize. The crystal gems have continued to act to their gem/homeworld programing. The Ruby and Amythists are fighters, the Pearl serving her Diamond, the Sapphire giving advice on the future while the Diamond ruled like Blue said waving her and smiling.
i think this is definitely true. and earthlings seems to really foreshadow this. jasper talked about how gems who came out wrong, reshaped themselves etc were purged... THEN she said to steven, amethyst and peridot as she was corrupted, *"i see how you do it now rose. you want gems after they're worthless. you wait until after they've lost. **_because when you're at the bottom you'll follow anyone who makes you feel like less of a failure."_*

Other pondering: PD/Rose's self-shattering plan - apparently meant to deceive the Diamonds, among others - doesn't explain Yellows behavior at the Trial. All I can think is that she's somehow relieved about Pink's demise, and there could be several reasons why. Or she was somehow aware of the plan and went along with it.
So after thinking about it for a while I realize what and why Amethyst and Jasper are so different, Amethyst Represents "The Worst Coming out the Best" and Jasper is "The Best Coming Out the Worst
Do you think Pink let Jasper be "the perfect quartz soldier" so homeworld wouldn't be suspicious about how many "wrong" gems were coming out? Sorta like "hey, you had a bunch of duds, but look at this amazing gem! She's the best and that's all that matters..."
Yellow Diamond knows something. Maybe not everything but i think she knows more than what she's putting on to know.
Every time you showed a clip of peridot i was like "AWWWWWWWW SHE LOOKS SO CUTE AND TINY AND CUTE AAAAAAAAA"
I feel like, maybe her gem court being off colored and resenting themselves might be one of the reasons Pink wanted to break away, like maybe her being a Diamond wasn't enough to love themselves truly. It took a "Rose Quartz" to find themselves and truly love themselves in who they are. I feel like maybe she found that out when she was first starting to be Rose, and did genuinely love them and wanted them to feel as though they are perfect, despite their flaws. It's what makes them, them. That's what I think, at least.

Maybe Pink wouldn't care about her Kindergarten anymore or the construction for more gems, cuz we all now know how the laws of the gem world and the Great Diamond Authority goes and she felt about its rules.

I was starting to wonder about this, too. But I have a few things to add.
1) How do you know the Off-Colors were hiding in the Pink Diamond section of the Homeworld Kindergarten?
2) Was Holly Blue Agate being sincere when she called the Famethyst “off-color?” We can see the Beta Kindergarten Gems like Skinny & Carnelian were flawed, but the Prime Kindergarten Amethysts have few flaws that would interfere with their Diamond-given purposes. I thought Holly Blue called them all “off-color” because they were from the failed Earth Colony and weren’t as refined as the sophisticated Gems.
Pink created the beta kindergarten to appear that she was making a large effort to combat the war. This betters her chances of covering her tracks
I always believed that Rose Quartz was interested in off colors (which I called messed up gems at first). She always seemed to pull people who were broken to her side... and Jasper's corruption acknowledged my belief... and I think this video just hit the nail in the coffin for me.
