  • Retired empty nesters, Betty and Ron, are longing to sell their three-bedroom, end-of-terrace home in southeast London to move closer to family. But after 16 months on the market and over ninety viewings (Betty has handled them all herself), the disheartened couple is running out of steam. The Grove Park home would be perfect for a young family…But potential buyers just can’t see beyond the worn carpets, retro furnishings, and dizzying kaleidoscope of patterns and colors. (And to make matters worse, the neighbor’s front lawn is a junkyard.)
Enter real estate experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They promise to take control of the situation. And as John shakes down an underperforming estate agent, Sofie and the team neutralize the décor, turn the junk room into an office, and create a contemporary look designed to make a great first impression.

I very much agree. Sophie's comment was that this work cost under £500. Add that difference to the cost of the area rug, and I bet doing it right would not have been prohibitive. Were it my home, I would have laid ceramic tile or flag stone on the downstairs hall floor. I hate walking in the front door directly onto carpet. Very difficult to keep clean. Run the hall flooring through the kitchen and extension, and use the same carpet in the front room as well as the second reception room (if there is one), upstairs landing and all 3 bedrooms. Clean, fresh, and it would make the house seem much larger. I do like the way these updates were done, but why paint over wallpaper? With a team working together, all of it could have been stripped in less than a day.

I was very disgusted that the real estate agent shoved off her job on this kind elderly couple, showing people around their home. You can bet the agent will take her FULL cut of pay even though she did precious little to sell it, other than send an endless stream of people for them to take around the house, when she should have been doing it herself. You can be sure she would have been more selective to people who might REALLY be interested in this property rather than every Tom Dick, or Harry 92 times if she had to show them all around herself! I was happy when Sophie’ show partner ( forgive me but I don’t know his name). There was a family who came by to see our house. The guy who was finishing up a bathroom in the basement told me that the kids ran all over the place banging doors, flushing toilets and turning on faucets. The parents did nothing about it. When we got back home after the viewing was over the kids had broken a lamp shade and a $450 bathroom faucet. One of the kids had used the toilet and there was poop smeared on the toilet seat and in the bowl. A brand-new white hand towel was wadded up and left on the counter. It was obvious that one of the kids had jumped on a bed.
Our Realtor was our next door neighbor and I told him to tell this family's Realtor that they weren't welcome back into our home. Our neighbor said he wouldn't want a family like that living next to him.

I have never heard of anything like this - when we put our last house on the market we went out and left it to the agent. When we bought our present house it was only 12 years old but it had cinema style dark red carpet all the way through including in the bathroom, and the walls were painted all sorts of all strange colours but I did see past all that and could visualise how I could make it my own. Surely more people can do that? My daughter is house hunting and is looking for an old doer upper that she can extend and add value to - she is not interested in a house she can move straight into.
