- With an oversized empty nest, Maria wants to sell her four-bedroom detached home in leafy Burghfield Village, West Berkshire. But with just five viewings in two years, the listing has flat-lined despite a deep reduction in the price. With its garage and garden, the home has lots to offer. But its plain master bedroom, dated décor and mismatched colour scheme are proving a major turnoff. Maria is desperate to downsize, and says she’s ready to move on. But she has also refused to put a ‘for sale’ sign on the lawn.
Enter real estate experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They promise to transform the home’s prospects. And while John gets tough with the agent and overhauls the marketing plan, Sofie takes a less-is-more approach to the interiors, and adds a much-needed touch of class. Will the spectacular results reel in a buyer?

#UnsellablesUK
Sophie has never handled a paint brush in her life, no point trying to fool people
A lot of commenters seem to think this is a full-on home remodeling show-it’s not. It’s about STAGING homes for as little money as possible to effect as quick a sale as possible. That’s why they use cheap makeovers techniques such as painting over wallpaper and cabinets, or replacing fake granite countertops with inexpensive butcher block.
Buyer beware!
EXACTLY! And excellent point! It’s a fix-up, and a staging NOT a remodel.
Exactly
@@jaredsmokes420 Did you really expect a full gut remodel? lol
Ohhh ok! Well I’ve only seen this show on CZcams, so I thought the concept was to make the home beautiful so it would sell. That actually makes sense now. No wonder they do white and another colour.
I don't think Maria really wanted to let go of her house because it was where her children were raised. Her lack of enthusiasm could have meant she really wasn't ready to let go of all her family memories in her house. I hope she finds a small home for herself that she will really enjoy.
That agent needed ditching. No communication and no action. Just two tiny photos on the inside of the brochure? For a four bed house? And not a pic of the gorgeous garden? Bloody mental! That huge living room with the patio doors leading right out into the garden should have been a Major selling point. Living room was gorgeous after yet still kept the small office area and the fire place was So much better for being painted. I really hope she got a good offer and was able to move on with her life without that millstone hanging over her 😊
I totally agree! That agent didn't get started working until the camera crew showed up and lit a fire under his arse! If he had even communicated that she needed to declutter and update the style then she could have handled that two years before, had the photos taken instead of it sitting on the market so long! I hold him entirely responsible for doing a shoddy job on that.
Just goes to show you if your selling your home, to always check in and see what they’re doing to get a sale done.
The curb appeal needs work. Trim the bushes and replace the dead plant with a blooming flower. Sweep, clean windows, etc. I noticed on the "For Sale" sign there
was no phone number for buyers to call. Is that something in England? In the U.S. there is always a phone number for the sales office.
Hilarious that she thought the locals knew all about the house, and it was for sale. If they already owned their own homes, why would they want to buy her house, and go into bigger debt?
There WAS a phone number, but very small and behind the bushes nobody will notice.
Also need to address kerb appeal, the clutter continues outside the front door, too many pots with dead stuff in them and also in the rear garden.
Painting over wallpaper is a NO NO and watching Sophie use a 2" paintbrush on a full wall looks ridiculous, especially in a dress and heels? I'd also like to see more rooms like the kitchen and bath. Curb appeal is essential and nothing was done for that.
I was just thinking NO NO paint on wallpaper when I read your comment. Better to leave it for the next person to take off if you aren’t going to. Yikes! The paper didn’t look so horrible that it couldn’t be left.
Sloppy work...
That is utter nonsense, I have painted over wallpaper always, as long as it isn’t 3 or 4 layers it should be no problem at all with a good quality paint.
@@caseyglenar7268yes it did look horrible actually, it looked daunting, now it doesn’t.
They clearly aren’t experts and she said on this episode “when I got into real estate”. So she’s not a designer. You don’t become one because you think you can redecorate a room. This show is nuts, but why do I like watching.
Painting over wallpaper is such a no-no...I would never wish that on a buyer!!
You'll see it on lots of "home renovation" programs, especially ones filmed during the real estate bubble crash beginning toward the end of 2007 and lasting through about 2014-2015, depending on where you lived. If the paper is firmly attached to the wall and doesn't have a raised pattern, it was the cheap recommendation then to paint over it with an oil-based paint (not a latex paint that is cleaned up with water) rather than paying somebody to remove the wallpaper or trying to take it down yourself.
@@jannibal9273 That wallpaper in both living room and master bedroom could have been down in a day for both. Granted it was a smaller room, but working alone I stripped all the walls in a bedroom in about 2 hours. Most modern papers are solid vinyl now, and "dry strippable". Peel off the top layer, soak the paper underneath, keep it wet and with a wide putty knife, if almost falls off the wall.
In Germany we never paint walls, we paint over white wallpaper as often we have brick walls. Just imagine a house build in 1900 and the number of paint jobs on that walls by 2021?
REMOVE wallpaper, do NOT paint over it.
I just bought a house where the seller has done that. I’m sure I’ll be swearing about fixing that for years.
I see this was circa 2008, financially spongey time. Houses weren’t selling and unscrupulous lenders gave mortgages to unqualified buyers who eventually drowned in the debt and walked away. I just sold my house in this incredible seller’s market (2022) in three days at 1-1/2% of what I paid for it 3 years ago. Friends came in and stripped it of any personal pictures, knick knacks, vases, etc. Nothing was on the kitchen counters except for two appliances. You want the buyer to picture themselves in the house, not admire your possessions. I donated, tossed or stored everything. It worked.
Really would like to see more of the home, like the kitchen, master bath, even if they were lovely and didn’t need a make over. Instead we get repeated shots, over and over, of a couple rooms. Disappointing and unsatisfying. Also, too bad they couldn’t rid the living room of the dated carpet.
Yes. For me, the kitchen is the prime area of interest in a home.
Painting the walls white only showed up how bad the carpets are.
I see that the house has been sold twice again since 2009 and the decor has been done again. Also, the external doors and windows certainly have been changed at the front of the house. The driveway has been paved and it looks like a lot of the shrubbery in the front and back has been cut back. However, looking at the image of the kitchen, I suspect that's what the kitchen was in 2009 and it probably looked good enough back then for them to decide not to change it.
I’m guessing that the budget was pretty tight for this one. The carpet is pretty dated but looks to be in good condition. They were better off spending the money they had on paint.
@@camcab147 where do you find this information?
Omg that price cut is unreal. ONLY 5 SHOWINGS? Get a new real-estate agent...yall got scammed.
This occurred 12-13 years ago - it was filmed in 2008, during the height of the U.S. financial crisis and real estate bubble that spread around the entire world and led to a global recession December 2007-June 2009 - "officially." But definitely the real estate agent was for crap!
I really wish these would include a follow-up of the house selling and perhaps how much for. As it is, the episodes feel unfinished.
Given that these episodes are from over 15 years ago, it's not going to happen lol.
I really wish they had professional painters on this show. You need to clean and scuff cabinetry before painting or the paint easily chips off. You might as well put all that furniture in a burn pile because you’ve now ruined it. And do NOT paint over wallpaper. So many other solutions.
What makes you think they didn’t? They did and even primed everything.
Yeah I agree, most furniture looks much better when polished or taken back to its natural wood. After painting furniture they could sand it back and treat it; but it’s basically ruined and if they’re family heirlooms or something the owner is gunna be so pissed off. Why not ask first?!
@@jessieb7290maybe they did
I've watched so many of these Unsellable episodes and I'm always amazed..at how bad the makeovers are. Who the heck is on staff that makes these horrible decor decisions? Someone with no experience? Granted the house was a mess to begin with but..take for instance the hallway, that stark white isn't attractive at all, yuck. It's what I like to call 'glaring' white, no warmth at all to it.. and the master Bedroom color scheme, really? If I were that homeowner I'd be in tears. What a missed opportunity.
When Sophie walked into a house with white walls, she would have criticized the sterile look and sparse furnishings, and painted it another color. The large hangings on the wall are a useless expense. The new buyer has to patch all the holes in the walls.
This is not an interior decor show where they show you modern, edgy, gorgeous designs. It's a show where they try to make houses appeal to as many people as possible. I agree with you that the make-overs are kind of boring, unpersonal and stiff, but the point is to make it easy for potential buyers to see how their furniture will look, or what it will look like after they paint the walls their favourite colour. It's easier to look past a boring white wall than striped wallpaper, paisley couches, tons of clutter, and sometimes even dirt, mold and damaging.
I don’t like the staging decor but it’s neutral enough I could live with it until I could change it vs the way it was before that would have me running.
This must be a show about What NOT to do if you are trying to sell your house... Really painting over wallpaper, fireplace brick and real wood???
The carpeting is dated and doesn’t add anything to the decor. If there were hardwood floors under there will be a great move to just take out all the carpeting.
the so-called artwork that the so-called designer added in the living room was unappealing at best.
Also what about the other rooms?
But even if there were hardwood floors under the carpet, they would still need to be refinished and refinishing the floors of the entire house is not feasiable within their time frame and budget. They also can't do every room in the house, which is why certain rooms are not shown because they're good enough to not be staged
As a realtor or as they call us in GB, estate agents, sellers can absolutely be their own worst enemy. You can make suggestions, but the seller has to follow through and do the work. And as this episode demonstrates, even after you've done some updating, it just doesn't guarantee that you will find a buyer in a timely fashion. Real estate is NOT for the faint of heart.
Give that women a roller, watching her paint that wall with a dry paint bush was torture.
Actually this was one of the better homes. It was clean just dated. You can tell how young sofie is the house is def 80's not 70's.
Old reruns. LOL
Yep - no way was that 70s 😂
Yes either earth tones and country or granny style, or Victorian style, pastels, and Laura Ashley floral wallpaper and floral bedding for the 1980s. I agree on that. This was an 80s home.
1970s? Shag rugs, neon tones, modern, psychedelic, wood paneling, sleek.
@@ritacampbell3833 i never had shags, neon tones and panel walls (i had beige, cream and browns) but I did have popcorn ceilings ( nightmare) in the 70's lol but this house is decorated 80's for sure!
It really annoys me that she doesn't know eras well when they have her decorating and she's a realtor. Like the dates are listed on things.
And she always uses them as a go to descriptor and as a jab to the homeowner, so I just wish she was better at it.
Maybe england and canada have different home fashions than the us but they seem similar? And people have mentioned that her family was well off and maybe that plays a role in not seeing average houses and styles?
Awful how they painted over the wood in the bedroom, and didn't do the INSIDE of the doors!
The house is not the problem. This is a beautiful home. But you can't expect to sell when the estate agent has only brought 5 people to view the house in 2 years!
Paint the garage door, power wash the driveway and paint the inside of the cupboard doors they painted, shoddy job (people do look) and she might get a sale. No one likes a half finished job.
The homeowner needs to remember that the house isn't being updated for her but, rather, for potential buyers. I think sellers forget this. Once it's on the market, it's not really your home anymore.
Why is Sofie painting the living room with a 4" brush? She should be using a roller.
for the show. She didn't really paint the wall. The camera guy said, here's a brush. pretend you're painting the wall.
The clinical white paint in the halls and living room is painful to look at! A softer cream or pale gray might have been more inviting. Mom and daughter didn't seem to excited about the makeover and the real estate agent was odd. I think this is all just reflective of the general sense of worry and sadness during the recession of the time.
She can’t let go, the agent is tired of her and the unsellables didn’t have enough time, people and money to get this job done properly. What a frustrating combination.
The perfect storm. A buyer who doesn't want to change for a sale and an agent who blames everything and everyone but himself.
Well if the people won’t follow his advice cleaning the house up etc he can only do so much

A lot of the suggested changes were stupid, actually.
It’s not the 70,s. All the decoration is the 80’s. Surely as a decorator you would know that?
I just went on the same rant as another comment! Drives me 😧!
I don't feel Maria had moved on "emotionally" from the house. She shouldn't have had problems with the suggestions of painting, purging, etc. You have to be active in the process. If Maria is not willing to update interior and purge to get house ready for sale, there really is not much a realtor can do.
I love British understatement but Maria falls more into the "nearly comatose" range.
And with that much clutter & furniture, it's hard to keep a place really clean.
This was a dated home, but you turned it into a cold doctor's office look. I agreed with the criticisms. However, when you were done, I infinitely preferred what was there before. That home has a lot of potential. None of it realized.
I've never seen anyone paint a wall like that O.o nor paint over wallpaper ... nor leave carpet in a bathroom ... yikes
I agree! That usually makes the paint job look awful! You can see the seams on the walls!
House has no curb appeal. Get rid of the high bushes add some color
Yep the front door should be changed and add some plants at the entrance!
@@005Amergin The garage door should be repainted, too. The teal green paint with the red siding is very off-putting.
I hate the garage way out in the front. See a lot of that in Canada too
@@dittohead7044 In one neighborhood in Oregon I lived in there were a lot of garages like this. The city stopped approving house plans with them because they're so ugly. (My apologies to any commenter who has one. It's just my personal opinion.)
I'm sorry but I hate what they did. The couch and chair looks like a slap in the face.

@@prt9705 Holy crap and the prices on the things they buy is highway robbery.
@@pattyfarghaly1821 Part of the pricing is tied into WHERE (country) they are buying, the rest, I suspect, is the mistaken notion that if it's expensive there is taste/elegance/etc
That agent is hopeless! We're sitting here waiting for the elusive buyers?!? What about aggressively marketing the house? We don't take pictures because people might reject the house based on the pictures. I guarantee that if there are no pictures, people will just move on. Who goes to view a house without any photos? You assume it's a tip and they are hiding something terrible. Plus, if there are other listings with pictures you'll go for the one with attractive pictures rather than one where they are afraid to show you what the place looks like.
That guy needs to go back to estate agent school. His sales technique is stuck in the '70s as much as Maria's house.
Please don’t paint if you don’t know how to paint!
Sofie is NOT a painter.
@@karmad4491 Her painting job was for the camera. Not for the sake of the wall.
What were the kitchen and bathroom like? Why were we only able to see two rooms? And the kitchen and bath are really the rooms that ‘sell the house’!
Who in the world puts white slip covers on red furniture, but leaves the arms out? 🙄🤦🏼♀️
haha! Right? just awful!
Stop with the red.... 🤦🏼♀️
Yes, yes, YES!!!!
Honestly, I rather thought they just traded some "candy colors" for others. The white did brighten up the place, but those red accents made it look like an ice cream sundae... 😂🤣
The green garage door should've been painted white, or another color, too.
I’m not sure if white would’ve been the right colour but the front of the house definitely needed some work to make it look much more inviting!
Why draw attention to it by painting it white ?
@@NYCHeartandSoul I agree!
I wouldn't have painted the fireplace in that stark white.
I don't like the stark white living room and entrance. Too cold. They should have gone warmer. The original room was cluttered and dingy, but much warmer and cozier feeling.
Why was Maria so hesitant to make changes? I thought that she WANTED to sell the house?
She was afraid of what she would get - and right she was!😉
Painting over wallpaper is very common in Britain. They invented textured wallpaper that is supposed to be painted, so they think nothing of painting over any wallpaper.
Thank you. I had no idea that some wallpaper was meant to be painted.
Yes I’ve watched many decorating shows with British decorators and they think nothing about painting over wallpaper.
Does anyone else get sick watching beautiful beautiful wood being painted for no reason? Wall paint brightens things up :/ Leave the trim and built ins alone!
Ugh...the carpets still there. Gross.
Buyer beware!! If you like authentic than this is going to cost serious time and money to undo the damages from painting the beautiful wood and than paint over the wall paper (laziness) a little effort and as s contractor he could get a steamer. But to paint is just a false impression, hopefully they have a home inspection and it's revealed. A GOOD REAL ESTATE AGENT SELLS THE HOUSE AND NOT WHAT'S IN THE HOUSE. ATTENTION TO SQUARE FOOTAGE, CLEAN, BONES OF HOUSE, LOCATION, AMENITIES, NEIGHBORHOOD. THEY'RE NOT BUYING THE DECOR. Painting and maybe window treatments, no clutter ok.
Comparing 2008 with 2018, you will find a big difference in how the houses are prepared for sale. There will be not any of the covering with slip covers; or not removing wallpaper and just painting over it; or covering the counters with sheets of vinyl.
Things do change for the better, sometimes.
Oh my God he put the for sale sign behind the bush
And no phone number or info on it??
He passively aggressively wants the bush gone!
Did they really just paint over wall paper. Oh dear
Seems to be common in the UK.
ACK! I don't like wallpaper but DON'T paint over it!
AND don't paint over fine WOOD !
Having bought a home in the past, stuffed animals on a bed would not deter me from a good home. Shallow.
I actually liked the wallpaper if you had a daughter. It’s not hard to take off if you don’t. I notice-more people decorate with wallpaper again
I liked the wallpaper in Maria’s bedroom! And the dark wardrobe! Don’t paint over wallpaper please!!!
that beautiful fireplace! do they really have to paint everything??
Does she just paint everything white and add canvas or framed pictures of wallpaper?
Taking out the chair rail was ridiculous, it's a lovely feature. No painting over wallpaper.
No painting the green front trim? 🤢
They must have had NO budget this episode, lol. What was that decoration!!
Power wash the front concrete, get rid of dead plants. Very poor impression sets the tone for the entire viewing. Lol, no sign is going to cut your buyers in half.
Frustrating when homeowners are lucky enough to be on show and get help, then they resist suggestions and plans. Ugh.
People can imagine a house empty and painted...that’s easy as a buyer....but what is not easy is finding a really good realtor, it’s all about the pictures when selling a house, how else can people see what they might want to buy!!
Carpet in bathroom, noooo!
Don't they have paint rollers there? Why are they painting with those teeny brushes?
just for the cameras is my guess.
Please dont paint the walls with a brush.
Never never with a brush???!!!
@@margaretalbert69 you cut in with a brush and roll the rest of the wall, or spray
It was laughable
OMG Did you self proclaimed professionals just paint over wallpaper 🥴
That realestate agent is a bum. I’d be showing him the door quick smart.
She doesn’t understand she needed to wipe out HER personality from the house in order for it to have a wider appeal. She just saw it as you getting rid of her stuff.
Everyone who lives in this town, seem very quiet, calm and reserved, from the agent to the viewers.🌸 Nice place to live, I hope it sale soon🦋
Oh god. I am screaming inside watching them paint over the wallpaper!
as someone that lives in a house covered in wallpaper, my mum suggested it would be easier to paint over the wallpaper....sanded it down. SOOOO messy. painted it over it with an oil based primer. I do NOT recommend. I think it would have been easier to just strip the walls and then paint.
I thought the master bedroom looked horrible when Sophie got finished with it. She could have kept the wallpaper, removed some of the furniture, changed the curtains and it would have been fine. Painting over the woman's furniture ruined it. I bet it looks bad up close.
Maybe I'm wrong, but I would think some of the audience for this show are people who want to sell their homes & need ideas on how to get the house ready. Undoubtedly some of them are people like Maria in this episode -- people who raised a family in the house, accumulated mementos, too much furniture, etc. What they see looking around their house is >>home
They seem to have spent less money in the UK stagings than the Canadian or American ones. The UK shows must have been the pilot shows.
Must be way less!
Yes they started in the UK.
She mentioned in one UK episode that they spent only 500 pounds. The budget for the Canadian episodes used to be 3,000 - 5,000 dollars.
The unforgivable for me was the painted fireplace brick. NIGHTMARE!!
Thank you!!! Destroying the chair rail, painting the brick, painting stained furniture, and painting wall paper would have made me not want to buy. I would be thinking how much it was gonna cost me to fix their mess. What they just did would cost them in buyer offsets IMHO.
In Australia there's a program Selling Houses Australia. They have an interior decorator and a landscaper .... maybe outdoor living is more important and kerb appeal is regarded as essential. They show the Home Open, the auction if there is one and the ultimate sale. And the seller's reaction to leaving their often beloved home.
That was 80s decor Sofie, not 70s.
Needs to show more of the rest of the house instead just the same rooms over again.
Besides painting everything in sight was that a lamp shade on the ceiling when you first walk in?
Theres been no design oversight on this. They just got a bulk order of white and drowned everything in it. Cream and white in the hallway? Painting the fireplace white against cream walls.... why ?
Yes, I agree, this great show is not about remodeling, but shows us how to stage a home & do small improvements to sell it. My house wouldn’t sell either unless I emptied it out.
No No No- Never paint over wallpaper. A spray bottle with water & a putty knife works great for REMOVING wallpaper. Take the time, it looks better.
TWO YEARS and no offers? after 3 months i wd have strongly suggested/foisted a staging makeover to the owner instead of languishing in the unsellables column. When I bought my current home, it had been on the market for a year? no one wd buy it bc of the ugly floors and walls and deck. I had the floors replaced and painted the walls, cupboards n kitchen countertop myself. made a HUGE difference and was a fun large but very rewarding project.
What am I missing? In the bedroom, she paints the brown wood white and then she paints the light wall, brown.
Nice house. Original price was too high. Leave the wallpaper. Paint the rest. Take away some of the stuff (she has to anyway in order to move). We didn't see the bathrooms or kitchen. This one was an easy fix.
Bathrooms and kitchens are key.
Bedrooms and living rooms?
Most can be 'fixed' with paint, flooring.
Maybe she didn’t really want to sell it? Mixed feelings about letting it go?
Why do they paint wallpaper?!!!
Because they're CHEAP.
To ruin the lives of a future resident? The only explanation.
It’s a UK thing
I know this programme is old but what is with the constant addition of red everywhere they go? 😁
When selling your home, you have to remember you’re selling it. It’s not going to be yours anymore. It’s always about making. It look good enough for anyone to walk in and imagine their things in it. First sight people either fall in love with it or hate it, and all her color schemes and furniture and stuff made people walk in and hate it. Not only that they’re thinking oh my gosh what do we have to do to this house to get it to where we can even live in it question remember you’re selling the house you don’t want it anymore and you don’t need it anymore. Someone else wants it and needs it.
“I’ll have to think very long and hard about it”. 🤦♀️ Why even bother
The moment she said that I paused it and went to the comments lol.
I wouldn't make a good host of a show like this. When she said that, I would have said "Oh! You're not selling it after all! You want it to continue appealing only to your own taste because you're staying! Ok, bye!"
Because it's full of junk. Clear it all out, do some painting in neutral colors, and stage some modern furniture. Give prospective buyers a chance to visualize how THEY would live in that house, not the stuck-in-the-past sellers.
I don't understand how potential buyers cannot see past dated decor, pink curtains and stuffed animals and look at the size and structure of a house. Why do they need the potential spelled out in badly applied white paint and framed wall paper art?
A GOOD agent, would've been more honest with the seller, to have the property declautered to bring a fresh impression.
Horried make over!
Yes, it's dated, it's a home. It's a home full of memories, but not of the interest buyer. They're not buying the seller, so the seller must remove their personal belongings, colors, etc and make it inviting to a buyer who has no imagination, you have to provide that for them. Always remember the home you are selling is not going to be yours anymore, so it's okay to completely change everything. Since you'll be moving, boxing up your belongings shouldn't be a problem.
Thank you for the upload!
Always it’s just patching up things in a bad way. I suggest always only to declutter and clean the whole house. Take out old furniture and then let the new owners decide on what color on the walls and what floor to put in. And I always miss a look at the bathrooms because these are the most expensive rooms to change….
Jesus Christ 😲 After the transformation the only room that is well and nicely decorated is the bedroom. The rest is a joke.
The woman doesn’t want to sell her house!!
I think the attached garage made the house look smaller from the outside.

An estate agent can't do much when it has been declared unsellable and the owner moves so slowly. Maria to think long and hard about every idea offered, very unpromising. She perks up a bit at the end at least. It's huge. I'm not surprised the unsellables can't renovate/redecorate the entire house in three days.

This is about staging not remodeling. Maria seemed hesitant about the changes to sell.
Should have trimmed bushes out front, painted garage door, more curb appeal needed, and cleaned up the garden area way better.
