  • Party-loving homeowners, Linda and Lee dream of traveling the world…But after two years on the market, and over 80 viewings, they’re still stuck in their three-bedroom, 1950s terrace home in Swindon, Wiltshire. The unsellable property features institutional flooring, loads of unfinished DIY jobs, and a shattered front window. And beyond the trash-filled backyard, also contains ratty furniture, a broken bed, huge hairballs, random cigarette butts, and piles and piles of dirty laundry.
Enter property experts John Rennie and Sofie Allsopp. They vow to get the home under control. And while John has a serious chat with the agent about commissions, and then encourages the couple to replace him, Sofie undertakes the radical cleanup, and performs a spectacular makeover. Will their plan revive the property’s prospects and the couple’s wanderlust?

The lesson here is that if you don't motivate your agent, they won't put much effort into selling it; there's no reason for them to do so. You have a responsibility to engage with the effort. Still, their commissions are way too high which creates resentment in the public so that many people feel the whole thing should be dumped on the agent for that amount of money.

I don't think he Was doing them a good favour to be honest. A good estate agent should have told them to really tidy up, finish the work and be realistic. That he says they'd only just got out of bed before visits, still doing the washing up, and also supposedly didn't tell them on occasions that they were about to have viewings? That's not a good agent. He needed to tell them how it is - smelly sheets left on an old bed for 6 months? Shot out window or perhaps hit with a screw driver but NEVER his hand as claimed, huge balls of dust and also hair, and broken glass on the floor. He needed to tell them to grow up or disassociate his company from them.

Who knows, maybe they did "clean" it beforehand and thought the state it was in was acceptable. (I've known people like that.)
I kept our house spotless and clutter-free while it was on the market. It was ready in 30 minutes to show after the Realtor called for an appointment. It's a 3,000 sq. ft. home. (I had to have time to pull up the blinds all of the way to let the sun in, turn on lights, move the dog bowl to the garage, etc.)

Maybe it was suggested that the house look bad ( for ratings) to make the before and after look better. It's been 2 years?
The owners aren't motivated to sell.
Who knows if the house showed like that when it first went on the market..probably much nicer.
A house doesn't become gross and dirty like that over night..
The couoke probably gave up caring after the first few months with no sale.
What we do in our area is that if property doesnt sell in a couple months, its taken off the market.
Buyers do not like homes that sit on the market for long periods of time..either asking price is too high / sellers won't negotiate or something is wrong with the home itself.
Area could be the next problem.
The way people take care of a home or lack there of is a turn off, but it shouldn't be the reason why its been sitting on the market for so long.
Could be a combination of things, repairs, price, and the area..maybe places aren't selling that fast in that specific area..

Also the walls were too bad to just paint over and costly to re- plaster.

He is so amazed at the transformation and happy. I think the couple needed some help understanding how to get this result. You never know what someone's background is.

Did that interviewer see the state of the house?? You can’t drop the blame on the real estate agent. That house is a tip.

A house with good bones and crappy caretakers. The after in all the rooms was lovely. I really love the way the lounge turned out. Lovely room and a good size. Being a double fronted house, I am guessing the kitchen diner is across the hall. This is a house that would be terrific for a young family who will take care of it and show pride in keeping it up to scratch.

Everyone who is feeling bad for the "poor" estate agent don't! I sold properties for 13 years and he wasn't doing his
job by continuing to list the property in the state it was in.
As an agent you have a fiduciary responsibility to your "client" to guide them in the sale to get the best price and terms on a sale of the property. He didn't do them any favors by keeping the listing in the state it was
    in.
You get what you pay for
and in this instance the sellers got an a sub par agent.

It's ridiculous to change agents. It's obvious that the property wasn't selling because the homeowners are slobs who couldn't be bothered to really do anything to make their home look decent. It really makes no sense to blame the agent when he has to try to sell a dirty nasty mess of a house.
Also, painting a crappy wood floor leaves you with a painted crappy wood floor.

Absolutely disgusting. These owners seem both lazy and ignorant. Sorry to be harsh, but really hard to believe they could not figure out why not selling.

Where the money was coming from, for the house payments and the building materials, food and beer, is a mystery.

The polystyrene ceiling tiles in the "master bedroom" are a fire hazard. The two owners, bent on giving pigs a bad name, have made the house derelict. They should've marketed it as a fixer-upper, or put it into a property auction to obtain a better price. Considering the pile of bills she was gingerly leafing through on the table, the price will get them out of debt and into a comfy cardboard box under a bridge.

OMG 1.5% to an estate agent, that's insane, wow, no agent here in Canada would EVER work for that SMALL a commission, oh the standard is, eh hem
    7.5 % on the first 100,000. and 3-4% on every 100,000. after that !!!!!!!!!!
Yes, you can negotiate with your estate agent but I've never heard of lower than 4% on the first 100,000. and 1% on every 100,000 after that... oh and that is extremely rare to get that low of a fee agreed upon.
