This is Exactly What I Need for the Drill Press Upgrade

- The actuator from the reclining chair I tore apart a few years ago will be just the thing for raising and lowering the drill press table. It has a lead screw driven by a DC motor that's geared down, so the position will lock in place and may not need a separate locking clamp making it very convenient to use.
While I've been doing more Speaker World projects, that doesn't mean I'm not going to be doing the shop projects that everyone likes. But in general I'm slowing things down and won't be putting out as much as I have in the past. I'll also be sticking to projects I really want or need, plus ones that I know will have the best chance of doing well, views wise.
I've been doing this day in and day out for the last 12 years and I'm at the point where I can slow down and try to enjoy the fruits of my hard work over that time. Making the kind of videos I do for my main channel (full project builds) involve a lot of time, planning and work and I'm just not as motivated to work 16 hours per day, 7 days a week like I used to be. Therefore you can expect to see fewer projects from me from now on, but like I said in this video, I want them to be of better quality.

-Stair treads (to my basement)
-Solid wood dresser (to match my night tables and bed)
-6" x 48" belt sander build from scratch

-Kitchen / dining table
and other projects as I think of them. I also want to rearrange and paint my workshop, hopefully that will happen this summer.
So lots of interesting stuff ahead, but it will be more spread out.

I know this EXACT feeling because I am in the middle of it now. I'm a computer programmer and many days the thought of working makes me want to get in my car and just start driving or get back in bed and go back to sleep.

John be careful of that burn out situation. We can’t survive without your rants.
Just thinking about the positives, you do excellent work, great imagination for projects, tackle stuff that ordinary folks can try and replicate, plus have a normal sized shop with bits all over the place. I follow the HiFi channel and remember you can’t have too many speakers or amps. Love the look of the wooden amp by the way.
If it's any consolation, most of us understand burn out and it certainly doesn't affect my viewing preferences; but I' pretty easy to please. I've learned a ton from your content and always enjoy and appreciate your videos.
I worked as a goldsmith and you do a lot of work under a microscope. Like repairing box chains using a laser welder. I would think about hammering a framing nail into a board with a large framing hammer. The contrast between tiny tiny welds and beating the fuck out of a nail always made me chuckle. Always nice to change up what you’re doing.

John I know exactly how you feel about knowing where to start, I go down to my basement workshop there's so much to do before I can start I end up doing nothing.

I used a gas strut on my table for the drill press. Works good.

John, glad to see you. I don't know about anyone else, but I find the idea ofa speaker project interesting. I've looked at several different methods and designs, but like you my workspace is an utter mess, and before a new project gets started, Some of that needs to get shoveled away. Please don't apologize - trying to produce content at the same time as trying to concentrate on building something is hard on the energy level. I'll look forward to seeing you again when you make a post, and say, "thank you" for all of your interesting and inspiring ideas.
that bottle trick was neat. My kids are gonna think im very cool.
Problem with not locking the table is it introduces slop and when drilling hard it will rack and you will lose your perpendicular-ness
That doesn't happen now when I use the drill press without locking the table. And that's with a round column, not the squared off one this will have.
Like I said, I'll have a locking clamp for the times it absolutely needs to be locked, but for the other 90%+ of the times I use it, it should be just fine unlocked.

Your drill press will be one of a kind, that will be just amazing to see. I cant wait. I love having a drill press. I see them all the time online for cheap in case anyone thinks they cant have one,
It's never ending! There is always another project that needs to be started or completed. It's inevitable that if one manages to complete the project they have for themselves, someone always comes along and says "Hey can you do this thing for me?" It's just a vicious cycle. But, as a wise Native American once said, "We shall endeavor to persevere!" That same Native American also said something about hell coming to breakfast.
I"m partially disabled and use a power lift chair/recliner and a couple of years ago I got a new one and I took that part off the old one before junking it with the intention of doing something similar to what you're thinking of doing with yours. I thought of the drill press and the table saw to raise/lower ther blade but never got beyond the dreaming stage. So that mechanism sits down in my shop to this day. So I'm really looking forward to seeing how your build turns out. Maybe it'll inspire me to finally do something with mine.

DIY Builds made a bench vise with an actuator like that. And it works great, so I don't think you're going to have issues with the project.

Lots of good projects to look forward to, specially the kitchen projects since i’m gonna redo mine in the next 2 years. The actuator looks like it will need no locking mechanism at all, looks a lot beefier then what I have for a project ( that I will never build 🙄) and is rated for 140kg. Then again looks can be deceiving and it can't hurt to build the locking mechanism in. As usual looking forward to all the content, but that can't be a surprise. 😅👍
John. I would hire somebody for a day or two to clean up and tidy up places. I have been very stubborn over the years and not ever hiring anybody. The day I raelizes how little amount 100€ for somebodys day or half a day was to get them to clean up and arrange stuff on the workshop. I have ever since keep hiring somebody for every couple of months to do stuff... Big amount of projects on the workshop takes so much physical and mental energy that you really need an extra person to help here and there.
Sounds like you need a sawdust burning stove that not only manages your sawdust waste but heats your workshop.

Well, you've upped the content with that bottle cap trick. You must have way too much time on your hands anymore. I'm trying that trick right now and the dog is not enjoying being shot with a bottle cap, at all.
Have you ever considered hiring an editor for your videos?
The typical video that gets around 100,000 views makes less in ad revenue than an editor would charge to edit it, so I'd make nothing for everything I have to do to design and build the project. And that would be a very cheap editor.
Only way having an editor is cost effective is to have every video sponsored, which is something I have no interest in doing.
Having been in this situation many, many times, John. I can relate: lots of larger projects in progress, none of which appeals to work on *today*, so of course, start another project that I can get done sooner (or so I believe). Frankly, although I know it's frustrating at your end, for me, knowing that even so productive and accomplished a designer and craftsperson as yourself has these moments is quite comforting. I've evolved a snazzy name for my own blocked-project avoidance behavior. I call my short term project "productive procrastination." Doesn't that sound more impressive than what it is?

Your videos are amazing; the sincerity and the fact that they're genuinely your own make them better, but it sounds like the voice of perfectionism in your head is causing you to focus on things that your audience doesn't regard as a problem.
Try softer.
performance stress… as much as i enjoy your videos, i think you need to take more time to just flop on the sofa, enjoy an hour in the garden or a park. you are way more important to yourself than to anyone else. i used to stress myself with to-do lists. this is supposed to be fun right?
