I used bevel gears to solve the same problem for my Ryobi drill press table before seeing your video, but I also 3d printed bearing holders for the steel shafts.
Great idea! I probably should have 3D printed my bearing blocks as well....oh well. Next time!

The fence mod is so obvious now that you showed it to me! I'm doing that one today.
Also, yes, you need a vise. I am really happy with my Yost 5" bench vise for general purpose use. Others can chime in on woodworking vise suggestions.
I actually have a wood vice!! But I never installed it because I was goign to build a new workbench....2 years ago....

I have the same drill press and made the same mistake as you. This is a next level fix but man, way more work than I initially was willing to put in to making a simple drill press table.

That first video was really where I wanted the project to stay. A few hours in a shop,a nice table, done and done. But...engineers have to complicate things, so that's what I did 🤪

I am drill press table impaired, so I went and ordered a Magswitch drill press fence. Now I have a fence that can be used on the band saw table too.

I am going to fix my table for my $10.00 used drill press using magnets to hold the table in place. Easy in, easy out. At least that is my thought. When I get a new, fancy drill press (Nova?) I may use the same idea, if it works. The thought is, I could raise/lower the table and make other adjustments. Rare earth magnets, don't fail me, please.
You made a rather daunting project look easier. WoodSmith did this a few years ago and I'm sure many of us want to do this but it's low on the list and a little crazy. When you talk about making your drill press easier to use and get a nice table on it, moving the adjustment cranks becomes a necessity. I think so anyway. It's also just fun.

If the pilot lever handle is hitting the fence, you could remove it by unscrewing it
Great job, now that you you have lived with the 3-D printer for awhile, would you still recommend that unit? you convinced me that I need...well want one!
For sure! I still run the ender 5, although I have had to replace a few things, and tinker with settings. If you're up for learning how the machine works, then you can't go wrong with anything from Creality or Anycubic. If you want a printer that "just works" check out Prusa.
@@MakewithJake Thanks, I love to tinker with machines, but my time is limited with that four letter word...work! do you have a model in mind for Prusa?
If you can swing it, the mk3 is top of the line. They're a go to Machine for print farms because they are so reliable.
I just ordered the Prusa Mini, which has a slightly smaller build area, but is about half the price. It should be here in a few days, and I'm sure I'll post updates here and on Instagram. 😁

How come the lock isn't in the front?
Where did you find the rod? The only rod I can find that is a hardened and polished steel made for this type of application is 12mm (.47”).
All the 1/2” is un milled low carbon steel that is not low tolerance
Most of the drill press tables that I see on CZcams have T-Tracks to align the fence squarely with the table top. I ask you what would happen if you did not get the fence exactly square with the table? Would the fence still be effective? The fence needs to be a certain distance from the edge of the drill bit you are going to use. When I made my drill press table fence, I made it to rotate on a bolt at the left edge of the table. Then I swing the fence to where I want it and clamp the other end of the fence to the table. This was much simpler to build than making the T-Tracks. I have some comments about my method that basically say, they never thought about this idea because everyone suggested using T-Tracks. Take a look at my CZcams video called "Build an easy drill press guide" and see what you think.
Good point. If the fence is not square, then a thicker piece of wood could change the offset to the drill bit. I think it would have to be WAY out to see a huge change though, especially since the fence is best used for repeating the same drilling operation.

Would it be possible to provide the hardware part numbers.
If you already have a laser use it. But for those who don't, just use a 2" level and a tri square to get the measurement @2:30. Much cheaper than going out and buy a laser.

I can see that it makes life easier to bring the height adjustment out to the front of the table using bevel gears and an extension rod, but why leave the poor old locking handle stuck at the back? Wouldn't the same gear/extension rod arrangement work for that too?

@@MakewithJake Since posting my earlier query, I've made my own two-level drill press table.The bottom level is a rectangle of 12mm (1/2") ply that bolts to the factory cast iron table. It's wider and it extends forward, towards the user, but it isn't very deep, so it doesn't interfere with the handles (or my knuckles). There's a 5cm (about 2 inches) -tall "wall" around the sides and back of that piece of ply. Glued on top of the wall, there's a ply rectangle (2 x 12mm sheets glued together) that does extend further back, to increase the depth of the table and make space for the fence locking bolt. (The fence pivots at one end and has a locking knob at the other). The 5cm lift also makes room for a couple of shallow drawers that I store drill-press-related odds and ends in. So far, it's working well. Of course, increasing the height of the table by 86mm cuts down on the vertical space for a workpiece, but it's a floor-mounted pillar drill, so that's not a major consideration.

I just upgraded my DP and table. I really need the table lock and elevation crank mods. You say you bought a 14mm bore gear. Any particular reason for this? Was this the cranking shaft diameter? I see Amazon has bevel gears - is this where you bought yours? Thanks
Awesome! Yes, I bought the gears off of amazon. The 14mm bore was to fit the 14mm shaft on the drill press. It seems that my particular model was designed in metric, using all imperial fasteners.

The gear varies depending on which drill press you have. but they are bevel gears, available on amazon.
The floor is level enough for what I needed.

I use MOI3D for the project, but I also use Fusion360 for more complex builds.

I use Fusion360 or MOI3D to draw the part, and then CURA to print.
Couldn’t you have avoided cutting your fence and simply remove the feed handle(s) that were in the way? You only need one anyways.

Where did you buy rod stock for 14mm ?
I used 1/2" rod stock from McMaster-Carr, and then made shims on the 3D printer. McMaster does have 14mm stock, but its a bit more expensive.
