  • Training to a surgeon, or any kind of doctor for that matter, comes at a significant personal and financial cost which I don't think is talked about enough (or at least I didn't know it was going to be like this)
Thousands of pounds and hours of "free" time later...here we are.
    ENJOY.

I know I just commented something similar on another of your videos, but I just wanted to thank you again for taking the time to compile and share your experiences on here. Not having any physicians in my family means I only really have the internet and forums like reddit to refer to, which isn't always representative. Following your ups and downs is really helping me open my mindset on how things can go! I'm feeling more excited about pursuing medicine :3

This has really opened my eyes to the realities in medicine because I’ve heard so much about the training extra exams but this vid has allowed me to actually witness and see what it is like especially “ off the clock “ which shadowing and work experience doesn’t show

wasn't expecting to see chesterfield here! i'm a med student and my first rotation was surgery there and i absolutely loved it. thanks for this video, its really useful to see what surgical training actually entails as someone who is interested. i feel like so many doctors discourage women from pursuing surgery from the get go, so thank you for documenting your journey!

Loved this video, found it really insightful and I found it interesting to see the bts of the conference! Also really agree with your thoughts at the end, and its great to hear how finding enjoyment in your work is helping you enjoy life elsewhere 🙌🏻❤️

Thanks for sharing.you are someone that I look into while preparing my journey to surgical carrer. Didn’t know things would be this difficult as I walked into this way being pushed by my senior surgery consultant. Always see myself at some days where I can save lives differently but didn’t know that things would be difficult. On way to Plab 2 and planning to give Mrcs after that .

In common with all professions these conferences are a grossly inefficient way of transmitting info. What could be communicated on 4 pages of A4 takes all day. The benefits of getting away and the oportunity to raise questions are valid but verbal presentations are a drag. To have intelligent professionals sitting cheek by jowl for hour after hour is crazy.

I've quite enjoyed the return of in person conferences after they all went virtual over covid - yes that saved money/commute etc but networking and catching up in real life is really valuable too

Since you want work life balance in this career you are pursuing, you can check out the work life balance of others ahead of you in this surgical career and take your findings into your decision making. This way you plan for nonsense and are prepared for surprises.

Great vid but you forgot to add non reimbursed fees for GMC, indemnity, travel to rotational training posts. Then time outside of work studying for post grad exams & the expense for them… could go on and on
