  • In a recent actor-on-actor interview with Halle Bailey for Variety, Rachel Zegler spoke about her role as Snow White, how much she respected the character and the backlash she's faced. Quite the difference from her attitude a few months ago. Almost like this whole thing was desperate damage control from Disney.

Not only was Zegler coached and told what to say, notice how the makeup she's wearing has softened her features a bit more, to say nothing of lightening her skin tone a lot, and her hair is much darker, longer, more feminine. Combined with the dark dress, it emphasizes her lighter skin tone even more. It's as if Disney is trying to go, "See, she looks just like Snow White. Those bigots are just crazy."

I noticed her complexion was much lighter as well but that was never really the issue for me. Hell, the make up and fx people could turn her into an albino if they really wanted to, but they've missed the whole point of people's antipathy towards her. No, the problem was a matter of personality and no amount of make up can disguise arrogance.

No one is going to believe that Rachel did a 180 in attitude, tone, body language and overall thoughts on Snow White or of her own person in a few months. People will believe it was just enough time to coach her, arrange this 'interview', and hope that the audience is either gullible or have the memory of a goldfish.

The clothing and styling choices are interesting. It looks like every effort has been made to make Rachel Zegler's skin tone look lighter, including making Halle Bailey's look darker. Zegler's face has been framed with jet black hair (formerly brown), and her clothing is deep black, except for white stockings (which make her legs white). All this makes her skin tone look very light. Further, it may just be the lighting, but even her makeup looks lighter. Conversely, Halle Bailey has her hair well away from her face, a white top, and black boots, which all combine to give the impression of a darker skin tone. Similarly, Zegler is 'dressed up', and Bailey looking casual makes Zegler look even more 'dressy'.

But she still couldn't avoid opening that huge mouth. (No, I'm not speaking metaphorically. I mean her actual mouth). Because in the past two decades, Disney heroines (I'm talking of cartoon ones) all have huge mouths, for some reason. Julia Roberts style. Angular features, prominent jaws and big mouths historically wasn't considered pretty at all, women had to have big eyes, oval faces and a dainty mouth. That's why all those princesses are so jarring. And their real-life counterparts seem to follow the same aesthetics. By the way the other Snow White too is not completely suitable in my opinion. (For one thing, she's too old, secondly has an angular, modern face, and a stubborn look, not the dreamy smooth face of a fairytale princess)

Totally agreed with this. Halle is naturally charming and likeable. People had a problem with her casting but not her as a person.
Compared to this self entitled nobody who thinks she's a star now just because she landed the role of an iconic and beloved character.
This sudden change of tune on her is literally fake. You can tell that just a damage control.

The thing is, Snow White is an evergreen story. It's not dated because- surprise!- women still fall in love (we always have) and we often still take on domestic roles (we always have and never stopped). Snow White is treated with the utmost reverence by the seven dwarves and she basically takes over and transforms an unsettled household into a home. If Disney wanted to "modernize" Snow White, they could simply develop Snow and the prince more thoroughly and actually add the process of them falling in love. Maybe the prince saves her due to competence (because, another surprise, women actually love when men are competent) and maybe Snow possess a little more savvy than what is portrayed in the original. We can amplify stories through adaptation... not tear them down. Hollywood is missing opportunities left and right, then trashing the audience because we want actual depth. Instead we get *literal* skin-deep drivel.
And Zegler is full of it. She's trying to change course as a PR stunt. Hopefully people stop throwing money at these horrible movies (the only part where audiences can actually be blamed- we need to stop funding this stuff).

thats why, imo, the cinderella remake is still the best remake for disney (not like the bar is very high). In the OG Disney cinderella movie, it had a lot of cutaways with the mice as a type of comedy break, while in the remake they stepped away from the animals and mice and gave more of a story to the prince and Cinderella which worked out. Just like you said, they could step away from the animal parts in this remake and add in extra scenes for the prince and snow white, but that would be asking too much from disney.

In my opinion, the core concept of Snow White is that TRUE beauty comes from within. The Queen wants Snow's looks, but is a villain because she is completely unaware that people would love Snow even if she was hideous, and they would hate her own tyranny no matter what she looked like. And the Queen's obsession slowly consumes her. Snow, on the other hand, works hard to return the kindness given her by the dwarves, and is so innocent and giving that even an assassin can't bring himself to end her. If she had only been left alone, she would never have thought of the Queen again. Her beauty is a spring that wells up inside her endlessly.
I find it highly ironic that the person they hired to pretend to be Snow White is actually behaving exactly like the Queen. Zegler is arrogant, dismissive, and even cruel to her co-stars. When anyone challenges her, she tries to destroy them violently. Everything has to be about her and how awesome everyone is supposed to think she is. I find it hilarious that Disney doesn't even seem to REALIZE that they've made something exactly the opposite of what they claim.

The thing with Snow White taking on that domestic role is, I never really thought of it as her doing women's work. The way I saw it, she turned the skills she learned as a victim of abuse into a means of survival.
Which is pretty empowering in its own way.

That part of developing the prince more into a proper character is what made The Little Mermaid revolutionary in 1989. Yes, it was Disney going back to its roots with an adaptation of a fairy tale, but the fairy tale was updated in a smart and considerate way. It doesn't bother me that the little mermaid doesn't die at the end, just like it doesn't bother me that nobody dies in Hunchback of Notre Dame. Stories and the retelling of stories evolves as culture evolves, and hypothetically, there's nothing wrong with that. It's all dependent on execution though, and recently Disney has been blowing it. The Disney remakes are universally shit because they prioritize what they perceive as political correctness over quality storytelling. And now the chickens are _finally_ coming home to roost. Yes it bothers me that Lion King and Beauty and the Beast remakes made billions, how could you tell.

That's possible, but there's another possibility: Rumor has it that Rachel grew up in a very upper middle class environment and even attended private school. Assuming this is true, it would go a long way toward explaining why she comes off as selfish, spoiled, entitlement minded and elitist. She already had a reputation of being outspoken and opinionated long before she said anything about Snow White. Remember Gina Carano, the actor Disney fired from The Mandalorian for alleged insensitive social and political comments? Care to guess who was leading the charge to get her fired? If you guessed a young Latina who has a leading role in an upcoming Disney feature film, you are correct. And that's just one example of Rachel opening her mouth and causing trouble. Now, I'm not saying she doesn't deserve a chance to correct her course. What I am saying is she truly deserves all the backlash she has received. Actions have consequences, and Rachel needs to learn just how far reaching those consequences can be when you continue to open your mouth and insert your foot. She's so toxic right now it doesn't matter what she says -- someone is going to criticize her for it. Best thing for her to do right now is go total radio silence for at least six months, then come back with a more humble attitude. She might just be able to bounce back. But if she doesn't change course soon, she'll never find work in the entertainment industry again.

Remember that scene in the Addams Family, when the summer camp councilors locked Wednesday in a little shack and forced her to watch wholesome cartoons for 24 hours straight, and she came out all weird and managed a creepy psychopathic smile? I think Disney did that to Zegler. She disappered for a few weeks and isn't acting or talking the same at all. They hypnotized her and reprogrammed her brain.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with that as a goal, and not every woman, or man, wants to be a great courageous leader. It's extremely condescending of her to speak on such a concept in the way that Ziegler does. She literally says that being a strong female leader is better than wanting to fall in love. I think that's disrespectful, naive, and sad. If you're going to normalize female characters who become strong leaders, you can't banish female characters who want to fall in love. If she said, "who knows, in Hollywood someone could just come along and cut all his scenes", it would've been a lot better. It still bothers me that Rachel called the original Snow White “dated” 😤 Like seriously, how is one wanting to find true love or a woman showing femininity a dated concept? Those are things that still exist today, like I’ve seen and worked with couples around my age (I’m in my late 20s) where the girlfriend/wife expresses how much they love their boyfriend/husband, and I think that’s really sweet of them to show that! If Snow White was “dated” then that means every woman these days would be loveless, soulless, emotionless, empowering robots….and we also wouldn’t be alive if it weren’t for women as well (same with men too 😅). The point is, love is always wanted and needed! ❤️

The people running the company already display a contempt for the “outdated” principles of Walt Disney and seem unable to read audience frustration with what the ”new, improved” Disney corporation is force-feeding children. I don’t doubt that Zegler’s original take was just as crafted as her revised one, with Disney attempting to pitch this film as yet another “empowering” revision that steps away from outdated and old fashioned tropes from the backward days of yore.

There is nothing wrong with "diversity, equality and inclusion". The problem is that Disney thought it was a replacement for "making entertainment and good movies / series". Nowadays women have to be "strong" and "in positions of power", when storytelling 101 tells you that this is a problem. Everyone likes a smart, creative and resourceful woman that uses her strengths to compensate for her weaknesses as a protagonist (same as for male protagonists). But that's not allowed. That their profits are no where to be seen. That’s what they took from this.
We have seen in the last year alone that most "blockbusters” have been failing financially in the box office. (Meaning that they haven’t made 2.5 times the cost of the production).
The last few years alone shows that they THOUGHT there movies would be hits no matter what. So any backlash from the social media wouldn’t have swayed them in the slightest to change anything.
Now we see the results of them having to back pedal after heavy losses of money. And we see the old habits still in play, them not wanting to change anything. Of course we do need to recognize that they already spent the money of this trash fire. They don’t want to spend any more then absolutely necessary. So no new main actors or anything like that.
