I REPAIR EPB MODULE on a Land Rover Discovery 3 / LR3 / RRS for 0$

  • WATCH THIS FIRST - A faulty EPB on the Land Rover Discovery 3 / LR3 / RRS don't have to cost you a lot of money. I managed to fix it for free and with the tools I have in my DIY garage.
    If your HandBrake is sqealing when you use it, then STOP using it and get the handbrake components serviced. It will eventually jam on and unjamming it is not the most fun job to do. If it's already jammend on and you have had to pull the manual release then you have come to the right place because that was what happened to me.
    A new EPB module cost about 750 Pounds / 1000$ not counting the cost of replacing it. So by first watching this video and then trying to unjam it your self you could save your self a lot of money.
    I bought new bolts, backing plate and new plastic gears to have in reserve for when I was suppose to do this job. I did not get the parts in time so no parts was replaced, but I recommend doing so since you are already going under the car and fixing it.

    There is easier way to do it if you are having difficulty accessing it. remove the spare wheel. and sit down inside, remove the metal bracket and rotate it. you can easily remove the whole assembly and do the repair and put it back.

    I have just repaired my 2011 Range Rover Sport with a jammed park brake. Due to a change in the design of the spare wheel carrier, there is zero access to the epb module from the rear. By removing the rear section of the exhaust I was able to get access around and above the differential. The cover faces the front of the vehicle. I hit the bronze nut with a screwdriver and once it was turning used scan tool to unwind it to the latch position.
    Just like you I had a moment of heartache when I tried to apply the handbrake when the job was finished, it came on and then released and showed a message on the dash "handbrake not applied". I did this two more times and then on the fourth try it applied and stayed on.

      @@mcfobossan well thanks for asking. 😊 the L322 is a storry all of its own.. 😅 its been two or three months in the garage this summer. Fixing it myself - same way Simon is doing his... Started easy: Fixing a valve cover leak which turned out to be both gaskets and a crack in the cover. Then I changed all the heater valves and circulation pump. I also discovered lots of rust that on the rear lower sills. So I have used my time to weld that up. At the same time I did compleat rear brakes and handbrake. Fixed some minor PDC issues and fittet a hidden lightbar that turned out nice! 😊 Also done a propper service and leather treatment. But it failed the MOT on Friday due to rust in the rear subframe. (It looks good from the outside but failed the hammer test.) Used parts doesn't seam to be awailable here in Norway and we are looking at half the value of the vehicle for just the parts from UK or the USA. So I haven't decided what to do yet... The other half I've allready spent on the car during the past six months..🙄🌩🧐

    D4 is a bit different, access is more difficult. Need to reverse car on blocks so rear wheels are raised - this gives you more head room to operate. Remove spare wheel. You need to unscrew 2 nuts at top of the EPB backing plate, and 4 bolts at bottom of backing plate. Once you remove the backing plate you need to twist the EPB around so the front faces you. I tried to remove the power cable but struggled so left it connected rather than risk damaging it. I did loosen the cable screw cap by the power cable. Once you get the 8 Torx screws out and lever off the cover you can see the unit. I had to use a hammer and long screwdriver to unjam it and get it started. Then unscrew it all the way until it latches. It is a slow, tedious and frustrating job. Once latched I used an IID tool but no it sure if it did anything. It seemed just activating the brake lever a few times sorted it, it didn’t work the first few trimes and threw the Park Brake Failure code several times. Absolute pain in the butt job but very satisfying to get it going again.

  • @pgiuressi
    @pgiuressi Před rokem +1

    Great video. My question: it seems that what caused the whole problem is the turning part (that one that is spun by the electric motor) was jammed in the side of the box containing the the EPB. So: what if by just unjamming it and then trying to apply the EPB will do it? I mean, Land Rover devised a system that can fail (EPB: we all know that it happens). It happened to me once, generally when applying the EPB while the car is (even slowly) moving backward. I had to pull the cable, and few days later it went back to normal by itself. So what I am saying is: maybe just un-jam it and try?

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  Před rokem

      The turning part jams on when the cables are pulled to long, if the wear on the brake shoes are to much and the mechanism isn't adjusted. When you pull the cable it unlatches, I'm not sure you can get it to latch on by it self in a way when you have unjammed it. I tried different ways, both with and without the IIDtool, but no luck. The only way I got it to latch on again was to wine it all the back and latch it on my self. 🤷‍♂️

  • @frasermckeown5607

    Once you got to the finale stage and latching appears on the iid tool to you select latching to finish it off or just leave it? I had the undefined message and now I have latching.

    Thank you for the excellent and very easy to understand video.
    This is my project for tomorrow.
    Questions:
    Do you adjust your park brake pads before or after this unjam procedure?
    Why not as soon as you first unjam it could you then go and lift the lever as per the dash display message to re-engage the mechanism as in a perfect world if it was not tightly jammed this should be the correct procedure after manual release if you could force the unjam. I note that Disco Mikey instructions also show winding manually all the way to till reconnecting.
    I notice that the dash instructions and what you did is lift the lever to re-engage which confuses me as would this just immediately jam the system again?

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Hey and thank you so much! 👍😊 i would adjust before you reengage the EPB by pulling the lever. So unjam the epb, roll it back and link it up, then adjust before you pull the lever. If that make sense. 🤔 Pulling the lever right away, on mine the system did seem to be able to do that, on the IIDtool it said it couldn’t get the position of the epb so it would do anything, so I guess the system has the same issue, it doesn’t know the position of the epb-screw so it doesn’t do anything. Just my thoughts, no expert here.

    Great video, my 2005 LR3 has a fuel vapor canister between the spare tire housing and the EPB module. Did you encounter this? Looks easy enough to remove. Just curious. Thanks in advance.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  Před 2 lety

      Hey and thank you! 🤗 I can’t recall seeing a the canister but I wasn’t looking. Maybe the Discovery 3 don’t have it but the LR3 does, diesel vs petrol. 🤔 If it’s very visible and in the way I definitely don’t have it. 😊

      @@LandRoverDrive Thank you, so your unjamming procedure worked. Thank you. The original jam was due to completely worn our hand brake shoes which I replaced. However it has rejammed after abut six months. I had to pull the cable at the console to get the brake released. I am assuming I have the new shoes adjusted wrong, thoughts? Was the fix for you long term?

      Which LR do you have? I know the RRS have some differences that makes it really hard to see and hard to get to. I know people then have removed the spare wheel, unbolted the backplate, turn it around to get acces to the module. 👍

    Rather than winding back that bar, bit by bit, could you have unscrewed it from the outside of the EPB, I'm hope I'm making sense, in my head I know what I'm trying to say.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive  Před rokem

      Not sure what you are thinking, need to open it to get access to the mechanism. The screw jams agains the plastic and there is nothing on the outside that would let you screw/unscrew it in any way. 🤔

    • @LandRoverDrive

      Fixed in Norway at the LR garage I'm guessing it would be around 2000$ to 2500$ depending on how long they would estimate the job. The EPB-module alone is about 1500$ from them. I can get the module for about 1000$ from the UK. These a guesses but it would not be cheaper if I was wrong, it would be more expensive... I do my best to share my experiences and tips, I Hope it will help someone out there. :)
