2015 Nissan Leaf Front Lower Control Arm Replacement Ball Joint Failure
First failure after 7 Years of ownership, the Nissan Leaf lower control arm ball joint has failed.
In this video I will be replacing the front right lower control arm, including a new ball joint, and I'm doing it at home in my garage DIY style.
I figured it would be better, easier, and not that more expensive, to change the whole suspension arm as I don't have a bushing press and you really need to press it straight if you were to reuse the control arm. A little of and you would need a new control arm either way.
When you are doing this remember to buy new bolts for the ball joint end, and new bolts for the inner ends if needed. But the outer bolt is definitely needed.
The car would need an wheel alignment after this job. I didn't do that because I thought the left would fail soon. It haven't yet, and I'm still driving with no alignment done and the tires are not getting wearing issues. 😉
I will be looking into changing out the left hand side one and then go for an alignment, finally.
I will try to get some spring clamps that fit and do a bit more research on what is the instruction for doing this job at Nissan.

Why Rotate Tires and What is the OPTIMAL way ?

What is the correct way to rotate your 4x4 tires, or optimal way, if you like, have you ever thought of that? For some reason I haven't done that until last week, as I thought I should rotate my tires this weekend, as next weekend I will be doing another 1000k km round trip. What do you think is the correct, proper or optimal way to rotate your non directional 4x4 AT or MT tires? Let me know in...

    With my BF Goodrich KO2 tyres they get very noisy if you rotate conventionally due to lug stepping. Much quieter if you rotate as a directional tyre but they won’t last as long (though I did get 120,000km out of my last set so can’t complain.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive Před 8 dny

      Hey, that's great info, the noise factor. I went for a test drive yesterday and hour after changing the tires and it felt noisy, but it was raining heavily so could be a factor. I will do a test drive when it drys up and see. After well into the second season with my STmaxx I definitely have noticed more road noice. And on really slow turns, on almost full lock, I can feel the outer lugs really well. Like when backing into my driveway. 120k km is great. I hope to get 60-80k km and then I will be happy. 4 -5 season and 80k km is good I think. The rubber get's old quick after that. The KO2 was the top competitor agains my current setup and will probably be on the top next time. I would love to test out the Nokian Outpost tire just to see how much better it is to drive on longer trips. My winter tires is just a dream to drive with, easy and so smooth. 👌

    • @snorris89
      @snorris89 Před 8 dny

      @@LandRoverDrive I think they will be the new KO3 when you get to look at them. KO2 has issues with sidewall cracking on 60 profiles and less (related to running on lower pressure and sidewalls overheating). KO3 they are trying to reduce this.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive Před 8 dny

      @@snorris89 Yeah, you are probably right. They launched them a while back. I haven't seen them in Norway yet. 60 profile, I think I will go for the same size as I have for winter, 245/70R17, so nice to drive and feels like the car loves them much more as well. They roll easier, they drive true without any tracking. I'm tempted to go up to 245/75R17, which is just at the limit of what I'm allowed to have on my car, but again, the 70 profile is fits much better with the gearing. Only thing is the 70 vs 75 profile has a lower load rating, with the 75 you get 121. But KO3 will be on the top of the list for sure, I haven't really heard anyone having big issue with the KO2, so much be a good tire. :) Need new winter tires first, won't come cheap so hopefully I have good 3-4 seasons on the summers left. 😅

    • @snorris89
      @snorris89 Před 8 dny

      @@LandRoverDrive tyre wall cracking has been an issue in Australia on 265/60r18 which is my size. The r17 sizes would do better as the tyre wall to width ratio is closer. K02 side walls are super strong but that comes with reinforcement that will heat up if flexed so they are sensitive to low tyre pressures at highway speeds. I think the lr recommended pressures are too low for these tyre constructions.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive Před 8 dny

      @@snorris89 Nice info, and I think your tires have it a bit harder than up here in Norway, with the intense heat you see down there and sun exposure over time. When it comes to tire pressure I usually at 40 psi on the summer set, trying to avoid side wall sag as much as possible. It's a heavy car and on the General Grabbers AT2 I had, they got really soft in the end. I guess it will be a bit more noise but the D3 is not noisy at all, so worth it I belive. I feel the STmaxx's has sagged a bit since new, but I guess it is to be expected. Why I try to find the tire with the highest load rating that I can within legal speck. +-5% of original size is the rule in Norway. And Australia, Every Norwegian overlander dreams of driving there.

    For my non directional Duratrac tyres i swap front left to rear right and front right to rear left. I have never introduced my spare into the rotation which I probably should because when I changed brands to the duratracs I now have an unused Cooper Xeon Ltz tyre as my spare, which bugs me because I've never been happy with mxing tyre brands.

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive Před 9 dny

      Yeah, makes sense to do it that way with four, you get a bit of both sides and a bit of front and rear. It’s maybe overkill to do a double cross, but then again, every tire gets all the type of wear. If that makes sense. This set of tires that I have on is my first set to be a complete set of five, so understand where you’re coming from. I had the original 19” underneath the car as a spare for 8 years. 😅 If you can match the size with your spare I wouldn’t bother changing it out, but if it’s far off it might be worth it if you end up using it at some point. Tyres are getting so ridiculously expensive that a spare is what I call luxury item at this point. 😂

    • @lyndonkapoor8823
      @lyndonkapoor8823 Před 9 dny

      @LandRoverDrive yes I agree with what you've done. Makes sense 👌 Luckily the cooper is the same size 255/55 R19. Yes, good tyres are expensive! More so in NZ. I have never had a flat tyre yet and hope not to in the future 🤞 so yes, does seem like a luxury, but is a must have when going remote, even though I carry tyre goo in a can and a tyre plug kit.

      NZ, nice, looks so beautiful there. 😊 And bit better climate than here. And yeah, would want a spare as well. Same size, I would run with that. I haven’t had a puncture yet neither, but I always like to be on the safe side of things. Especially if the family is on board. I would like a spare for winter but as I figured out today making this video, I would need two for rotation to work correctly. 😅 Double expensive. Wouldn’t be a big problem having just one as it would be more than good enough to make it to safety or back home. I probably could use one of my old ones as a spare no problem. 💡😊 You reminded me that I need to get some tire plugs. 👍

      @LandRoverDrive since front wheels are also driven, the inner steel belts get used to that torque load, swapping sides reverses that torque load and weakens the belts causing tire sag and higher wear on outer treads... this is what an old mechanic at the Land Rover dealer in Memphis told me

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive Před 9 dny

      Aaah, thank you for this, that is awesome information, I haven’t thought of that. The inside structural part of the tire could weaken due to the change of torque direction. Hmm, I need to do even more research, and maybe hear what Cooper tires has to say about this. 🤓 I would guess wrong or too low pressure, off-road driving and other stuff would have an impact as well to the internals of the tire, and therefore add to the wear factor of a tire. My tires see mostly tarmac and gravel roads so an even use pattern.

      @@LandRoverDrive 1st: the better profile (tread depth) needs to go to the rear for an improved ability to displace water. Cause the rear axle is what guides the vehicle in its tracks. 2nd: Compare the swap of tires to grating down a piece of Parmigiano: you're turning it, changing sides, to grate it down faster. Right? Now imagine what happens to sawtooth of you change the main rotation direction by swapping them to the other side: wear and noise gets even worse. Hence I retain the sides, but better profile goes to the rear.

    Great video Simon! I am planning to set up a similar installation with 2 batteries on my D3. Can you explain why did you decide for 2 AGM batteries and not AGM + LiFePO4? Thanks! Edit: I just noticed on the other video (part 1) that you are actually using a 3-battery setup: - primary (start) battery - AGM - auxiliary battery - AGM - leisure - lithium So my question is why 3 batteries? Would 2 batteries not be enough? If you are using leisure battery on camping, what is the point of auxiliary battery then?

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive Před 9 dny

      Hey and sorry for the late reply, I saw your initial comment, and now I saw your edit. The 3 battery setup is what I belive to be the optimal setup for remote camping or longer trips. 2 batteries would be enough, but the second AGM battery is a nice backup if your main should fail. Also the aux-battery would help with the load of extra lights and eventually for when I get a winch installed. I'm maybe to far on the "better to be sure than sorry" side of things, so the aux would act as a backup and a booster if needed when it gets really cold. Below -20ºC Does it make sense? :) Simon

      @artur_ziolkowski Před 9 dny

      @@LandRoverDrivethank you Simon. It totally makes sense! Another quick question - do you use a separator between primary and aux battery? I've seen some videos saying that in 3-battery setup, the separator is not needed. Can't wait to see Your video on the setup 😀

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive Před 9 dny

      @@artur_ziolkowski I will use a "smart" relay, that will charge the aux battery when the main is full, but it also has a switch, which you wire up inside your car, so you can link them together when you need to. Say when your main is flat, you are going to winch, or the "smart" relay won't start charging your aux-battery for some reason, like to low voltage. After reading a lot about it I figured it would be the simplest and best option when using the same type of battery. No need for the DCDC charge yet. I will get a DCDC charge at the end of my setup, but I think it will be one of the last components I will put into my system. Solar will come before DCDC, already have it all in the garage, just need to fit and test it out when I get the time. 😅 Are you building up a 12V system your self?

    • @artur_ziolkowski
      @artur_ziolkowski Před 9 dny

      @@LandRoverDrive Yes, I plan to build my own 12v system as well. I also drive a Discovery 3 😁 However I am still on the stage of figuring it all out, from the battery types, all the components and the way I want my system to work. So I appreciate every bit of advice. Thank you! I was thinking about the voltage separator that would cut off the main battery whenever I'm not driving (and charging), so every time I'm on a short stop (keys in), the power is taken from the aux battery. And then when I'm camping (keys out), I'm using the leisure (LiFePO) battery. I understand your leisure battery is not charged while driving or on camping at all at the moment? How big are your batteries? And how long do they last for?

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive Před 9 dny

      Cool, I will share what I know. And I’m still in the middle of my build. Leisure is 100Ah and I charge it at home, it will last for 3-5 days depending on the usages. Mainly I run my cooler box, not compressor drive so less effective, and I charge my batteries. While driving I plug the cooler box into the car and during the night I often just leave the cooler outside because it’s often cold enough outside here in the north. I think I need to do a proper test to see how long I can run the cooler with the battery. But for leisure, with thoughtful use, as described above, 5 days on one charge. We drive a lot on our trips so the cooler box runs on the car most of the time. We’re are you located? I guess in a warmer climate the cooler/fridge would need more power so then I would say 3 days.

    Hi. Is it supposed to have any play it the center bearing at all? They are a lot of videos where people are lifting the propshaft and you can see parts of rubber missing or no rubber at all, but how much play is it when new? I have a Discovery 3 with some vibrations at low rpms when the engine has to work in a high gear, only sometimes, the rubber is cracked and quite some play. From bills from the workshop before i owned the car, it seems like it was replaced 10 years ago and lasted 175 000km. Nice video :)

    • @masha7364
      @masha7364 Před 20 dny

      I actually have a bad cv joint in right front driveshaft/driveaxle so the vibration might be from there. So i should probably just change that one first :D

    • @LandRoverDrive
      @LandRoverDrive Před 20 dny

      10 years is a long time. There shouldn't be any play in a new one, other than the natural play/softness in the rubber. After 10 years it can be the rear UV joint that could be going bad, the notching that I mention. If you get vibration under torque going uphill it could be something to do with the transmission or torque converter, if you have a auto-box. Else, a bad cv could bring some vibrations but not spesific to the engine running at low rpms. Many possible issues that could cause vibrations, so good to start at the cheapest place and that is to check everything before staring replacing stuff. 😊
