Land Rover Discovery 3 - How to level the suspension height

Replacing a height level sensor or wishbone bracket (control arm) results allmost for sure in a missaligned suspension height. The height is normally reset by using a OBDII tool with config function - which nobody has. I show Vera and you in this Video how to get it done with tools everybody has in their basement - or maybe not? Enjoy the video. ,

We were living in a townhouse without a basement and no garage for 9 years too. I still remember this as a great time and we spend even more time traveling. Today we got to fix things around the the house and property all the time. There are pros and cons to everything. Thanks for your feedback.

This might be one of my favorite episodes.
I actually just replaced the air compressor on my RRS, and the entire time I was cursing the LR engineers for putting it in such a stupid location. Now I know it was me who was stupid! Even though I just put it in, that compressor is moving next weekend!!
I love that you fabricated a part that allows you to modify the actual ride height, one which costs around $200.00 USD, and that you provided a quick and easy diagnostic for a bad air shock.
I am starting to think some of these auto manufacturers should go open source, you would be their best contributor!!

Mine is sitting 1/2 inch low on the front right corner. So I figured I could shorten the sensor arm a tad on that corner to make it think it's lower and raise it up a bit. Thanks for confirming this will work. I'm going to use a piece of all thread into the rubber ends to adjust it.

The car will level itself when you first start it up, if it happens to do that on uneven ground it will appear wrong when you drive onto level ground, until it does another re-level. Yes, its not an ideal situation.

  • @noelwhittle7922
    @noelwhittle7922 Před 3 lety

Another consideration: it is possible for these Discoverys and Range Rover Sports to be level but all the work is being done by 2 diagonally opposite air struts, IF, the height calibration is not correct.
The problem with operating with that condition is that the car will never ride as well as it could, the handling will be erratic and unpredictable on bumpy roads and corners, the air compressor will run excessively as it's always trying to level the car, excessive wear on the main load-bearing strut upper and lower suspension bushes, excessive wear on the 2 tyres. Yes, I experienced all of those because someone ( I bought the car secondhand) who didnt have a clue had been fiddling with the calibration settings.
A big part of my career has been to calibrate actuators in industrial applications, and in my case I reset to factory 'mechanical zero' settings and it was fine.

I HAVE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE SUSPENSION.
INITIALLY THE AMBER LIGHT ON THE DASHBOARD WENT ON, THEN IT TURNED THE CAR OFF AND IT WAS SOLVED, I HAD IT SCANNED AND IT RESULTED THAT THERE WERE PROBLEMS WITH THE HEIGHT SENSOR.
FOLLOWING ONE OF YOUR VIDEOS, I HAVE MADE SOME REPLACEMENTS IN THE 04 HEIGHT SENSORS AND I HAVE GIVEN MAINTENANCE TO THE REAR AND FRONT VALVES, AS WELL AS THE MAIN VALVE THAT IS NEXT TO THE COMPRESSOR, ALSO REPLACED ALL OF THEM.

I AM VERY SURE THAT I HAVE CORRECTLY REPLACED ALL THE SPARE PARTS AND ALSO THAT THERE IS NO LEAK IN THE COMPONENTS.
I WANT TO KNOW WHAT THE RED LIGHT SHOULD BE ON AND THAT THE SUSPENSION DOES NOT WORK.
WILL IT BE BECAUSE I HAVE TO "RESET" THE RED WARNING FIRST AND THEN TRY AGAIN ???
    YOUR HELP PLEASE.

    • @Vera_and_Christian
      @Vera_and_Christian  Před 3 lety

Hello Luis, greetings to Peru. This is not easy. Because the light went from yellow (resettable with ignition) to red (non resettable with ignition). I think it is a wiring issue rather than a component issue. You may have fixed the broken component and by touching the wires, you accidentally caused an already poor connection to break.
I think you need to get a diagnostic tool with reset function. Like a Icarsoft I930 or better. It is only 120 US$ and cheaper then most spares.
Then you could read the faults you are getting now and reset them (after writing them down) . If it is a wiring issue, you would need to check the trouble areas of the Discovery 3: Is there corrosion going on in Peru or are you in the high deserts (we are jealous anyhow) ? Do you have a sunroof and then a wet floor on the driver side? Wiring harness above the air compressor frame worn through? Connectors under the front left wheel arch and so on. So I think the diagnostic tool is the next step. I know it is a lot of money but it is better than taking it to a expensive LR dealer.
      Christian from LR Time
Here is a link to a Amazon add for the I930 which I have myself:

      @@Vera_and_Christian Hello,
      Thanks for your prompt response.
I tell you that I am in an area of Peru where the climate is dry, there is no rain.
The lower parts of my LR are very well preserved, free of corrosion, and the connectors are also clean (relatively clean, only with some dust).
Initially there was only the amber signal and the scan only came out the height sensor, but I decided to make more changes at once.
I removed the compressor, cleaned it, removed the air valves and replaced the toroidal seals.
And while doing this, I decided one day to turn on my LR without these components still installed (I did it because it had been almost 15 days without turning it on), and when I turned it on, the light that appeared in amber turned red.
It is possible that having done this (having turned it on without having placed the components yet) has made the computer recognize a major fault and for that reason, now that I have already placed all the components the red light does not disappear and therefore it is necessary scan and diagnose with reset function ??
      Thanks for your help.

I don't have a basement, so that explains why I don't have a Lathe maybe my next house will have one😃

When we were looking for houses, starting almost 15 years ago, workshop/garage space was the main buying criteria. 😅👍🙋‍♀️ Vera

You can program your key easily to raise and lower the car using just the Land Rover button (without the hazards on) 👍

It would be a much better to get a IID tool and calibrate it correctly

Plus 1, made me feel very nervous seeing Christian get under the disco without axle stands, also have a gap iid and indeed extremely easy to set it all up using that tool

Well, I know. But I am very cheap when it comes to parts... Also, who would watch a programing-tool video... Please excuse my doing.

If you leave a door open it will lock its height so wont come down on your hand

@@Vera_and_Christian that is true👍. By the GAP iid tool for your car. Than you can fix everything, and the correct way. By doing it your way is asking for suspension problems. Suc6

Thanks a lot! I think sometimes when the "" Suspension Faut"" alarms occurs is due this misaligmen of the height sensor.
    What do you think?
Note* I have a lathe in my home :)

If the fault resets when you restart the vehicle, it is most likely a secondarry fault caused by an other system. If the fault stays on then it may be a problem with the suspension itself. You need a OBDII tool like the Icarsoft I930.
