    The stereotypical image that pops into the layman's head when they think of Nascar might not illustrate the sophistication on the track. To win in NASCAR, drivers, teams and engineers need to understand race-car physics, especially aerodynamics. Today, we’re gonna breakdown NASCAR drafting, and explain how drivers even use the air itself against their competition.

    I learned drafting as a young kid when we got our racing Go-Karts on the car tracks that were 1/2 mile dirt/clay, if you got out of line you went to the back! My pit guy was an engineer and after adjusting our body kits and plastic cone that deflected air over the steering wheel and leaning our seats as far back as possible to get our body out of the wind! It was fun in the limited modified and open classes because we were up over 100mph! So fun and so frustrating!

American's don't give 2 craps about something quite so dominant. Keep in mind, our sports artificially inflate the number of games in a finals series to last as close to 7 games as possible in NBA and as long as possible in other "American" sports, as well.
      I -enjoy- NASCAR and Indycar 100000000% more than I -enjoy- F1 but F1 is can't miss. I still think Indycar is superior entertainment and F1 is little more than daddy's money vroom vrooming around (sans Lewis, obv, given his background). F1 is about wealth and opportunity whereas NASCAR is about actual talent (in the car provided... I'm not saying a NASCAR driver will outclass an F1 driver in an F1 grid. No sireeee that's not my argument). Hamilton is -not- as superior to his competition as the stats would have us believe. He's superior, but not as superior. Same with Schumi. 6) someone else can actually win.

  • @ShadowWolfe
    @ShadowWolfe Před 2 lety +12

    The side-draft is actually when the front of the passing car gets to the spoiler of the other car for about half a car length. The passing car then moves a lane or two over so they don't get side-drafted themselves - or slow themselves and the car they're passing which is what was visually shown.
    That section could've been worded/shown a bit differently.

    Seeing the front spoiler cam really brings the feeling of just how fast 200mph is. In car cam and you can see just how hard those drivers are working to keep the car on path. Rear bumper is so great, seeing the chasing cars fine adjustments to stay in the draft, like a 500HP giant shark chasing down and chewing up the asphalt. The on track cams, like Jerry said "V-V-V-V-V-V-V-VVVVIPVIPVIP", and the debris flying off the track. That roar as they approach, and then silence after just as quickly. So bloody awesome.

    Lots of good information here!
    One thing that should be noted is how the tandem drafting works. Back in the early 2010s NASCAR had bumpers that lined up better with the Car of Tomorrow and it forced drivers to lock bumpers and tandem draft in order to win at the restrictor plate tracks. This wasn't really "bump drafting" as they weren't bumping, but actually the rear car pushing continuously on the front car.
    The "aero-push" also doesn't come into effect that much on the restrictor plate tracks where tandem drafting exists. The main disadvantage that trailing cars faced was actually overheating because the tandem draft covered the grill opening and caused them to run hot. So drivers would work with one in front and one in back for a few laps and then have to switch going into a corner and then they could hook up and keep tandem drafting. It truly became an art in the early 2010s and being able to time the switch and being able to tandem and switch in the shortest amount of time became a real skill set for drivers.
    Unfortunately when NASCAR introduced the Gen6 car the tandem drafting sort of died out because the bumpers didn't line up as well, and NASCAR implemented rules to forbid locking bumpers, which I personally dislike.

    These forces and effects lead to really interesting racing when I comes to gravity events. I’m a downhill skater and very light so my heavier team mates and I used to strategize during qualifying laps, myself starting in front to give my bigger team mates less drag, while they would use their greater mass and subsequent momentum to keep pushing me in front to act as a wind break and both set significantly faster times
