- In this week's episode of You Can Do This!, we are pitting homemade versus store-bought tortillas chips. While many may roll their eyes and say "Well, of course, homemade fried chips taste better", the question is also, is it more cost-effective? And is the time spent making it actually worth the effort, compared to just grabbing it off the shelf?

Do I spy
A doable recipe?
My local store sells their own fried tortilla chips. Stick em in the oven for a few minutes and they are really good.
I honestly don't understand how anyone could dislike this video, it's showing you how to make good tortilla chips for cheaper, like, what's not to love about that? Unless you don't like tortilla chips, in that case why would you even watch this video?
$5 for a bag LOL
Sometimes even more here in Canada...😔
It's like 6.29 dollars for a 198g pack in India
In Poland it's like 1.35 dollars per 200g pack
he didnt even make the corn tortilla XD he bought it and just fried it
Makes a difference
I'm just here because I had to make tortilla chips after running out and was trying to figure out how to store them. This didn't answer my question, but I agree that the overall taste is better. The thickness of the tortilla compliments the spiciness of salsa, and they can pick up guacamole better. At the moment, making tortilla chips are super beneficial because a lot of leftover tortillas are overflowing my refrigerator, one batch can knock out half a bag. Using the tortillas for multiple dishes and reusing the oil for things like churros makes it more worth it.
I once made homemade tortillas just to make tortilla chips with them. They were pretty good
This is how we did it when i was a kid, except we pan-fried them because we didn't own a deep fryer. Then we'd made queso to go with them and it was always amazing.
down in south Texas you can buy a pack of warm fresh corn tortillas and they only cost $1.25 after a few days you can fry them up and still be in the green
Great Value brand vegetable oil at Walmart, $4.88 for a gallon. If you really want the perfect tortilla chip experience buy some Maseca and make fresh tortillas and deep fry them. Fresh tortillas are super easy to make at home and there are dozens of videos on CZcams.
you can even go one step further, make your own tortillas. 1 bag of Hasa Marina costs about $3. You can make dozens and dozens of tortillas from one bag.
Subbed! Great job!
did this weeks ago....tasty~
It's SO worth it!!
Sorry, but if you're not getting Santitas you are doing it wrong. $0.18 per ounce.
Tylermackenzie do people actually buy Tostitos? That shits expensive yo
A plus to this method I don't see being acknowledged is, if the store bought chips are opened and not eaten within a certain amount of time, they eventually go stale but if you make your own you have more control to regulate quantity and therefore waste less food/money. I understand in America, although being a great country, people are no strangers to gluttony and likely have little need to worry about consuming a bag of chips before it goes bad but this would be beneficial for those of us conditioned to eat smaller portions.
Mex restaurants that use bag chips are crap
Homemade tortilla chips are much better with lime juice as well as the salt
I will try this though I have enjoyed Trader Joe’s Organic Tortilla Chips for many years more than other brands I have tried. I think they are around 3.00 for a pound bag.
Is there any way to make those without the fryer
I make my own tostadas as well as chips. Really ups the game when making chalupas. At costco I can get 100ct pack of Mission corn tortillas for $3.
Fresh chips are the only was I make nachos. Everyone always said it isn't worth but they sure do finish those nachos.
I also like making homemade corn chips because it requires me to have to do some work before I chow down. Otherwise, I could blaze through a whole bag of corn chips in a sitting.
What`s the temperature of your oil?
I usually make my own chips if I have leftover tortillas. I don’t go out of my way. And I bake them with some salt for ease.
Everyone knows Juanita's is where it's at.
acrophobe have you tried Santitas?
I thought there would be a corn tortilla recipe though. Where can I find it?
What kind of oil?
What if you make your own tortillas?
I have made home-made tortilla chips many times. About half the time they come out perfect. The other half they are very hard and chewy. As far as I know, I make them the exact same way every time, but the results vary considerably. It have tried to trace it to the tortillas (white/yellow/blue) or the type of oil, but these factors do not seem to matter.
You can also do this in a pan with oil for everyone that doesn't want to go out and buy a fryer
"5 dollars and 76 dollars" lol
I live in a town like right next to mexico and all the restaurants here have tortilla chips that look like this
The best part about about the bagged factory chips is all the broken pieces in the bottom half. You need a spoon. Ever watch a vendor stack chip bags on the rack? Its a wonder any survive whole. Homemade wins, regardless of cost.
What would be the process for baking them? Thanks
They are much healthier
Do store bought queso vs homemade
Can you make this with an air fryer?
GREAT VIDEO... Ne Subscriber
Now you gotta go down rabbit hole. Make your own tortilla. How much is corn these day?
Great!
before I even start this video. Yes. Homemade tortilla chips, and homemade tortillas them selves are worth it.
You probably want fresher, thicker chips for something like chilaquiles as well.
Ok that was cool but 1 there is one thing is missing how much Electric pay in min so and all total 😁
Bruh, Sanitas tortillas chips are 2 bucks everywhere and I just picked up like 80 tortillas for 2.79 at Safeway.
Khrene Cleaver ok but making ur own chips is also healthier
Hey dude. I have the same deep fryer hey. I have had the same awkwardness of trying to tip stuff out as well. I discovered one night when I was washing it if you pinch the two pieces metal coming out from the handle you can lock the handle in place and actually yip stuff out like a fixed basket.
Who'd of thought hey. I don't think it's mentioned in the instructions either. 🙄
Hope it helps.
I love watching your videos so keep the coming.
Also fffff🔰ck that Hamilton Beach breakfast sandwich maker. 😆
It’s also healthier than storebought
I thought you were gonna make the corn dough, then the tortillas, then the totopos
In case you come across this video 5 years after the fact like me, ditch the salt use TAJIN!
if you add lime and then salt, you'll then have Chipotle's chips.
I thought we were going to make corn tortillas not fry or bake some pre-made stuff
Here in Germany the store bought chips are much cheaper than tortillias :(
Very little of what they do on this show is worth it.
Buying premade corn tortillas and making "home made" tortilla chips. Is like calling Prego spaghetti sauce "home made sauce". Then your math is wrong, since the chips would weigh less after frying.
Keith R it's more like calling the sauce you made homemade sauce when you didn't grow the tomatoes yourself, shameful.
Can you bake tortilla chips?
Celeste Buckway I think at 2:10 he mentions baking saves even more money.
Oil is a big part of the cost, but it can be used many times. Do you think McDonald's changes their oil every day?😂 Of course, they do have sophisticated fryers with filtration systems. I know some home cooks who rarely deep fry, and they just toss the oil after each use, which is very wasteful, and costly. I always strain my used oil through cheesecloth and pour it back into the bottle. The oil does absorb flavors, so I keep three separate bottles for chicken, seafood, and neutral items (fries, tortilla chips, etc.). If you re-use the oil 5-10 times, the cost becomes negligible.
Se llaman totopos en español 👀
weigh the nachos not the tortillas
Nobody has the recipe to the thin cantina style?
should have done the #saltbae
why don't these shows never consider the price of your own time in the equation?
US minimum wage is $7.25.
The whole process is around 10 minutes, so that would mean at least $1.20 for the labor (for the 16 ounces)
Yeah and *my* time's worth way more than that.
finndo Why does the cost of your time matter ? Not like you're selling it afterwards. Most Mexican restaurants hand out chips and salsa for free when you purchase food. So again why does your labor matter ?
They're showing the cost to make chips for yourself at home in your leisure time. I spend money on food and only consider the cost while at the store.
Because people are not working for money 24/7 and need to stop doing that to do anything else.
^ This is still a very reasonable concept to think about. We must all weigh our free time. People have a very bad sense for measuring opportunity cost, just look at Daniel's comment. Is the homemade chip's better taste worth the lose of the 10-15 minutes you used to make them? The real answer is going to be individualized based on factors in that person's life.
We all know fresh ingredients and home made are "better", but we settle for store bought because of the time investment - This is the same thing just drilled down to specifics. For some having good chips is worth the time - some even go further and spend extra time making the tortillas, and that is fine. For many the extra effort of dealing with the frying and all that just isn't worth it when they are perfectly satisfied with store bought.
I would argue that this is not because people value their time, but rather because they are lazy.
This is not something that takes multiple evenings or anything like that.
I mean... what do most people do in their free time? Watching TV?
lol that match :D
corn tortillas?
No, no tortilla chips. This is a Mexican staple known as TOTOPOS, that is it’s real name
you can warm up that bag of pre-made chips...
I bet Jamie Olvier would have a different opinion.. Lol
I’m stoned this looks damn good rn
homemade is always better. no doubts about that
What's your time and the cost of that fryer worth. Not to mention cleanup. Ugh!
Thick chips are not enjoyable to me.... And they often get air bubbles in them. I'd prefer a thin chip, so I make mine from corn Masa flour, salt, and water. Way better
..Just buy them... still good and i’m to lazy 😅
^_______^
It's five dollars and 76 dollars up? Lol. The math if you toss the oil after one batch is $0.52 per ounce, if you do 2 batches, you break even,
Oh no. Endo didn't consider the weight loss or actual chip count or cost of electricity or prep and clean up time or the price of a pinch of salt...😂😂😂
Homemade is always better but also expensive in most ingredient.
Anything with cliff is worth it
no, he's obnoxious and boring.
Your calculations assume your time is worthless. That being said, I am of the position that the increased enjoyment from home fried chips is well worth the small amount of time. The biggest hurdle here is owning a deep fryer
Am I high? Tortilla chips is what? Crispy tortilla bread? Ppl should tell us things more 🤕
I used to take 20 min train ride for these because of the freshness, never knowing that I could fry them at home myself? Unbelievable!
you should make the test with an airfryer....
Take it one step further. Make your own tortillas.
the tortillas would be lighter after frying
ya, but you didn't make the corn tortilla.. rofl..
But getting rid of the oil and cleaning up really isn't worth it though...
jackystone it’s healthier than store bought
so... I was eating tortilla chips and salsa while watching this
Didnt even tell us what temp the oil was smh
fryers are alot of money though
use your pan then. Easy.
thats just a waste of oil
I try to avoid deep frying at home as much as possible. its baaaaaaad for your lungs.
You don't say what temp.
just buy a packet of doritos, taste better than both
Sorry but the cost of oil and my time makes it so I'll just buy a bag of chips. But if you want to make me chips I'm all for it.
and electricity
Eater, there's a problem with your youtube account. I tried going to your channel home page and it keeps throwing up an error. Like, I literally can't check out what videos you have uploaded in the past.
Like, going to www()youtube()com/user/eater1 gives "an error has occured".
Try going to: czcams.com/users/eater
just bake them.
Thanks! I've always wondered this. My favorite Mexican restaurants always make their own chips and I assumed because it was way cheaper than buying them in a bag.
Right, but that's a restaurant that's making tortillas already. Here, he's buying tortillas
Michael - some of them buy tortillas and some that are great make their own. I used to work at a fast food stand and they bought the tortillas but made the chips.
Let's factor in the cost of my time and energy here too. Set up the deep fryer (assuming I have one), 2 quarts of oil, bring it up to temp, about 10 minutes cook time - not a big deal there - but then I've got filter the oil of any solids, pour it back into containers for storage, and clean the sheet pan you rested them over, the grate you rested them on, and the entire deep fryer.
I love me some good homemade chips, but that's 20 to 30 minutes of work to save me 2 bucks.
But you buy the tortillas
Something something something create the universe
its not homemade, you just purchased corn chips and fried them
Balls in yo mouth "that sauce isn't home made, you just bought tomatoes and cooked them hurr durr"
Rob Mckennie tomato's come fresh, tortillas are made from corn, flour, etc and are preproduced
Right, your complaint is that he bought something that was processed, rather than buying it as fresh raw ingredients, exactly as they were when they came off the plant? Would you say that bread isn't home made unless you ground the flour yourself?
How do you even make tortillas?
$5 for for bag of chip...lol really?
Where did he find tortia chips for 5$. Around here they are all 5$ for 2 two pound bags. Shopping skills have to sux.
Who the hell has the time there gone in 10 seconds.. just buy a premium brand if you want better taste
not homemade!
I still don't get why you people use those nasty yellow tortilla knock offs...
