    Thanks for the tutorial Billy. This just helped me solve the same issue with my 74’ chopper with 4 speed gear box. I have tried to adjust the clutch several times with no great success. Checked it out last night…same issue. Big pain in the $&@ when bike is kick only.

    I just found this channel. Is this the same dude that was on the Discovery channel 3-4 million years ago? I grew up watching all those motorcycle shows as a teen, and have been riding since I was 17. If this is the same dude, he's one of those guys that inspired me to do it. Pretty cool.

    Thank you, Billy. I always focused on the condition/cleanliness of the friction plates and steels. But I never even thought to look at the retainer ring. Also, widening the holes--excellent! Thanks again for sharing your skills.

    you remind me a lot like jessie james.. you both have the same temperament when it comes to bikes and people and you both share the history of others who inspire you like Indian Larry and what they and the things they stood for.. both of you were back then my most favourite to watch build bikes and in todays world you guys are like watching my father in the garage teaching me as a child how to fix and build things.. i dont know how life is now but i wish you the very best in everything you do and its touching to know you haven't forgotten Indian Larry and still mention him as i know he means a lot to you but most others keep that hidden or just forget but when your open its tells something about you.. you are a great man billy lane and never forget that 👍

    Great video Mr. Lane. Keep up the great work. Ya know, I waited in line about an hour once at the Easy Rider bike show in Charlotte, N.C. for a chance to shake your hand. And all the while I was in line, thinking of all the cool things I was gonna talk to you about. Once I finally made it up to you, I couldn't think of a darn thing to say (lol). I'm 10 years and 1 month older than you yet, I was completely at awe while in your presence. Your a good dude brother. I wish nothing but the very best for you and yours.

      @@BillyLaneChoppers Hey, you're right on the money. I had just recently bought my brand new 2003 Fatboy 100th anniversary. The same bike I'm still riding to this day. I have recently just finished a life long dream of building a true 1970's chopper. It's a 1973 ironhead xlh. Started with a rigid Paughco frame. If I knew how to send you a picture, I would. It doesn't compare to your builds but, I'm pretty proud of my accomplishment.

    Billy man I've been there trying to make those old shovels hook up with the 4 speed clutch diaphram clutch for a 4 speed has been the greatest thing I've ever done for a shovel. Love the videos I love how far you've come from bottom keep it up man good seeing that amazing talent no going to waste as so many of us have witnessed and lived through amazing job!

      90% percent of the time the primary belt or chain is too tite & the spring measurement is wrong so it walk out ! bid doing just as long as him lol

    Those 3 fingers suck, especially if you lose the threads on one, when on a weekend chopper run... I been using the 5 fingers with the big fix bearing kits and they now have that plastic adaptor for 5 fingers . Good tech tip on drilling out the holes!

    Amen ; I have same stuff in my 74” 74’ . Not so functional. I think it’s the idler on belt . Clutch basket doesn’t stay centered when disengaged . ✊🏻👍👌

    Billy... what lowering shocks did you put on? What length?
    I have Progressives. I forget the length. Maybe 10.5". I've had them since the 90s.
    It made the geometry different as the swing arm is not parallel to the ground. And made it hard as gell on my already screwed up old back.
    I thought the "Progressive" shocks would be Progressive. But the ones I got arent.. they are just harder so you don't bottom out.. I think it rides harder than a rigid over a lot of small bumps because the spring is amplifying it.

    Something an old timer told me back in the 70s was to take the friction plates and scrape them around in circles on the concrete before putting them back. Don't know if that's old wives tale.
    For a while I had "racing" plates in there. They chirped and squeeled and locked up in a second. I ended up taking them out and putting stock plates in.

    It was so good that they did away with dual belt drives. They also had to design a custom "cowpie" transmission to make it all work. They also go their asses kicked in trying to figure out how to put more tension on the primary belt 🤪

      All those friction plates need to float freely, & the clutch basket needs to stay inboard. Do these things & it will clutch like an EVO 5-speed

    The Chopper guys like Rear chains because they can be replaced easily on the side of the Road. Any Tractor Supply or Farm store carries #50chain in bulk. While it might not last as long as an o ring chain but will get you moving if out on a long ride. Keep the clean side up. Thanks Brother

      When I re-wired my '78 Shovel I used the wiring diagram in one of the old Easy Riders Tech Tips books (either #1 or #2, #3 is more oriented toward Evos). The diagram is very basic: just what you need to run the engine, headlight, brake and taillights. I can't remember if it included starter wiring, but I am fairly certain it did not show turn signals.

    Is there any venting for that belt primary? My '80 FLHS is original belt primary with chain final. It was swapped to 1.5" BDL to eliminate the rubber damped compensator. I'm thinking I should vent it.

    Hey bro, could I possibly talk you into doing a video on your personal choice of oil(s) for these early 1970's bikes and your opinion why ? Would be greatly appreciated. I know that Harley called for straight 50 weight conventional oil for my old xlh. But then again, there were no multi weight oil back then, much less synthetic. Lol

    Those Troublelhead clutch baskets were such garbage. I went through about 4 of them things when I owned my Troublehead. I can honestly say I don't miss that turd. I put well over 100k miles on it, and the cost of ownership equally equated to its mileage at $1 per mile. LOL
    Constantly threw money at it.

    And keep some extra snap rings for the clutch hub retainer for when servicing you clutch hub. It's sometimes easier to destroy the old ones when removing them than trying to finesse them out unscathed.
    Your snap ring pliers will also need to have very small pins to fit the holes in the clips but two picks work OK to get them out. Nothing hard about it really, you're just working in kinda tight quarters.

      It’s odd…sometimes the videos I think are best- and that I believe will be most helpful- just don’t perform as well as you’d think. It doesn’t discourage me, though, I just keep working & posting what I do. Thanks for sharing
