My grandpa worked as a machinist from 1941 to 1971.he made parts for aircraft used in WWII. You made me think of him.

These videos are SO good. Not a stupid tv show with the bs made up drama, all the good, interesting, bits cut out to make room for the utter garbage the producers and tv show morons insist on. Just billy having the time to actually explain what he's doing and show all the stuff us real gear heads, custom build enthusiasts etc actually want to see and learn about.

Those lathes are nice. I used one as a tool & die machinist for yrs. I was born and raised in South bend, IN, 40 yrs right down the street from
Notre Dame, and 5 yrs I moved to the Smoky Mountains. My grandfather worked at Studebaker until opening up his own HVAC.
Extraordinary and concise, his ability to explain the idiosyncratic nuances are second to none.
I watched several of your videos until it got very late, then I got up in the morning and watched several more. Your videos are, seriously, the best motorcycle related videos on youtube. I really like the detailed information and how you go in depth on the operation of the lathe and the mill. Extremely informative and entertaining. Please never stop making these videos.

Nice. This is what I liked in the early Biker Build Off videos, and more so in the first Motorcycle Mania video, watching how things were actually made. Only drawback, I spend too much time watching machining videos, and not enough time making stuff in my own shop.

Really enjoyed seeing the old Bridgeport,SouthBend & Cincinnati still @ work.I was a sheet metal fabricator, we had to use these mostly for sharpening our tools.That shifter is going to b around for a long time.

I learned to use a South Bend when I was in gunsmithing school. It's still by far my favorite 30+ years later.
I made the fateful mistake of stripping my softail down to its bones just before I lost my job. I couldn't believe how much it had deteriorated. Its now been off the road for two years now. I'm nearly there, but am now at that expensive stage of trying to buy oil, gaskets etc. Oh well, i'll get there eventually. What I love about your video's is the great tips and the way you explain what your doing. Its very inspiring.I do want to put a six speed in mine some time down the road too, so I can't wait to see you do that to your's. great content. Cheer's from old England.
It would be nice if we could figure out how to raise money to put up a building where you could teach adults and the youth how to build their own custom bikes.. you definitely are one of those people who have alot of knowledge and are great at having the patience and ability to teach others

CNC machined parts are all well and good, but handmade ones have a soul... when looking at a custom bike, you can tell which ones have a soul right away. Amazing work, Billy!
This is certainly not a cost effective way to work. I can see why these parts are so expensive now. And well worth it.

Southbend made some awesome machine tools! Have ran MANY older non-CNC mills, lathes, surface grinders, horizontal turret mills, etc. Keep 'em clean and oil the ways etc and they'll last more than one lifetime! Appreciate the vids brother!
spent my teens and 20s in machine shop loved it but moved on to plumbing and construction lost all my machinist tools built aircraft parts little shops all through so ca built for the big manufactures 1 man shops 5 ,10 , 30 were common I dont even know anyone in that buisness anymore The Guy from Clkassic work has some pretty good skill too!

Thanks for sharing this info for manual lathe operation. I'm a 24yr skilled welder fabricator that is just getting into manual lathe and mill out of necessity for scratch parts as well. You explain well and have a great aptitude for teaching. It's a bonus seeing a custom part in progress rather than just a random piece of stock being demonstrated.

A good friend of mine has a Billy Lane chopper. Behind SBB, in MI, SC. The machining and everything is nicely done even the pinstriping under the fuel tank is a nice touch.
Love the videos. Been a fan for years. I have a recommendation. Install disc brake on the lathe so you stop touching the spinning chuck.

Very cool! I was at bike week about 20 years ago and stopped by your booth. You were not there. They said you were out riding. I thought it was pretty cool. I hoped to come back to meet you but i had to ride to key west.
I had to stop riding due to back issues about 15 years ago but i'm doing better now.
I'm really glad i found your channel here. Hopefully picking up an abandoned 07' road king that has been off the road since 2013.
