The Poachers Pipeline l Al Jazeera Investigations

  • An Al Jazeera undercover team penetrated the network of dealers, agents and traffickers who profit from the multi-million dollar trade in Rhino horn. An illegal business that is decimating the Rhino population close to the point of extinction.
    Our reporters discovered that members of the Chinese President’s delegation went on an illegal spending spree in South Africa to buy ivory and rhino horn and smuggled the products back to China, according to revelations to be broadcast by Al Jazeera’s Investigative Unit.
    In a six-month long investigation the Al Jazeera team also filmed a Chinese businessman, based in South Africa, describing his dealings in rhino horn and how he escapes prosecution. “Everything in Africa is based on money”, he says.
    Al Jazeera shows exclusive footage shot secretly in a village near the Vietnamese capitol, Hanoi, which is a hub of wildlife trafficking. Despite a massive dossier of evidence on over fifty dealers in the village selling horn, ivory, tiger skins and lion bones, to the Vietnamese Government, no official action has been taken to close down the trade.
    About twenty five thousand rhino are left in Africa. Six thousand have been killed in the last decade. The largest concentration of rhino is in South Africa and the Kruger National Park has become the major killing field, with two or three animals shot every night by local poachers.

    We live in a time in America when, in order to get real news and insights, you have to go to foreign media, including, yes, even Russia TV and Al-Jazeera. The tragedy of poaching is off limits to US media because it involves two PC taboos: extreme corruption in Africa (especially in post-Mandela's So. Africa) and the barbarity of East Asian cultures.

    • @chaole1000
      @chaole1000 Před 7 lety +7

      Andrzej Olszewski I don't think so. American news coverage mainly focuses on domestic issues and any worldly news that affects US interests. That's the reason why I resort to aljazeera or BBC since US lacks coverage on international issues. It's not because of PC culture.

    • @BitchChocker
      @BitchChocker Před 7 lety +3

      people talk about government and the middle man ... in reality the main source is wirh the animals and the poachers as if you track the animals with radio collars and having a remote control plane with infrared capabilities as long is been tracked properly you easily see who is tracking animal to kill and they can be cut during, before, or after. meanwhile you already have a record of whom was in the area at that time ... and if you ask about government funding tou and I know is that if a fundme, paypal, pateion, etc can be set to donate for the cost. they need the guidance to follow option even if the government looks the other way.
      the very same people who made this documentary can easily start a program to supply drones to the ones that care.

    The problem is the final consumers aren't afraid and won't
    experience consequences for thir actions, Nor will the Asian
    crime syndicates. The chain needs to be tackled from the
    poachers to the consumers. If the last rhino is poached, I
    will never go back anywhere in Africa, because there would
    be no point to a safari, and other animals won't do it for me.
    I am already boicotting Asian productr as well
