  • Criminal gangs backed by wealthy foreign investors are making poaching big business in Africa.
    British soldiers are hoping to tackle the issue by helping rangers trying to save elephants and rhinos in Malawi.
    Radio 1 Newsbeat reporter James Waterhouse travelled to the country to join bush patrols as they look to stop a practice which has long threatened many species across the continent.

    I am a proud member of the South African Anti Poaching Unit based in KZN. I've been helping to end Poaching since September last year, and I have to say everyone can help. We seriously need all the help we can get, there are volunteer programmers around such as Protrack which will allow people to volunteer with the Unit. You don't get paid but you will be doing a good cause. Please everyone who can help is welcome, we really need it, thanks x.

      I have a question for you.
      I have previous professional military experience including conflict zone deployment, and wish to make good use of it doing anti poaching work.
      Please answer this:
      - As a European (no citizenship in any African nation), what organisations can I join?
      - The ProTrack alternative in South Africa - I read as a volunteer you are not allowed a firearm? (I'm concerned with that because of self-defense if confronted with armed poachers).

    • @mitchellweidemann1618
      @mitchellweidemann1618 Před 5 lety +4

      An Ha the fact that you are a European citizen makes things a bit complicated. I started as a volunteer at protrack and worked my way into the full time job over time. However I'm not sure if it would work for European citizens. I would suggest you still give the volunteer programme a try and then maybe speak to some of the guys there about becoming a full time member.

    Video old but right now real time. a poacher was trampled on by a elephant and eaten by lions in Africa. Second time poachers have gotten what they deserve. 6 months ago, pride of lions on a private game reserve that had protected rhinos ate a bunch of poachers. They just found pieces of the bodies. The animals are there and protecting the rhinos. The elephant heard and saw the poacher and hunted him and stomped on his ass. That elephant could have had history with poachers. He knew that dude was up to no good and needed to be stopped

    Excellent move by the Park authorities to involve the British army in training the frontline staff's in warfare. In most of the countries where wildlife Park's exist especially in the South African continent and in Asia also Siberia forest departments are not well equipped or trained in tactical warfare which not only boost their morale but also keeps them a step ahead of the poachers. Nepal is a shining example of brilliant conservation, their Wildlife Park's are protected by the Army and the villages around the periphery gets a big chunk of monetary benefit from wildlife tourism. And the South Asian countries like China, Vietnam and Thailand have to put a complete ban on the usage of wildlife parts. Also they should incorporate the significance of wildlife in their education system and phase out their age old beliefs in medicinal properties from wild animal parts.

    I have a lot of respect for the British Army and wish to join myself. However after spending time with an anti-poaching training academy in SA I can see that the training that the British army provides is likely limited to things such as first aid. The way in which an anti poaching ranger must operate in the field is nuanced, subtle and quite different to those skills and tactics that a modern army trains it's troops in. I think the above footage displays quite well that this is, perhaps, more of a training exercise that benefits the British soldier over than the ranger. Despite this, its a fantastic thing to collaborate and learn from one another and adding much needed boots on the ground.

    • @lmc5955
      @lmc5955 Před 2 lety +1

      Well yeah it’s most likely training but I think British troops like any western military would be more than capable of anti poaching, troops are trained in all sorts of environments and conditions, there is a reason the British army is training them, it’s because they themselves know how to do it, it wouldn’t make sense to have a military that didn’t know how to do a job but then train others on it

    • @boomer6611
      @boomer6611 Před 2 lety

      Have you joined the British Army yet Harry? There are a myriad of things the Military brings besides First Aid. Communications; small capable handheld equipment and base stations are critical. Intelligence capabilities to track networks; Strategies for winning the hearts and minds of the people who know who the poachers are. UAVs to fly reconnaissance missions and, of course, the smaller things like hiring drivers and fixers in the local communities during their deployment. Although I commend your time spent with the anti-poaching academy, I believe your comments are based on limited exposure to the British Army's light infantry capabilities in terms of patrolling (navigation, communication, stalking, camouflage, observation, terrain analysis). I think units like the Rifles, Paras or the Commandos are where a young man who is looking for an adventurous youth are the best option. Good Luck.

    Poaching is part of our political economy problem, people poach to survive. If you cannot stop the root cause of poaching let people do what they can to survive, even rangers understand this but cannot say it for fear of losing their jobs. In other places conflict with wildlife justifies poaching, you dont expect victims of elephants to love them, the tusk is just a bonus.
    Maybe these African counties will develop in future so that its people at grassroot level start to love and appreciate wild animals like westerners but until that happens there will be no more elephants and rhinos just like there is no much wildlife in developed countries.

    Can we not also cut this problem off where it begins? If big business could invest in the area, create jobs that pay. Steve Jobs said you have to make it easier for people to do the right thing, than to do the wrong thing. If people live comfortably doing the right thing, there won’t be poachers… well, there will be less of them for you to arrest, and more animals that won’t be hunted.

    I wonder if they have drones. They could very easily scout a lot of ground in just minutes, and that would scare off any poachers.

    Stopping poaching goes beyond chasing them down with guns, that won’t stop poaching and in fact that makes it more lucrative for poachers.

    Problem is not small people who hunt to survive infortunately . This is the government's who not provide sustenance to this people . The same governments who broke all the rools and hunt themselves , ofer hunting parties to the rich or royalty . I remember the king of Spain f ex who was some kind of animal protector but was frequently hunting on Africa . This is the big problem

    Apparently early civilization royalty was buried with ivory trinkets, doo dats, and spears. I can understand crafting weapons, I mean the wooly mammoth's tusks were weaponized for hunters back in the day. But to kill animals solely for arts and crafts is beyond ridiculous and dare I say pathetic. You can settle for a bit of wood you actually have to go and pay to have an animal killed just to have a miniature statue of a naked Buddha lying around? What the fuck man!?

    Hunting will never stop if those people live in filthy poverty. People have to factor the poverty found in that part of the world. On the long term, there needs to be an economic solution that will benefit the majority.
