It's January 2, 2023. The BeeGees have proven to all their naysayers just how talented they are ,not only as a brother singing trio, but song writers as well. They deserve every award they have ever gotten and more . The only other brother trio that I know of is the Jonas Brothers and there is NO comparison. Even the Beatles didn't have the longevity that the Bee Gees have had . A lot of the younger generation only know them from Staying Alive etc. I only hope they go back to ground zero and see how the BeeGees evolved through the years. Even though the music 🎶🎶 industry wrote them off after the whole death of Disco thing came about the Bee Gees outsmarted them again and again.

Massachusetts (67) was their first #1 song in the UK (it peaked at #11 on the US charts).
Just a simple song (lyrically) with a wonderful melody, signature harmonies, and Robin’s beautiful ethereal vibrato.

Robin was said by peers (like Elton John and Brian May) and critics at the time to be "The best white soul voice of his generation". Most people equate the Bee Gees with disco (which they considered R&B) and the falsetto (which all three could do) but their earliest hits were often ballads and written or cowritten and sung by Robin (he cowrote most Bee Gees songs). He also played piano, organ and guitar but very seldom on stage, just to compose. His vibrato and range from low baritone to high tenor was amazing. He could also do country (Road to Alaska), pop (Juliet, Boys do fall in love), soul (Bodyguard, Oh Darling), rock (She keeps on coming) and even show tunes. He did an amazing version of "Somewhere" from West Side Story at only sixteen and his voice in that hit bass at times. He was pushed more to the background during the "disco" era which ironically, while making them tons of money, almost destroyed their career because they became so popular (5 songs in the top 10 and the top album at the same time) and there was a backlash. They couldn't get airplay in the US to save their lives although they had hits in Europe and Robin had solo hits abroad. As a result they took a break from their own stuff and wrote and produced for people like Kenny Rogers/Dolly Parton (Islands in the Stream), Dion Warwick (Heartbreaker), Barbra Streisand (Guilty, Woman in love), Celine Dion (Immortality) and Diana Ross (Chain Reaction) producing some of the biggest albums those people had! As far as vocal ability, I would take Robin any day plus he was an eccentric personality and very intelligent oddball! Robin also had a biting wit at ease with one liners, was an historian, President of the British Heritage Society that designates historic sites, President of the songwriters organization where he fought for and won fair compensation for composers, worked for "Outreach" that gave at risk young people opportunities, spoke at the EU and to Parliament on behalf of veterans and refugees, lead the charge to have the Bomber Command Memorial (honoring the bomber crews of WW2) built in London (unveiled by the Queen a month after he died), wrote The Titanic Requiem (an orchestral piece commemorating the 100th anniversary of the disaster). He was listed for a knighthood but died before it was approved.
Can you tell I was a fan, LOL?
Maurice was also underappreciated as the peace keeper, by far the best musician, and a great singer who always found the perfect third harmony and was their band leader.
I know you do a lot of Queen who I also love but while Queen are expert musicians and showmen, The Bee Gees were THE harmonizers of the era and exemplary composers and arrangers. There is certainly room to love both.

    • @susieq9801
      @susieq9801 Před 3 lety +7

PS - The back story is commenting on the 60's "hippy" era where everyone wanted to go to San Francisco, Haight Asbury, to get in on "the scene" but then missed home and wanted to go back. They had never been to Massachusetts when they wrote the song.

Most of their earliest singles/hits were written by Barry…..with some written also with Robin &/or Maurice. Let’s please be honest…..most weren’t sung by Robin, but often by Barry or co-lead between the 2 of them.
Also, Robin was President of the U.K. based Heritage Foundation, which honours figures in British culture…..but don’t believe he was ever President of the British Heritage Society, designating historic sites.

You hit the nail straight on its head - these three Musical Geniuses were a once in a lifetime occurrence - and I feel fortunate to have experienced them in real time...💖💖💖
Their harmonies so incredibly tight, being born and raised by parents who were both musically talented - Dad a drummer, with his own big band orchestra, and Mom a vocalist in another band.
Their older sister, Ms Lesley Evans (who lives with her family in Australia, and is two years older than Sir Barry Gibb...) is just as musically talented - she actually performed with her brothers on several occasions, back in the day.

Hello and thank for this reaction
"Massachusetts" was their first #1 in UK Official Charts 1967
(the year of Sgt Pepper by BEATLES)
This is the earliest Bee Gees, with beautiful ballad pop like this
"Massachusetts" is so simply but so beautiful too, and Robin shine with his voice and sensitive feeling
in my Top 5 of all BEE GEES songs:
    Massachusetts (1967)
    Lamplight (1969)
    My world (1972)
    Mr Natural (1974)
    Nights on Broadway (1975)
In your other video I request one of the most underrated Bee Gees songs
and in this I request to the other most underrated song:
    "Mr Natural"
if you like "Fanny (be tender with my love)", I hope that enjoy with this song just a year before, the song (and album) in wich Bee Gees change your music style
    GOD bless you
    Best regards from Argentina

Robin and also Barry did so many good lead-vocals! And always the chorusses with their brilliant three-part-harmony, gets me excited. Unbeatable perfection! And if you listen well, you can hear Barry singing first voice and lil dominatin' the chorusses with his powerful voice, Robin doin' the second voice, not an easy thing, so he's done first voice in the verses. And then Maurice, excellent third voice, always having the absolute musically hearing. Doesn't get better. Not brothers, but maybe equal are Crosby, Stills and Nash on songs like 'Helplessly Hoping' or 'Marrakesh Express'. Thinkya should check them out, too. Think a must forya to check out would be a song called 'Blue Island', out of Bee Gees-album Size Isn't Everything'. On YT to find is a liveversion on MTV-Most Wanted. That's thrilling and just like outa this world.

This particular song was associated at the time with the Hippie movement, the Flower Power banner, and it was also associated with Scott McKenzie's song "San Francisco". One thing I will add: "Massachusetts" was more popular in non-native english countries than it was in the UK, US or even Australia. The ending of the song was changed in this concert.

Although the Bee Gees themselves viewed it as something of a contrast to the Summer of Love goi g on in San Francisco ( hence the reference) in that it was about heading away from that scene back to home. Massachusetts was the locale for no other reason than they liked the way Robin sounded saying "Massachusetts".

    Band of brothers?
No one is quite like the BeeGees.
Wilson-Phillips are probably the closet with 2 daughters of Beach Boys’ Brian Wilson, and the daughter of Mamas and Papas’ John and Michelle Phillips. They are known for their harmonies. As were the three brothers in The Beach Boys.
New bands of siblings that come to mind are
    Greta Van Fleet (3 brothers + 1)
    The Warning (3 sisters)
    Larkin Poe (2 sisters)
Halestorm includes a brother and sister.
    Haim is 3 sisters.
Kings of Leon is 3 brothers and a cousin.
The Chicks are 2 sisters plus Natalie.
From classic rock, Heart with Ann & Nancy Wilson are the first sisters that come to mind. Then the Pointer Sisters. Further back, the Andrews Sisters.
On the brother side, it’s seems it’s often two brothers that start a band.
Van Halen, Nickelback, Stone Temple Pilots, AC/DC, Pantera, Radiohead, Allman Brothers, Bachman-Turner Overdrive, and even Styx.
And then there are the family groups, The Jackson 5 and The Osmonds.
    Too many.
But Beach Boys are probably the closest.

Only complaint I have about this song is; it's too short. It ends too quickly. Other than that it's perfection! Good reaction and comments

Been recording since 1958 through the 2000’s. They are legions. This was their take on the end of the hippy movement where everyone was heading to San Francisco….was telling them they should be going home.

Another group that were brothers (and a cousin and a couple of others) were the Beach Boys. Tremendous songs and harmonies. But yes Bee Gees were one of a kind.

They liked the word Massachussetts - they said so in an interview.

To be fair there has been groups of brothers out there. The Mills Brothers, The Everly Brothers, Beach Boys with the Wilsons, The Jonas Brother, The Bellamy Brothers, The Osmonds, The Jackson 5 and possibly many more. But The Bee Gees survived the test of time and was active for nearly 50 years (1958 to 2001)

You can’t compare The Bee Gees to anyone, but if you don’t know the Everly Brothers from the 60’s, check them out. They inspired many bands of the 60’s & 70’s with their acoustic guitars & harmonies. Give a listen to “All I Have To Do is Dream”. Check them out & then get back to The Bee Gees! You have SO many more to go.

Absolutely my favorite song of theirs. Plus Robin has always had a better voice than Barry for me. No need to call me out anyone........I’ve always felt he was a better vocalist than Barry!!
