When Ryan mentioned the movie "Grease" and then a few minutes later said that he had never heard of/seen Olivia Newton John 😂😂
Yeah that was a face palm moment
I literally came here to say that 😂😂
I'm yelling grease, and the kids are wondering what's happening LOL
Yicks! Literally thought everyone over a certain age knew her because of Grease! Hahah
@@GregM0577Likewise
Not to have ‘The Angels’ all over that Clip is absolutely criminal, at one stage through the 80s they were bigger in Oz than Label mates AC/DC. They’re an Iconic band from the Era. Also Nothing by ‘The Church’ or ‘The Radiators’, either, who were all over the 80s.
Am I ever gonna see your face again?! - you fill in the response phrase here 😂😂😂
No way get F’d F off
@@belindaweber7999 No way, get f#cked, f#ck off 😂🤣
Those were the days, when we all had fun, without the bs of violence and drugs
And hunters and collectors, so many good bands and artists were missed for a lot of Kylie and Jason who weren't that big here and did better in Europe.
@@belindaweber7999 I tried but kept getting deleted lmao. Comment sections in all socials are racist against aussie language lol
As an Australian who grew up in the eighties, I was singing along to (nearly) all of these songs. 😁. Love them ❤❤❤
The only ones I didn't know the words to was Jason Donovan. He was big as an actor in Neighbours, then went to London where we never really heard of him again.
The rest...ICONIC Australian LEGENDS!!❤❤ 🇦🇺
Me too!! ❤️
Dragon, Split Enz, and the founding half of Crowded House are New Zealand legends. You have enough iconic bands, you can't go claiming ours too! (obviously I'm joking and playing off the trans-Tasman rivalry)
Jason Donavan, not missing much lol
"Australia's Justin Bieber" (of the 80s) is pretty bang on, though. :D
I just saw Jason Donovan in The Rocky Horror Show in Sydney!
Remember the days when Aussies pioneered pub rock and we were in hot demand at one point AC/DC, Midnight oil, INXS, Australian Crawl, cold chisel, ice house, crowded house the fkn list goes on and on
i saw all of them at my local pubs, cost only a few bucks to get in, drinks were cheap, crowds were probably a couple of hundred if that, no trouble and you'd most likely end up with a "friend" until the sunrise.
And you could sit just a few feet away from these awesome musicians. No security guards or fences either.
I still remember a few pubs you could still get great bands at and that whole great easy vibe well into the 00's but then suddenly nothing. That era was over. Now they have terrible music and I guess bands who have truly great talent have nowhere to make a start
@@susie9893 Yes, no good pub venues for bands to play these days. If a band does play in such a setting it'd most likely be in a "Tavern" that allows children, the music'd be rubbish and people would be having their lunch or playing the pokies. Anyway, if there was a good pub to watch a great band of a night time my guess the patrons would be misbehaving, high on pills and not really there for the music but to be seen..
@@TheHandymanQld although, I'm speaking for the Sydney scene. I believe the old pub scene held on longer in other places - so maybe there are still some hold out places somewhere 🤞🤞
As an Australian, I am slightly embarrassed that we have claimed some New Zealand bands & artists as Aussies. Dragon is a Kiwi band as was Split Enz. As Split Enz morphed in Crowded House it became an ANZAC band with a mixture of Kiwis & Aussies. Both Australia & New Zealand punch above their weight in both music & acting given our small populations.
Na the video clearly states Australian and New Zealand right at the beginning
@@vtbn53 Meh, anything from New Zealand that does well is naturally Australian. When it fails, we give it back, Split Enz, The Swingers, Russell Crowe. Dragon. Hell, we'd claim the All Blacks if we didn't keep beating them.
Yeah so what, Jimmy Barnes was Scottish and so was AC/DC’s Bon Scott, but they were in total legends…..except Jason Donovan 🤣🤣🤣
@@geoffkeeys6946 😅
@@mickcain2203 Barnsey and Bon, total legends, thus Australian. Jason Donovan, a bad actor who couldn't sing who got a free ride on Kylie's coattails.
Nobody listened to Jason Donovan, so I cant believe he made the list even once, let alone so often.
I did 😂....I was young 😂😂
Same
As I mentioned elsewhere, I'm pretty sure this list is based more on artists who were popular overseas, like US & UK. He was huge in the UK. Even so, yes, too many mentions.
He was on German television a lot.
He was like sprouts. Bland, tasteless, and shoved down your throat. He rode on Minogue's coat-tails from their relationship on Neighbours.
My Dad and I were once in a steakhouse (parrilla) in Buenos Aires. Our waiter asked us where we were from. I said Australia and he tells us to wait. A few moments later he reappears wearing an AC/DC t-shirt over his uniform.
I thought he was going to say "I'll make you a Vegemite sandwich!"
One of their biggest concerts was in Argentina
Another three honorable mentions that are iconic and timeless are Goanna's 'Solid Rock' , 'Sounds of Then' by Gang Gajang and 'Home among the gumtrees' by John Williamson. if we gonna do this list, let's do it right lets go full aussie.
The Gang Gajang song is called "Sounds of Then".
@@BigFatHarry76cheers for that. I get it wrong too sometimes.
@@BigFatHarry76 oh sorry I will edit my comment to fix it
INXS were considered at one time to be the best rock band in the world.
If only Michael Hutchence didn‘t die over his kinks… 😳
No they were not lmao
They sold out Wembley stadium & were the biggest on MTV at one point. In parts of the world they were coveted more than U2.
you're joking right.
Olivia Newton John starred in Grease as Sandy Olsson opposite John Travolta
How on earth is Cold Chisel in this video only once? They probably should have 10 songs in this.
Fr like where is Bow River
Khe Sahn
Jason Donovan , really ?
@@peterlangford4479 yeah some absolute no-hoper made that video

Loved the comment 'Australia's Justin Beiber' loved it
As an aussie that spent their teenage years in the 80s I can't believe Jason Donovan made the list so many times, yet other more deserving bands were not included
So many missed - The Church, Rose Tattoo, The Angels, Hoodoo Gurus, Hunters and Collectors, Nick Cave, Noiseworks.... so many bands worthy of the list
Also it may have taken the US 40yrs - but thanks to Padam Padam Kylie Minogue is hot news right now and is doing a Vegas residency with sold out shows
You: I don’t know that ….every Aussie watching : oh the nostalgia
about 20% of these even I didn't know, especially obscure B sides from the early 80s stuff.
Too True mate, except the jason songs...! lol
oh the nostalgia; SPOT ON
Great selection of music, but another pointless 'nobody person reacts to stuff' video. I'd rather watch the originals uninterrupted than hear a nobody go 'wow, I never knew that ...'. Like all 'react' videos, there's nothing added, just some random talking head nodding or adding pointless commentary. We don't care.
That, and Stock, Aitken and Waterman have a LOT to answer for!!
Saying the Aussie accent comes through in Men at Work is hilarious, Colin Hay is Scottish, and has a Scottish accent 😂
At least that's not a problem for Brian Johnson. 😁
@@AndrewJens most 60’s and 70’s Aussie bands had Scottish or English born members, in the 80’s they were all from NZ
Beat me to it 😉
I love that lyric in “Down Under” The line says “Do you come from a land DownUnder? Where beer does flow and men chunder? “Chunder is an Australian word for vomit. The character in the video is drunk and opening cans and spilling beer everywhere.
@@richardanderson5424 I’m Australian, so I have chundered many a time… though I don’t really drink beer. Chunder is particularly associated with a hangover more so than just being sick.. “how’s the hangover?” “Yeah much better, had a chunder” incidentally Vegemite toast is a great hangover remedy
Late to the party here but this missed the best of Aussie Rock from the 80's. Screaming Jets, Paul Kelly, Hoodoo Gurus, The Church, GangGajang, Yothu Yindi... to name a few. I was glad to see Slim Dusty included. Cant get anymore iconic than him. ❤
GangGajang one of my favourites. All their songs are fab. Spy Vs Spy another cracker of a band ❤
I love how he laughs at Jason Donovan just like we do!
And I still cringe at the Kylie clips (altho it was kinda funny hearing massacre her name over and over 😅).
Don't get me wrong, I'm pleased she made such a big name for herself in the UK (warms my feminist ❤) but I just never liked her music (and this video reminded me just how much 😏)
Edit: but omg, he was so right about Jason being the Aussie Justin Beiber of that generation. He did NOTHING for me but I remember some of the girls at school going on and on....🤢
And called him the Justin Bieber of the 80s. So true! He was a product, not a musician.

What made me laugh was that you couldn't understand THE LAND DOWN UNDER singers "aussie" accent....BUT THE FRONT MAN WAS SCOTTISH🤣
I chuckled at that also... !
What he doesn’t know and I think many others also may not know is that our singing voice in English doesn’t usually give away our accent. It only becomes recognisable when we speak. This doesn’t always happen when a foreigner sings in English, e.g. a native French speaker. Colin Hay definitely loses his Scottish accent when he’s singing.
Not to mention that AC/DC were/are made up of scottish and english dudes, and of course, BARNESY is scottish.
@@DropBearAntixMost white Australians are from somewhere else. To be born in a country is one thing then to live and grow up in another intrenches the fabric of that culture within you.
Same with ACDC.
You have no idea about the brilliance of Australian musicians.

That's the bubble they (Americans) live in.
Ryan, Kylie Monogue is still huge in the UK and has been a big hit artist for the last 30plus years. If the USA weren't so preoccupied in promoting only their own artists, they would discover a wealth of good music from alot of other countries around the world. The internet thankfully, has opened the world to alot of ignorant Americans on lots of topics.

Yes, you should def check out "I Was Only 19".
Dave Evans was actually AC/DC first lead vocalist
@@mjr320 Yep, and Dennis Loughlin from Sherbet occasionally did lead vocals as well. But let’s face it, they didn’t take off until Bon arrived and they recorded High Voltage (the album).
I saw AC/DC play with Bon Scott at a local Western Australian beachside hotel back in 1973. Saw quite a few of these bands in pub sessions back in the 1970s, including Icehouse (the guy singing "you must be crazy...") and Slim Dusty back in 1971. Cost .50c to get in to see him. That was in Esperance, WA
Yeah nah, he's not buried in Freo cemetery but there is a memorial to him in there. He's actually buried in a private location known only to his family.
As another poster had said, Bon is not buried in Freo cemetary. He has a plaque in the lawn section, there is a memorial gate from the main road into that part of the cemetary, and his family donated a seat nearby for people to sit. I visit it often as parents and in-laws are in the same cemetary. There's always little tokens left behind - cans and bottles. There's a new movie bio being made in Australia about him. Should be great.
The last one on that list...John Farnham, Your the voice....was the biggest selling single of all times in oz.

SO much great music in Australia, in the eighties. So many fabulous solo artists and incredible bands. We have given great gifts to the world, for sure.

The first song you mentioned “The Age of Reason” was sung by John Farnham, ‘The Voice’, a legendary Aussie who had a hit with another song “You’re The Voice. He had many hits in several decades in Oz.
He was also the last singer. “You’re The Voice.
He revived his career in the last 70s/early 80s. He’d been a heartthrob in the early 70s, kept performing but didn’t have a BIG hit for quite a while. Still going, still loved.
Never liked "The Voice". The line 'with the power to be powerful' - just awful, and deeply naïve. Power always means the power to make other people do as you say, powerfulness always means powerlessness for someone else, and cannot mean anything else. I prefer "Age of Reason".

Crazy facts: AC/DC used to play the Sunday afternoon session at my local pub [Leederville Hotel] in Perth, Western Australia. The music was just as iconic then as it is now; the session was always packed. The 'Highway to Hell' song is about a stretch of the Canning Highway between one pub they played at [the Raffles Hotel, Applecross] and another pub in Fremantle. They would drive from one to the other between gigs and usually 'downing a few' beers... hence, highway to hell.
My dad worked at the family hotel as a barman in the late 70s and 80s in Sydney. He got to know all the bands before they were big. We had an autograph book with a lot of the lead singers signatures in it. It's long gone now
And Russel the lead singer from Air Supply worked at Radio Rentals in Artarmon in Sydney doing office work.. he was so quiet… he played in a local band and eventually got noticed when he applied for a part in a stage play which is where he met the tall blond American … they clicked and formed the group Air Supply and the rest is history

@@mariettew-b9629 Yes! Plus he’s always been willing to share the stage with other artists or take a step back to let them shine! John has humility. I remember many years ago, I attended one of his concerts and after the show ended, everyone made their way to the carpark out the back of the venue, a multi-storey carpark, but not many left, most of us stayed and waited for John to exit the building because we wanted to cheer for him one last time. We waited, and waited, and finally, out he came, and the entire carpark erupted with cheers, whistles and applause. John stood there and accepted it all, for a couple of minutes, and then he began to signal us so we would stop. His finger went up to his lips 🤫🤫 and he kept lowering his hands until there was absolute silence. At the top of his lungs, he shouted, “THANK YOU!!!” And we all cheered again! I think everyone’s heart was on fire, I know mine was! This guy had just spent the last couple of hours singing, joking and interacting with us from the stage, and we wanted to love him! He allowed us to do that and then thanked us sincerely! I pray for his full recovery and a blessed retirement. God bless you, John! 🙏🥰🇦🇺
@@Jeni10 He also was the lead singer of LRB for a time as well. Awesome guy
Yep, John's vocal of "Help" with the Melbourne symphony orchestra is one of my favourite performances ever. It changed that song for me, it was so raw.
@@kristyholden2947just thinking about it gave me chills!
After Olivia Newton-John passed, Foo Fighters had custom bass kick drum skins made in her honor, not many people noticed that.
They made her into drum skins!? That's terrible
John Farnham was also in Little River Band. I love that the list played one of his clips, then one of LRB’s.
surprised you arent familiar with Kylie given she had a massive hit in the US with Cant get you out of my Head a few years back and recently with Padam Padam , plus is performing in Vegas and won a Grammy just recently for Best Pop Dance Recording
Loved that!!! Joe Dolce's "Shaduppa you face" brings back memories. "It's a not so bad, it's a nice a place, Ahh shaduppa you face!!" 😂😂 Split Enz and Dave Dobbyn aren't Aussie - gotta credit our NZ cousins.
Joe Dolce was born in Ohio America of Italian parents.
Came to Aus um, he wasn’t young. Must look it up.
The best laugh.
@@bernadettelanders7306 somehow I can't see "shaddupya face" going down in the USA. it was such a classic in australia though.
@@user-bn4jk8gn1k
Neither can I lol
He’s still here in Aus. He’s related to a friend of mine. I’ve never met him though. He’s aged of course, totally bald now. He’s here to stay.
I never knew Joe Dolce could be counted as Australian. He played an Italian in a British sitcom called 'Mind Your Language ' about a class of adults learning English as a second language. Shaddap Your Face famously kept Vienna by Ultravox off the number one spot in the British Top Ten.
Slang for AC/DC is Akkadakka, Aussie music institution. I highly recommend checking out INXS, full songs. All these songs are awesome, and way better than the music being produced today.
Live from Wembley 😊
I loved Dragon from new Zealand but mived to Sydney we loved that band still do, the kead singer died if throat cancer poor guy sad 😔 really nice guy too. R. I. P Mark hunter !❤🎉😢
I love how John Farnham is singing in his own videos and then the time he was with Little River Band come through too
Kylie Minogue just won a Grammy last month for padam padam. She also had a number 1 single in the US in the early 2000s with "can't get you out of my head"
I thought he would have known that too, about Kylie just winning a Grammy.
Kylie Minogue (rhymes with vogue) moved to England where her career took off. She’s still there, working and visiting home occasionally. Her successful sister is Dannii Minogue, who lives and works in Australia.
😂 clearly not gay if he doesn't know who Kylie Minogue is😂😂
Kylie actually moved her central home back to Australia a couple of years back... she's just rarely in it since she spends a lot of time in Vegas lately for her residency.
Kylie Minogue and Jason Donovan were part of the SAW "Hit Machine" stable. Stock, Aitken and Waterman were writers and producers who churned out hits in the 80s with 13 number 1 singles in the UK.
Holy guacamole! I did not realise Rick Springfield was an Australian born rock icon. I mean Jessie's Girl.!? How iconic is that?
So proud to be Vintage Aussie

@@lillibitjohnson7293 Yes and Ross Wilson wrote this song and Nicole Kidman is in the film clip
Bop girl was such a silly song but we all knew the words and it was a hell of a fun song to sing with everyone after a few too many Bundy & cokes. 😁
Love how you enjoyed this, I did too. Your collection included lots of NZ songs as well - Split Enz, Dave Dobbyn. Crowded House is both AUS and NZ. I’m a Kiwi and very proud of our music industry, but Australia has some absolute powerhouse artists. We are well spoilt with awesome local music.
Several were British too!
New Zealand really should have morphed into an Australian State, we would have had a better Rugby Union team and you would have had a better Rugby Leage team and a better netball team and more Olympic medals! A win, win I say
@@SpiritualPsychotherapyServices British born but they developed and perfected their talent in Australia
You know the rules, if a kiwi is successful & ever steps foot in Australia then they can be claimed. Except for flight of the conchords because their accent is too distinct to hide.
was gonna say that "is someone gonna tell him crowded hous, split enz, Dave Dobbyn are kiwis? Finn brothers brilliant songwriters.
Jason and Kylie both started out as soap opera stars and then moved to England. Jason became a musical theatre West End performer and Kylie became very popular as a singer, she is now known worldwide and is still putting out new material. Her sister, Danni, also went to England and was very successful there. I don't know who compiled this list but Dragon and Crowded House/Split Enz are from New Zealand. Also Jason Donovan and Rick Springfield didn't have a huge number of hits in Australia, there are so many other performers who were better and more successful. Can't believe you had never heard of Olivia Newton John, she was big here, the UK and the US. She starred in Xanadu with Gene Kelly and she was Sandy in Grease.
LMAO - yes Kylie Minogue was prolific in the 80s.... and 90s... and 00s, 10s and 20s. Check out her wiki, I can't do her career justice in this comments section.
🇦🇺Thanks Australia!
So many cool songs.
I love AC/DC, John Farnham‘s „The Voice“ and Rick Springfield‘s „Celebrate Youth“!
But what really killed me is that cringy Kylie+Jason „Especially For You“ duet:
I learned the whole lyrics of the Kylie part by heart
as a kid
in Germany🇩🇪
with almost no knowledge of English back then.
Listening to the song right now, it brings me close to tears to realize I still know every single word! 🥲😂
„And all the love I have is especially for you…“
"The beer does flow and men chunder 😅"
Thats the line in Men at Works Down Under
No.
I think that line might have been “where women blow & men thunder”
“Where women throw & men chunder” came later.
Typical Ozzie attitude: use a song about bodily functions to stick it to Americas Cup.
Of course he won't know what "chunder" means...

@@annewilson8454 I hope you listened to the song & heard all the words yourself, and aren’t just relying on a Yank- or AI- generated web page. I’ve read some of those that just don’t ‘get’ Aussie words.
Kylie Minogue sings "Padam Padam"! She's been around for 5 decades! ❤
Johnny Farnham, Kylie & Olivia were huge in the 80s, AC/DC , Midnight oil were another great music machine for the decade, & yes you didn’t say Minogue right the first time but you eventually got it right., her & Jason Donovan were a thing in the 80, they both starred in a show called neighbours then. She has gone onto be a fantastic performer,he not so much.
Ryan - when you watched the video about Eurovision, you saw Olivia Newton-John and said she looked like the girl that played Sandy in Grease - only to realise that was because she WAS the girl who played Sandy in Grease. Now you say she looks iconic but you don't know her? Oh dear.... 😂
I was only 19 by Red Gum you should really do a vid on and more of these. You can play the songs just stop once or twice during it and talk about it. Then you won't get demonetised.
I can't listen to "I was only 19" without getting a tear in my eye. An interesting hip hop version by "The Herd" is also worth a listen.
The video for Bop Girl by Pat Wilson featured a young Nicole Kidman. The song was written by her then husband, Ross Wilson, lead singer of Mondo Rock.
Came across your channel today, watched the cop and the biker clip.
Then I watched this 80's clip, I've seen quite a few of these bands.
Cold Chisel with front man Jimmy Barnes was and still is massive, you've got him twice in your clip, I'm going to his August concert.
I was waiting with bated breath for Australian Crawl with front man James Reyne which appeared once. Australian Crawl (Aussie Crawl) was massive, James Reyne is currently doing his Crawl File Tour and I'm going to his October concert.
A great band called Rose Tattoo with front man Angry Anderson didn't make the list but are really worth listening to, they were the first band I saw in a smoky-filled establishment.
Australia 🇦🇺 punches well above its weight in the entertainment world 👊👊👍👍
Not in TV though, unless you love Rebecca Gibney
As do our Kiwi cousins.
Australian music is very underrated. The Aussie music that is successful overseas is just the tip of a huge iceberg.
@@freeman10000 I mean, how many know Kahvas Jute's bass player Bob Daisley went on to play with Rainbow and Ozzy Osbourne?
Yes, Kylie Minogue, Cate Blanchett and Nicole Kidman have all said at various times how difficult it is to become recognised in Australia and that they found it easier to succeed professionally overseas.
This was the part that was playing so definitely "chunder" "He was six-foot-four and full of muscle, I said, "Do you speak-a my language?" He just smiled and gave me a Vegemite sandwich, And he said "I come from a land down under Where beer does flow and men chunder". Pretty ironic that Ryan picked the "Australian" accent of Scotsman Colin Hay!
There's so many great lines in that song 😆 But yanks would never understand a word of it
Kylie is now doing Vegas as far as I know from last year she is booked out until June.
Many of the actors in Grease WERE either side of 30, you weren’t imagining things.
Kylie Minogue has been having hit albums since late 80’s, she’s currently doing a residency in Vegas.
"Is AC/DC from Australia?" We would describe most of our artists as 'Australian made, from imported ingredients.'
Many of our biggest stars were born in England, Scotland, New Zealand, etc, and immigrated here when they were young.
True, but to be fair, most Australians are also "Australian made, from imported ingredients" in some capacity. XD

@georginaadair8438 My ex went to the piano/guitar player's engagement party after he formed 1927.
Kylie Minogue (Min-o-g) and Jason Donovan were actors in the soap opera "Neighbours" before singing careers took off.
And yes, I thought you'd know ONJ when she sang Physical. "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" and "I was only 19" are two war protest songs you should review some time - it helps explain the spirit of the Anzac soldiers sent off from a tiny, fledgling country to WWI and then the Vietnam war.
You crack me up. You mention Grease and you don’t know who Olivia is? 😘 wow. I want to listen to all these songs. I’m Australian and I didn’t realise Air supply or Rick Springfield were Australian either. Lol I’m from the Kylie and Jason era to be fair though. 😬
