You may not be mandated to get private health insurance but if you earn over a certain amount per year, and don't get it, you end up paying more tax. I've had private insurance since I was born (originally on my mother's cover and now on my own). For $20-$30 per month, it can get you 1000s of dollars in benefits. Every few years I get an essential in-hospital test done. All I pay is $500 which is essentially a one-off admission fee. All the doctor fees are covered by insurance and a second admission to any hospital in the same policy year is free as I've already paid the maximum amount. My father spent weeks in palliative care in a private hospital before he died. All my mother had to pay was about $300 (this was decades ago). Without health insurance the bill would've been thousands. Yes you can get free health care with Medicare, but you can wait years to see a specialist, even with a life-threatening illness, you don't get to choose your doctor and public hospitals are nowhere near as nice. Unfortunately the vast majority of emergency departments are located in public hospitals, so you don't get any choice with that (especially if taken by ambulance as they are required to go straight to the nearest ED) and private hospitals are mostly for specialist treatment and elective surgery. For those who can afford it, it's definitely worth it. My dance teacher complained last year when she had to pay $7000 for a simple operation to fuse two bones together in her foot but maintains she doesn't need hospital cover, only extras cover (physic, chiro, dentistry, etc). Get both!!! It'll cost a bit upfront but it's absolutely worth it in the long-run. Australians dread getting sick in America and having to seek hospital treatment because all the US health system cares about is the limit on your credit card. They won't treat you unless you can afford to pay for it, which is why so many Aussies pay for travel insurance when travelling overseas.

Preferential voting is the ONLY fair system, the American system of "First past the post is fraught with danger and undemocratic, i'e if you had 5 independents and a Democrat and a Republican running, if the Republican and the Democrat only got say around 35% each and the 5 independents got 6% each, the Republican or the Democrat would win with less than 40% of the vote, 60% of the people did not want them but they can still win with not much more than a 1/;3rd of the vote, that cannot happen in Australia, sometimes it is more imporatnt to NOT get what you don't want than it is to get what you do want, like when Ralph Nader ran as a Green in the 2000 election, now if you voted green then the last person you would want to win would be George W, if they had a second choice they would have voted for Al Gore, it works the other way as well, like if a Libertarian took votes off the Republican, it splits the vote, how is that fair? Lets get one thing straight, Democracy does not work, not in any country, it is just the best system there is, Nothing run by a committee is efficient but the risk of any other system where all the power is in one persons hands is far too great...and Australia has the fairest of the voting systems there are The other benefit of preferential voting is the ability to send a message, in America a green vote means nothing, it just goes dead in the water and no one cares, in Australia a Green vote means something, if the Labor party(the left side of politics) wins on preferences they know where those preferences came from, they know they were NOT the first choice of those people so their vote is hanging by a thread, it makes them sit up and take notice.....it works on the other side too with minor right wing parties, everyone's vote is important, and no ones vote is dead in the water before the election is over if there are 10 candidates the one with the least number of votes is eliminated and the votes dispersed to the next preference on those votes, then the person who finished 9th is eliminated and the votes dispersed etc right on down until there is only two left......then everyone in Australia who has voted has voted for one of them, the one with the most votes wins
