This is VERY common after Easter. People buy bunnies, rabbits, and chicks for Easter gifts, then dump them under the idiotic assumption “they can survive in the wild.” They are family companions, with ZERO survival skills, and will just sit there and starve. It is because of this that places like Farm Sanctuary take in abandoned bunnies, because it is such a HUGE problem - not the bunnies, the idiots.
Kudos to this lovely family for saving such a sweet soul, as I guarantee they would have died. Don’t ever stop keeping an eye out for animals in need, because people like you, who care, save lives! You are raising a good little guy there, and he will go on to help more animals because of your good hearts ♄

Yep, that's how I got my bun. Poor girl practically ran into my arms trying to get out of the park where she was dumped. These guys are doing a good job by that bunny but letting it run free in the front yard makes me nervous. Not only can she run under a car in the street but there are predators everywhere who can take that bunny before she can even think of doing anything about it. You have to be super careful with a bun.

well actually, all cats do. xD rabbits are really just built for running, and the size of their back legs dictates a low hopping motion when they're walking slowly. they can only jump like 50 cm high to evade predators (such as jumping over attacking birds of prey :o). cats are actually built to jump and can make it like two meters up a wall or over a meter with no wall to double-jump against.
rabbits' legs look like they're made for jumping, but they're really made for horizontal acceleration.

@@Ass_of_Amalek Apparently you don’t live in an area w/a lot of wildlife & birds of prey.
Bunnies are regular food around here. :/ Another was just dropped in front of my friend’s car as she was leaving her driveway. Full sized bun was apparently too heavy for the young hawk. He quickly returned to it after she went by. :/
Fox will get smaller ones, Coyotes larger, & Weasels & Fishers will get both babies & adults.
Painful to see & find the aftermath, but that’s nature’s way...
Weasels probably make the most of their catch, from what I’ve unfortunately seen.
I ran out the other night trying to help something being dragged away screaming, but never did find it. Sounded like a bun in major distress. :( They’re plentiful.
Maybe that’s why they multiply so quickly. Keeping the food supply going.
Cats & dogs are the least of their worries around here. :/

    • @Ass_of_Amalek
      @Ass_of_Amalek Pƙed 2 lety

Son NeverSet wtf are you talking about? I just pointed out that one of the relatively few situations where rabbits actually jump up is to dodge birds of prey. I didn't say anything about how successfully rabbits are hunted by any animal. my post is about the fact that jumping is kind of a false association that people have with rabbits based on their up and down walking style, and that really rabbits are built for high acceleration running (combined with digging burrows of course) and rarely jump at all.

    • @sonneversets3530
      @sonneversets3530 Pƙed 2 lety

@@Ass_of_Amalek Oh, so now it’s for “the few situations.....”
Change it up all you want. You gave me the impression that they use their jumps to avoid birds of prey. Which is how your post reads. No mention of “few” times it may happen.
A bird of prey is much faster than any bunny. And few buns will escape them, unless they’re _real close_ to a good cover, that the bird of prey would run into while pursuing it.
B/C birds of prey are so agile, they can quickly readjust their flight.
Which is why the bun would have to be _real close_ to that cover, or barrier, to foil the attack.
A jump up from a bun, would have the bird just be able to grab it while in the air. They’re not playing jump rope.😂
A bun jump is no match for a bird of prey’s speed & agility.
Your other line about their ‘high acceleration’ b/c of their hind legs, is what prompted my further comment about how that doesn’t work so well for them against other predators, either.
You can think I’m out of line for replying like I did. You shouldn’t have implied that they can easily avoid capture, then.
      NBD to me.
They can avoid capture from humans pretty easily, for sure. Wild ones, that is.
Cats are regular coyote food here, too. So their ability to jump & climb doesn’t help them much against that main predator for them here. I’m sure the coyotes are happier nabbing a kitty for a meal, than a bunny. Either will do, however. Obviously.

The wild bunnies who come into my yard to eat leftover produce from my compost pile will run if I walk by a closed window 20 feet from them while talking too loudly on the phone! Wild bunnies are practically impossible to handle (but they, like the birds, seem to enjoy my peaceful yard where they are most welcome visitors and/or temporary residents - I've had a few bunny families begin under my large lilac bush by the back fence gate). I get to enjoy the sight of beautiful wild animals without having to clean up after them and they get a free meal and/or safety from cars and predators (and stupid people who have more guns and ammo than sense).

I don't know if people normally chip their bunnies, but if you're gonna do that, you definitely should. and I would still be too scared about the bunny being spooked by a car, a wild animal, or a cat or dog. or worse yet, not get spooked and just get killed, because there definitely are dogs whose reaction to seeing a little bunny with no survival instinct would be to run and kill it very quickly, and it's a similar situation with big birds of prey.

Animals do and will run away.. It's no good waiting til the kids grow up and realize themselves how to handle them, mom should be teaching them from the get go, like before they can walk, like literally taking their hand and showing them how to touch and pet them. I have a story to tell, when I was 8-9, I had a dog, she was absolutely adorable and the sweetest ever, we were forced to get out of our house because of my mom's partner, we basically ran away and my dog was left there, I asked my mom why we didn't brought her or take her into a shelter and the truth is, the shelters in the country I lived in put down dogs there was not a single no kill shelters in the city, there was also no rescues organization nearby, as horrible as this sounds, my dog was better off living with my neighbors (yes they adopted her and I still get updates to this day) than the horror.
edit: had to correct my paragraph..

In my over 30 years of rescue hands down it is by the love of women that rescues and love are given and this story just illustrates my point. Girl says we have to take him home boy says no. In my day the ratio of girl to boy rescuers was 5:1. This gal clearly has a very very loving heart big enough to love many different kinds of life. We need more like her.

I am so thankful you found this bunny and brought him home with you. You probably saved his life. Oftentimes people will release a domesticated pet into the wild thinking they will adapt but they dont. Domesticated pets do not know how to survive in the wild on their own so you really literally may have saved his life and definitely saved him from certain suffering. I am so grateful you found him and he found you !!!!!

What a great mom’s day video!
A real mom, who’s also a bunny mom & kitty mom.
Never seen a bun be outside loose like that & still hang w/it’s owner.
Even my cousins buns were in a dog pen type cage when outside. And brought into the garage at night, to their little shed. They were never just on the ground loose like that.
Mose is just like a dog...running around & then going back when called.
Levi is a very blessed little boy having such a great, loving mom. He will grow to be a very caring, well rounded young man.
What woman can resist a guy w/a tender heart, for all Gods wonderful animals?
    Beyond good job mom!❀
Hope they all enjoy some real happy years together.
