How do you remove the pipes that run from the tank to the charcoal can? Really want to do this correctly

  • @MiataMods

Pretty cool idea but after 25+ years the canister stops working because the carcoal is saturated and it cannot absorb any more fumes or the unit gets clogged so if you want to do this, get a new canister.. but nevertheless a really clean mod! Nice vid 👍

Thanks. People say that, but where is the actual proof? Most just say this because it's 25 years old. Not hating, just looking for facts.

@MiataMods The charcoal doesn’t just endlessly absorb vapours, it only stores the vapours temporarily. When you start your engine a solenoid clicks open a number of times in quick succession and allows manifold vacuum to the canister. Each time the solenoid opens it allows the engine to take a quick breath of vapour from the canister to burn it with the regular fuel the engine is consuming. The reason the canister exists is because the pressure in the fuel tank changes depending on the weather, which is why sometimes when you unscrew your gas cap you hear air rushing in/out of the fuel neck. The excess pressure in the tank has to go somewhere and the charcoal canister acts as that place. This is also why there is a check valve in this system to allow excess pressure out of the gas tank. Long winded, but a quick summary.

He has a standalone ECM, I'd venture far enough to say that because it's an emissions item, and a standalone doesnt support that or it's not necessary too.

Only thing about this I don't like is the possibility of dumping fuel vapors anywhere near the exhaust system. I get that its filtered and you have it aiming away from that, but just a little sketch. I hope that someone doesn't do this and take that risk just from seeing this video not understanding what that system is meant to do.

It's not doing anything if you just vent it to atmosphere like this, may as well delete it. Look up how an EVAP system works. It's for sending the fumes back into your engine, it's not a filter.
