      Even if you're an experienced off road enthusiast, you're eventually going to be faced with an obstacle or situation where there's a good chance you won't make it, and there's also a good chance you don't have to attempt it either. The ones that try regardless of that risk are the ones that learn more about their vehicle and their skills, regardless of whether they make it or not. And before you say it, I can already hear you now..."but what if you don't have someone there to pull you out, or you don't have recovery gear? It's important to not get stuck in that situation!", to that I say, what on earth are you doing all by yourself on a trail without recovery gear of any sort? Sure, most of what Matt posts are people in the same position, but places like Sand Hollow have tons of capable vehicles that will see you and offer help, and there's also people like Matt to call, so you're never really riding alone in that sense. Go get yourself stuck, figure out how to get yourself unstuck, get some help if you can't, and learn how to do it better next time.

For comparison a typical Concrete Truck weighs about the same and has much fewer axles and tires to distribute the weight across and they drive through worse all the time but, the drivers are usually only operating within a specific geographic area so they have the opportunity to learn how to drive in such off-road conditions with heavy rigs.

      In my experience, you get sick to death of loud vehicle noises all the time. That's why my sports bike had to go in favour of a big sports tourer; a fancy titanium exhaust sounds great when you're bouncing the noise off the sides of a valley while zooming up it, but less so on the 200-mile A-road grind to get to said valleys. I like all of the different vehicles that Matt drives but the Morrvair is the one I would chose to drive if I had the opportunity to take it out for a day of off-roading. The wrecker is pretty cool in it's own right and I think as Matt refines it and makes modifications to it to better deal with the situations that are encountered in the recoveries I think the wrecker will become the go to Swiss army knife and mainstay of Matt's operations. But the Morrvair is the real gem, in my opinion anyways. I think pound for pound the Morrvair has what it takes to make an off-roading experience well worth having.

When you paint your tow points/hooks in a very bright orange ( or maybe matt's offroad yellow is good enough), then you will get triggered when the rope has been taken off the other cars. the bright color will stand out resulting in you remembering that this piece is also yours instead of a chrome or black color that blends in with the rest of the vehicles resulting in thinking this is something thatnbelongs to that vehicle and forget about it. Just a simple trick that will keep your important gear complete so it is availlable when needed. makes life more easy.

    • @JT_70
      @JT_70 Před rokem +1

      Holly wants exactly the same bumper. As she said on her channel, MM’s bumper is for looks and rock crawling, not towing. This is the second bumper she has ruined trying to tow. I believe when Matt adds the reinforcement to the back of her new bumper it will be strong enough for towing.

    • @neilfromclearwaterfl81
      @neilfromclearwaterfl81 Před rokem +1

      Holly really likes that particular bumper so hopefully when Matt revisits how it was reinforced the last time it bent he'll come up with a 2.0 version that will hold up better. My thought is a frame mounted "Hidden Hitch" type receiver that ends basically flush with the bumper exactly where the current recovery point is located with a neatly cut square hole for the draw bar to pass through. Put the same eye on the end of the draw bar and paint the end of the receiver along with the draw bar to match the bumper. Keep them independent without welding the receiver to the bumper so the bumper can still be easily removed without having to cut it away from the receiver. Harbor Freight probably has the receiver and draw bar needed for this on the shelf in their local store.
      Makes me wish I was local and in a position to drop in to lend a hand on this.

    • @darrinrice367
      @darrinrice367 Před rokem

      @@neilfromclearwaterfl81 You're on the right track, I think, with the frame-mounted "Hidden Hitch" idea, but I think it's gotta get outta the middle; too much lateral stiffening (pronounced "added weight") required make it beefy enough to never bend again. Instead, fab up TWO hitch points tied right into the frame rails on each side, with simple, square pass-thru holes in the bumper itself. Towing, pulling, recovery forces would be transferred directly to the frame, and having two hard points would enable more and different recovery plans that would benefit not only Holly, but anybody she ended up helping out on the trails.

    You guys always make my day. keep up the good work 👏. Making the world better one pull at a time.

  • @darrinrice367
    @darrinrice367 Před rokem

    The recovery points (yes, plural -- one to either side) on the new bumper need to be CLOSE to where the bumper ties into the frame. The reason this bumper bent is because the shackle is in the middle, but the frame connections are way out to either side, which made the middle the point where it was LEAST able to resist bending when all of that pulling force got applied.
    THIS time out, yeah, beef it up with some backing reinforcement, but build in TWO recovery points -- one on each side -- as close to the frame connections as you can get. Nothing that sticks out like tow hooks would, but maybe a pair of reinforced, square tube receiver openings with the clearance back behind to get the pins in and out. You for sure can figure it out, this ain't your first rodeo, but you nor I want to see you end up having to talk about Bumper Number Three, so I figured I'd throw the structural engineering into the mix so this one will be the LAST one MM ever needs.
