So in Ever After High, Cerise's whole thing is that she is secretly half wolf (her mom is red riding hood and her dad is the big bad wolf, scandalous, I know) she has a sister named Ramona who is the daughter of fhe big bad wolf, but it's supposed to be a secret, so Cerise is representing her mother's side, and Ramona her dad's side. So the Cerise Wolf doll is supposed to be kind of an AU where Cerise decides to embrace her Wolf side instead of her mom's side.
Personal tangent but Cerise is my favorite character and she means a lot to me as a biracial person, because her whole character kind of represents the struggle with growing up mixed race in a community full of people that aren't.
The Cedar Wood doll box is interactive. The marionette handles are on the top of the box and you can actually pick them up and move the doll around in the box without opening the box.

Great topic. I am a collector of Living Dead Dolls which are known for their coffin shaped packaging (they pre date Monster High by several years), so much so that it is part of their identity. Many collectors have a debate about keeping them in box versus out of box saying the coffins are part of the doll just as much as the accessories they come with. I agree it is not feasible with space to display dolls in their packaging. Also so much work and attention to detail has gone into the doll that to not enjoy out of the box, you miss out what the creators put into the doll.
The ComicCon She-ra doll from around 2016. Her box is enormous and it's a box within a box, fully illustrated all over the outside. Inside there is a second illustrated box that folds open and has this awesome 3d cardboard backdrop with her 2 extra outfits hidden within in. Mattel's best packaging hands down. I will keep it forever. Also Lalaloopsy Ivory Ice Crystals had sturdy, beautiful packaging. She looked great in-box. I regret ever opening it, especially since her stand later broke.
100% agree, I prefer G3 dolls but the art and boxes from G1 were very unique and beautiful.
Also just want to add, growing up i loved to make things out of doll boxes for my dolls and one of my favorite to unbox was always lalaloopsy girls and lalaloopsy in general. They always went all out with the art and details.

I agree with your additions to our list. I love reusable packaging. I liked the Barbie fashionista pink zip bags we used to get. They were great for doll storage bags, travel bags, and to keep clothing and accessories together. Also, side note I didn't notice any audio issues and I love that you kept your intro/outro music. It's so calming. ❤
I’m glad it’s not terrible! I had all of one video where the mic worked right and it was ~crisp~ and now I’m chasing that high lmao
The ironic part of this all is that Darko was doing the G1 art back then too, I don't care for the overly rendered-out portraits he does for G3 because Monster High was never super realistic like sister brand Barbie. The cartoony-graphic novel-esque style he used for the packaging and comics were some of my favorite renditions of the MH ghouls. His art for Venus and Abbey is great it's just I love the flatter less rendered look.
It would be cool to have a box that is like a stage. It could have curtains you pull strings on the side of the box to open. And dramatic music could play as the curtains open and a spotlights turn on.

This is such an obtresting video concept I'm so here for it. I used to be obsessed with the art that came with the box's for the dolls I got.
Aaahhggaah! I used to go to SDCC every year for a while but I hadn't rekindled my love for dolls and had NO IDEA these stunning dolls were happening RIGHT THERE. WHAT HAVE I DONE?! I've NEVER seen that Ceries Hood/Wolf doll but I am DYING over her. And I think anyone else would agree that I am NOT being dramatic. She is. Everything!
I'd also add the Star Wars x Barbie dolls! I took mine out of box bc otherwise I'd never display them, but i absolutely have to preserve the gorgeous artwork!
Vampires Heart and Cleopatra are my favorites from this list; so beautiful. The boxes are amazing 💗
I don't know if this is a hot take, but I don't like boxes that open up and take up twice as much space as they need. For example, the Cerise Wolf box. It looks great if you have shelf space, but if I want to display it in a box and I don't have room for a page of text next to it, I'll either have to damage the box or put other dolls or other boxes in front of the book page and I guarantee it won't look good without effort. I don't mind boxes with sleeves that can be opend. So that you can remove the sleeve completely, or leave it open, or closed (it seems that was the case with the circus Draculaura). Exceptions are boxes that become playsets, and are designed to take up more space to give more opportunities for play. For example, OMG boxes or Disney princesses.
Also, I don't like the mirror box, because you can't get the doll out of it without damaging the box. In all other boxes, you also need to cut tape or rubber bands, but here you have to cut the "mirror" itself, and it will be impossible to put it back together.
My favorite video that does a great job of showing EAH exclusive boxes is called "Ever After High Returns? My Exclusive Dolls and Thoughts on the Future of EAH" by My World (the packaging discussion starts around the 7 minute mark). It's a very emotional and personal video about these dolls, but it's also informative about their stories, and shows how the boxes survived shelf life, and what their downsides are. I would highly recommend watching it, but keep in mind that I cried while watching it.
PS If you don't watch the suggested video, the idea behind the SDCC EAH exclusives is that the girls followed in their parents' footsteps instead of defying fate. Raven didn't want to be the Evil Queen, but became one, Cerise was named after her mother, but in this version she embraced the wolf in herself, and Cedar turned into a doll like her father.
Some recent Barbie packaging that is particularly good is the Barbie Rewind line (box looks like a VHS cassette and stand base looks like an audio cassette) and the Barbie Dia de Muertos dolls (outside artwork is amazing, and the doll is posed in a nice, thematic background).
The Generation Girl Barbies that had boxes that looked like a bedroom. I just googled ..the line was called My Room

My mom used to collect the barbies of the world dolls (not the princess ones, the regular ones) and I'm so sad she just got rid of them without telling me, she kept all of them in box and had *quite a few*
Yes!! I am definitely a package girlie. Most of my collection is in box (definitely not exclusively and I don't collect for packaging for the most part, but for the doll itself)

i think the way the omgs were laid out in box (not the ones with seperate compartments) just looked sooo good. look up inbox photos of the travel line especially theyre soo prettily laid out and then you get to open so much stuff and dress and bond with the doll - i think every child mustve loved those especially
The amount of cuts I use to get opening those winx dolls as a kid 😅 they were a pain in the butt to unbox, that plastic was so freaking sharp 😅😅

I feel like important context here was missed - the puppet strings in Cedar's box MOVE!! you can move them like an actual puppet!!! If I'm wrong pls be nice lol, but I swear I remember seeing that in a youtube video once. I don't have her so I may be wrong.

The Bratz Mowalola boxes are so cool. I like how Bratz changes the box handle with each line. I like the iconic shape of Bratz boxes too. The Princess line has amazing boxes. I hope they do repros because those dolls are expensive even out of box, let alone NIB.
I would love to have an EAH doll thats still in box. I actually like the packaging more than the dolls. I don't like their round faces.

Winx Dolls are the best they are 7 Fairys Bloom Stella Flora Roxy Musa Aisha and Tecna
G3 MH art looks like glamour photo posed by a model (very similar to Rainbow High) whereas the G1 art was more comic book-esque and really captured a character in the middle of a scene imo. I love packaging design, so I much prefer G1s take with the boxes and wish G3 adopted some of its elements, but ALSO wished some of the recent G1 collector dolls also had more of it instead of the doll pictures they've stuck to.
Excellent way to put it and yeah, I’m sad that the new g1 dolls haven’t had the old art…or really any art 😅 definitely less of a fan of photos on boxes personally

The way I look at it, is the doll should always be better than the doll packaging. Its great to have an attractive box but if the doll pales into comparison then its not the way to be. I collect dolls, they are not in box and I don't play with them but I do change their elastic bands when I need to.
16:46 yeah I agree, I think the reason the new art style feels underwhelming is because it’s inconsistent. The first releases had - um- less then stellar art with no interesting highlights or shading, inconsistent style between the artwork for each girl, and wonkey anatomy. It just looks so generic honestly. No hate to the artist who made the art it felt like the poor artist was being rushed 😰 and then Abbey and Venus have like this super detailed and shiny renders while pretty it doesn’t match.

I kinda wish I kept the Vampire Heart Draculaura in her box (I tried my best to open the box carefully but I just am not a careful person and it didn’t happen for me). That’s awesome you were able to keep the box intact! 😄
I do wish the art style on G3 was as intricate and unique like G1.

I feel the opposite, I don't like the G3 MH dolls, I find them too friendly looking to represent Monsters, their new pets are too friendly looking too imo.
