*Uses single channel memory on AMD APU
yea. like he stated even at the start of the video... sometimes it's about the upgrade path, more than the current performance. $350 will get you up and running. the SMART option is choosing components that you can add to instead of replace, when your budget is that limited.
if i have 8gb installed, and want to upgrade to 16....
-if i have 2x4gb to take advantage of dual channel, and it's a budget (or just an ITX) board with only 2 ram slots... i have to toss out the old ram to get better.
-if i have 1x8 ... ok i lose out on the dual channel boost... FOR NOW... but all i need is to buy another 1x8 to go in beside it, and i'm not wasting any old components.
@@tzxazrael honestly, that's just not a realistic scenarion. For one, an ITX build on a budget is an oxymoron. You are definitely paying a premium if you go with ITX, so any reasonable budget build will go with either mATX or ATX. Once you go mATX or ATX, you might as well get a 4 slot board. The 2 slot boards are the bottom of the barrel, which is the exact opposite of what you want if future upgradability is something you care about.
TL;DR: you always go with dual channel memory, even if you are on a budget. Always.
@@tzxazrael Have to say if you are going two memory slots you should still get dual channel, sell the 2x4 memory chips and use that money to help invest in 2x8, not like ddr4 is going out of style any time soon so you will get close to what you payed for it. Memory is one of those things that doesn't depreciate in value quickly since it is used on so many different generations of consumer hardware.
Best advice for an AMD budget build is to buy the fastest memory you can at a set price point in dual channel. the price difference between corsair vengeance 3200mhz vs 2400 mhz is literally 2-5 dollars and sometimes they cost exactly the same. You will benefit from that way more than it's worth waiting to buy a second memory stick down the line, most people won't feel the need to upgrade for much longer since the performance will be so much better, and when they do just follow the advice in my first paragraph. Sure it's a tad bit more work but compared to having a much slower PC it's worth it.
@@Mike_Hogsheart Agreed. If you can only afford 8GB of ram, get 2 4GB sticks for dual channel, or you'll be leaving up to 10% performance on the table.

@@ssu7653 This is the most budget build ever, and lets not forget that budget boards usually come with only 2 ram slots. So it doesn't make sense to go for dual channel of 4gb when you will have to replace both as soon as you want to upgrade. Also the dual channel would add like what? 2-5% of performance? Big deal. Its not ram problem. CPU is just weak. Be realistic.
@@udontneed2know801 For the GPU-Testing maybe, but for the iGPU-Test he does in the beginning, the single channel probably crippled him rather badly.

Agreed. Very unobjective. Because if you are not AMD fan today and dont shit on intel, youre not cool probably. Do you think there is 2 years old video, how this intel cpu is shredding AMD? I guess no.
what a shit video tbh, i immediately knew he won't bench it against the intel with the graphics card

Dual channel ram really helps with integrated graphics
This is what I watch when I'm doing my online classes 🤣
I agree so much about getting used hardware I've done so for years. Almost everything in my PC is used. I've even managed come out ahead a few times when upgrading and selling an old piece for more than the newer cost me :-)

First time iv someone have a single stick of ram and a Zen cpu within 6 inches of each other.
@@michaelwerner5049 I had that when I was diagnosing whether I had some faulty RAM. Turns out I did. Got it replaced under warranty from the manufacturer.
Confusing as to why you have single stick ram, I've built a lot of budget builds and dual channel performance is worth the extra $10 on any budget build.
2x4 costs the same as 1x8 even.
@@excitedbox5705 so you can upgrade whenever you want with another 8 down the line
@@excitedbox5705 Well were I'm from and with the ram I use patriot premium between a 8GB single to a dual with 4GB sticks, it would cost me $5 more to order the two 4GB sticks on amazon. So markets vary, I just guessed it would be about a $10 difference. Yes both are the same clock.
I agree they might have reached near the fps of ryzen 5 3600 if they have used the dual channel set up on their test rig
It might not be realistic, but the point was seeing how powerful the CPU is in the least powerful system configuration possible. You can easily assume a more powerful build with two stick of ram would be, well, more powerful.
I don’t understand your problem here.
I got an athlon 3000g in my pc because of the integrated graphics, im waiting for a good deal
"if youre gonna do a budget build, at least do it the smart way" then proceeds to do it the most stupid way by using single channel ram at low speed on a cpu that is entirely dependant on the ram speed and not overclocking the cpu/gpu combo of the 3000G. You dropped the ball on that one Linus.

Would be really good to see a retest of this using dual channel memory (2x 4GB) v 1x8GB for example.
There's sometimes some really good deals on cheap memory sticks and these are probably the same things that people with the extreme budget (or low income/country average wage) may want to look at :) even if thats NOT what the western world would chose, and that extra memory bandwidth can do wonders for these cheap, integrated systems.
I think a lot of ULTRA budget, will go for 2 smaller sticks than 1 larger stick. Places often do clearance on the smaller sticks as demand is lower :)
