    To most Brits, Cadillac is a brand that represents all that is big, brash and brilliant about America. It’s right there in the list with hot dogs, baseball, Beyoncé, Hollywood, McDonalds, NASCAR and all of those great American things. And yet, it’s also a brand that few Brits feel particularly drawn to, nor that has historically worked well in the UK and European markets. But maybe, just maybe, the new, electric Cadillac OPTIQ SUV can change that…
    That’s certainly what Cadillac is hoping, anyway. And on paper, the OPTIQ looks good. It’s a rival for cars like the Jaguar I-Pace, Audi Q4 e-tron and BMW iX3, although at over 4.8m long and 1.9m wide, it’s actually a bit bigger than those alternatives and is more like the size of a BMW iX. And if that’s just not big enough for you, and you do want a bigger electric Cadillac that’s the size of the iX, you’ll probably want the Cadillac LYRIQ, which is also coming to Europe as part of the American brand’s new launch as an electric-only brand. Whether it’s coming to the UK is a bit less certain for now, as that involves engineering the cars for right-hand drive, but it seems very likely that we’ll eventually see the Cadillac OPTIQ on sale in the UK by the end of 2025.
    The Optiq sits on a modified version of the same Ultium platform that underpins the Hummer EV and the Cadillac Lyriq, and it gets an 85kWh usable battery. At the moment it’s estimated that it’ll manage around 300 miles, despite having a dual-motor setup as standard. We’d expect that’ll improve quite a bit when it’s tested under European test regulations. If it doesn’t, then the Cadillac is going to disappoint for efficiency, as lots of alternative electric cars manage a longer range from a big battery like this.
    Full charging details haven’t been confirmed, but the Ultium platform is capable of supporting 800V rapid charging - which is the super-fast charging that we’ve seen on the Kia EV6 and Porsche Taycan - and Cadillac says that the Optiq will be able to suck up 79 miles of range in just ten minutes. That suggests that the OPTIQ will get 800V charging tech and will be able to top-up at speeds of usefully over 200kW, which could make this one of the fastest-charging electric SUVs.
    Join Nicola as she takes a first look at the new Cadillac OPTIQ. Could it make a big difference when it lands in the UK next year? Let us know in the comments below.

    Google is full of facts
    Cadillac is among the first automotive brands in the world, fourth in the United States only to Autocar Company (1897) and fellow GM marques Oldsmobile (1897) and Buick (1899). It was named after Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac (1658-1730), who founded Detroit, Michigan.

    The OPTIQ starts at $54,000.
    It may be hard selling OPTIQ over the less=expensive 2024 XT4 - which has the same infotainment display and offers heated/cooled/ventilated seats. But, the Optiq does offer supercruise so that's definitely an Ace in the hole.
    The real issue will be whether or not you have easy charging at home or EVgo nearby.

    That Cadillac lady said this is the perfect time to launch BEV in Europe while almost everybody else said otherwise- Mercedes, Stellantis just closed their ACC battery plants, and Volkswagen postponed their battery plants and reintroduced internal combustion engine to the next generation cars. So interesting to see who hopped on the wrong train.

    Well GM have tried before with Cadillac and bounced off the UK market, barely registering on the triple lock of the German prestige brands. However, that was a few years ago and I do think attitudes have changed with EVs, as people seem more open to trying new (to the UK) brands. I quite like the Optiq, it's handsome and the interior looks nice - it appears to offer something different in look and feel to the legacy EU brands. I wouldn't be surprised if this did quite well.

      Yup was going to say this (contrary to what is stated in the video) isn't Cadi's first go around in Europe, it was a rather miserable failure in the UK previously but as you've said attitudes have changed and their EV products look far better than their terrible combustion vehicles they were trying to peddle back in the 90's

    I'd be nervous about a 1st gen RHD Cadillac, it's not something they do a lot. Plus they're new over here, they could well have the same parts/servicing issues as the new (here) Chinese makers.
    Emptiness of the review suggests the PR department had a lot of say on the talking points/not a lot has been revealed yet.

  • @brendonoleary519
    @brendonoleary519 Před 28 dny +2

    The vehicle looks great. However, Cadillac has a chequered history in Europe. I took a punt on a Cadillac BLS and when Cadillac withdrew from the UK and I couldn't find parts, the national Cadillac team kept telling me they were no longer trading- despite parent company GM obviously being in business- and thereore couldn't help me. A dealer kept my car on the road by stripping down a demo vehicle they had in stock.
    The car was pretty good for a mid size saloon but I lost faith in GM and sold my car at a loss to make sure I had a car I coukd use. Now older with a family, why on earth would I trust Cadillac not to strand me again if their European adventure doesn't work out?
    I'm sure what they did was completely legal and technically correct but it left a foul taste in the mouth, not dissimilar to a dodgy builder going bust and then re-emerging as a new firm.
    TL, DR: I was left to fend for myself with a difficult-to-repair car when Cadillac last failed to succeed in Europe and I would struggle to trust them again.

    I'm Canadian, and while the market here isn't the same as in the US, it is similar (more so than in Europe). From my perspective, Cadillac's market share here has been on a downward trend for quite some time. I expect they see Europe as a way of re-establishing the brand by introducing it to a new market. Will the European market take to it? I'm not so sure.

  • @jinxvrs
    @jinxvrs Před měsícem +6

    The last time GM tried to introduce Cadillac to the European market (mid to late 2000s) it was a disaster. They may do better this time, but I wouldn't be shocked that in a few years time they return to the US with their tail between their legs.

      This time they have a product tuned to a growing new market segment. They also have design which sets them apart in the luxury realm as well as a very strong engineering package with superior range as compared to most of their competition. The cache of the new range topping Celestiq will also add lustre and instant street cred.

      Both the Lyriq and Optiq will be RHD for the UK market. The Lyriq is comparable to a Q8 E-tron and the Optiq in the video is more comparable to a Q6 E-tron, so they are both larger than say an ID.4

    Lyriq has lots of great design. With some tweeks, I can see it catching on in the UK. I wonder if you are accustomed to as many choices when it comes to levels of trim. Lyriq comes with many and while the starting price is low, a well equipped model will cost lots of additional quid.

      With due respect, your disdain for Americans is misplaced - at least in this instance. There is absolutely a French and European heritage in Detroit and even in GM itself. Yeah, it's in the distant past but invoking it isn't inappropriate.
      For the record, Antoine de la Mothe, sieur de Cadillac and Alphonse de Tonty founded Fort Pontchartrain du Detroit (eventually shortened to Fort Detroit) in 1701. So, even the name "Detroit" is French - as it is the French word for "straits" (Detroit and Windsor, Ontario are on opposite sides of the straits between Lake St. Clair and Lake Erie). Shortly after arriving in New France, Antoine de la Mothe adopted his Cadillac title as a nod to Cadillac-sur-Garonne, France - a place not very far from where de la Mothe was born. A lot of historians feel he did that to blur his past in France. Regardless, it was a new world connection back to France and several places in the US bear the Cadillac name to honour de la Mothe.
      As for the brand Cadillac, it's old. When Henry Ford (the son of an Irish immigrant) walked away from the company he created only the previous year, the investors brought in an engineer (William Leland) and founded Cadillac. That was back in 1902. Cadillac's name was specifically chosen at that time to pay homage to Antoine de la Mothe and the beginnings of Detroit. The various versions of the Cadillac logo over the years have been based on Antoine de la Mothe's self-created coat of arms from the beginning, 120 years ago.
      Heck Louis Chevrolet (the founder of Chevrolet) was Swiss born and lived in France before emigrating to Canada and then eventually settling in Detroit and starting his own car company.
      People who know their history of American cars know this stuff. Nobody is saying "lineage" by the way but "heritage" or history is absolutely appropriate. Cadillac is a Detroit company and - like it or not - Detroit has French roots.

    Another fine Chinese electric automobile (made by/with SAIC in Shanghai). Nothing wrong with that (I own a Chinese EV). But it does temper the 'America's finest' trope. USA will likely get their Optiq from Mexico.

      American cars were always less well built and less luxurious than German cars. Nobody wanted any American cars other than Fords here in Europe, because Ford's European cars are designed specifically for European needs. It looks like Cadillac is finally making cars that can compete with the Germans.

    Just seen the specs on the Optic in America.... As I guessed earlier it's major weakness is it's battery pack. (1) Slow charging
    (2) Very poor range
    Everyone in Europe will find Peugeot and Renault will offer the same size vehicles with better range. They will also be far cheaper!
