2024 Cadillac XT4 Review | The Baby Caddy That's Outselling The Germans For A Reason

  • Cadillac has been on a decades long mission to bring the fight back to the German luxury brands. They've dried manual transmissions, fire-breathing supercharged V8s, some plug in hybrids, and even a Cadillac Corvette. Through it all the Escalade has been the diamond in Cadillac's crown, but the XT4 might be the one they should brag about more and spend more time on. Why? Because it's the one that's competing in the hottest luxury segment in America and it's winning there... The sub-compact SUV segment in't just important because it's growing rapidly, but because it's where the youngest luxury vehicle shoppers start, and boy is it an outlier. The best seller? Not German. Nope, it's not Japanese or American either. The best seller that Caddy's XT4 is designed to compete with is none other than Volvo's boxy XC40....

Beautiful car. Seeing the Germans straying away from nice designs and quality cars makes me more interested in Cadillac. Cadillac has been bucking conventional wisdom and have actually improved their quality, technology, and performance. I would definitely take this over any German or Genesis.

Rented one in TX two weeks ago, was very impressed with the acceleration and fuel economy. It really keeps up with the traffic on I-35 in areas where the speed limit is 80MPH. Very refined handling, spacious and elegant.

Recently had a 2023 XT4 as an airport rental for a road trip vacation.
I was stunned at how good the XT4 is.
Good handling, features and gas economy, the only negative, in my opinion was the slightly small trunk.
If your in the market, definitely shortlist for a road test

I have an Acura RDX and my dad has an XT4. We live in different states, and last summer when I was visiting him I drove us on a short road trip. My impression compared to my Acura was that the engine did not sound as refined. However, what I LOVED was the fact that you can turn off the all wheel drive. I was able to hit 36 mpg cruising on the highway. My RDX would NEVER do that well….I get maybe 24 mpg on the highway. To me that is a huge benefit. I also thought the stop/start feature was the smoothest I’ve ever experienced, and that the cabin materials were on par with the RDX.

I actually prefer the way Cadillac has executed the AWD system on demand and always there if and whenever you want it. I don’t want my vehicle doing much of anything all the time, i do prefer having the option to engage. I also appreciate that Cadillac’s drive modes actually change things mechanically, very unique especially for this class.

Cadillac designs are always classic and always classy! The GLA ad GLB interiors are too ostentation. The NX is too plain. The MCR upgrades are superb!! I'd get this, but the new Buick Envision Avenir comes out this summer and it has the same power train as the XT4 and more standard features that are options on the XT 4. But the XT4 is awfully tempting.

Man Cadillac knocked it out of the park with that interior, it’s absolutely gorgeous. Hopefully they improved the driving dynamics cos the last one I drove was not all that good to drive. Also a little disappointed about no hybrid system, the XC40and UX are my favorite due to their hybrid system, I love the idea of driving a luxury vehicle and getting well above 35mpg, if the caddy had a hybrid system. Unfortunately the UX is too small. It would shoot to the top of the segment imo

4:33 - "this is always going to disable the rear axle when you hit the start button". So every time you turn it on, it's going to be a FWD vehicle."
That's not accurate but I understand why some reviewers draw this conclusion - it took me a while to understand this set-up when I bought my 2020 XT6 (that has the same set-up.
    From the 2024 XT4 owner's manual:
"Driver Mode Control - Driver Mode Control (DMC) allows the driver to adjust the overall driving experience to better suit driver preference by adjusting vehicle systems. Drive mode availability and affected vehicle systems are dependent on vehicle trim level, region, and optional features.
If the vehicle is in Tour or AWD Mode, it will stay in that mode through future ignition cycles. If the vehicle is in any other mode, it will return to Tour Mode when the vehicle is restarted. When a mode is selected, an indicator will come on in the instrument cluster and stay on."
A number of reviewers have fully understood this set-up and it's probably because there are several AWD modes and only one of those (the one simply labelled "AWD") will enable AWD mode in future ignition cycles. In contrast, Tour mode is the only available FWD mode and selecting that mode keeps it in FWD in future ignition cycles. Weirdly, selecting most of the other AWD modes will subsequently default to FWD.
In the XT4, there are five modes: Tour (FWD) and AWD that will be retained in future ignition cycles and Sport, Off-Road, and Snow/Ice - all of which are AWD and all of which will revert to Tour in subsequent ignition cycles. In the winter, or in inclement conditions, I leave my vehicle in AWD and it always reverts to AWD when I start it up. In good road conditions on the highway, I leave it in FWD and get a significant mpg benefit.

GM forcing you to manually enable AWD is frankly dangerous. My Mom had a first gen Traverse that was "full-time" AWD as there were no drive modes to adjust, how it should be, it just sends power to the rear when needed. Her second gen has a drive mode select that lets you go between 2WD, 4WD, Sport, and Trail. If you put it in sport or trail, the next time you start the vehicle it will go back to 2WD, thankfully it will stay in 4WD if you leave it in that. She had a really hard time driving in the snow one time and when she got home I hopped in her car to check and what do you know it was in 2WD because she accidentally changed it once 🤦‍♂

Even the Q3 rides better, but nobody buys them because you can get a better deal on a Q5 since they are made in North America.

I would take the Mercedes GLB250 over this. I’ve driven the new XT4 and it drove just like a Chevy. The GLB feels distinctly German. I prefer the “simple” tech with the split screens in the GLB as well as it looks great and is easy to use. The seats in the XT4 were also very uncomfortable

That’s funny, we test drove the XT4 and the GLB250 as well as several other contenders and we had exactly the opposite reaction. The XT4 was by far the most comfortable (72, 5’8”, 160). The main contender now is the Lexus NX350 but even at my size the driving position felt claustrophobic. The only thing that concerns me for the XT4 is reliability issues mentioned on Cadillac forums.

  • @SgtNuker
    @SgtNuker Před 2 měsíci

The XT4 does look very handsome inside and out. GM did well with the color choices and their materials are great. That steering wheel has a very clean, simple appearance. The distinct lack of piano black is a breath of fresh air (for once). But when it comes to the dash ... just ... no. What is with the enormous screen? 33" ... SERIOUSLY? Things being hid behind menus that should just be buttons and touch screens that show nothing but fingerprints is stupid. Part of the luxury experience isn't hunting and pecking for things in menus and waiting for them to load. There was nothing wrong with analog gauges on a dash. In fact, part of luxury is an air of class, which is something a digital dash doesn't offer. I don't mind an infotainment screen or a screen between two dials, but vehicles nowadays have gone much too far and rely on screens too often.
So ... apart from the massive screen, I fully agree with the rest of this "baby" Caddy.

Ok, so I think you are being a little too skeptical about why Cadillac is using newtonmeters rather lb-ft with their secondary badging. They are making a push to become a global brand, thus using newton meters-instead of lb-ft makes a lot of sense.
Also, going forward, Cadillac wants you to be able to compare the power of gas vehicles with electric vehicles. Using engine size is pointless because there are zero liters in electric motors so that nomenclature wouldn’t make sense, either.
Now I do wish Cadillac wouldn’t round-up by 50s, but you aren’t going to project a global image by sticking with the English system of measurement, and we don’t use the English system to measure engine size in any case.

To be fair, aren’t there significantly more Cadillac dealerships in the US than any of the Germans or Japanese brands? I mean, you’ll even find dealers in very rural areas across the Midwest. Considering these are reasonably priced, it’s not that surprising to see that it outsells other subcompact luxury SUVs when there’s far more places you can buy them. But when you look at the sales volume for 2023 divided by the number of US dealers, it’s honestly not selling that much more than competitors like the description suggests. In fact, I’d say the reason it outsells the Germans is solely because there’s more places you can buy one and get it serviced for most of the population, not necessarily because it’s a better vehicle than what the competition offers.

Better interior? Are we looking at the same video or is this just a GM-sponsored review? Outside of the awkwardly huge screen, the interior looks straight out of 2014 -- ye olde goat leg style shifter clad in piano black, a control puck (why? you have an enormous touchscreen), door handles that look like they haven't been redesigned since 1998, and even the super-cheapo looking faux-metal trim on doors that used to be all the rage. I mean, happy for GM that these are being moved but is that not just because of other things like incentives
