  • Velebit. I am still visiting those magnificent mountains. A lot of details reminds me of what happened to me there. After so many experiences over years, it is not easy to travel alone ... like I used to when it was my only way. Tin, my younger son travels with me more often, so together we visit this extraordinary wild space. It relieves my pain in the soul ... sadness because those beautiful times are gone. But it's natural. At that time, I was probably half, if not with all my soul, part of that wolf family. No one understood it and those who knew me were used to it, even when I would inadvertently neglect my own family. Seems that only one being was fully aware of it. Lik, that gray wolf who at the end ultimately decided to spend his entire life with me ... to his own end. With wolves in the wild, it is a completely different world and it is a special honor to experience it. I managed to capture a small part about that time with the only amateur camera available, which I could afford at that time with all the frequent travel expenses. This short video is just an extract from a longer one that will describe my relationship with the wolves even more thoroughly.
Although in the harshest setting, deep in the mountains, this humble wolf home provides all the members of this small family with enough warmth and love to survive
all the troubles of life. Existence and survival. When the wolf couple survives the winter, it's time for a new life. Even before the summer, there is a lot of activity in a hidden litter. And the mountain winds successfully hide all the sounds and noises of naughty cubs and their parents' possible quarrels ... whimpering because of the pain of growing teeth, inflated bellies when overeating, parasites when changing their diet as they stop sucking, or mum's rejection by growling because their teeth hurt her tits. As soon as cubs grow up a bit, the mother no longer feeds on milk, but brings in prey that is half digested and offers young and later larger pieces to nibble on their own. Then there is a loud fight over the food that have been brought to them. They growl and fight between each other, creating the status relations of each other. While the father mostly stays "home", the mother goes "shoping" because who knows if he knows what to find. Then especially if cubs sleep the wolf hides the remaining food in the den, burying it as a reserve for later, which often fails because they are often really capable of finding it. It is hard to imagine such a caring and self-sacrificing mother what a she was at such a time. She keeps her offspring as the greatest treasure possible. And she still has the strength to maintain a peaceful, secure home for her entire family. It turns out that the male is lazy, but I have seen him, even when his cubs grow up and over a year old, throw out everything he has in his stomach, whenever he meets them. Proud of his offspring. An essential part of the upbringing is allowing them to climb on him, pulling him by the tail, biting his ears as if they were all allowed. In fact, such the father pretends to be more of an authority on the offspring because of order and upbringing, and in his heart, tenderness is not lacking at all. Parents, because of their busyness and concern for the cubs, rarely have opportunities for their own peace, desires and passions, and often inadvertently fall into short-term conflict. The male thus turns out to be even more rude, especially when he first takes a meal before them all... but in fact he is a guarantee of their safety and protection and needs to be satiated, ready, strong and capable to defend them of any risk. With the growth of the wolf, the need to expand the space and eventually seek better hunting grounds comes, so the danger is more pervasive. Danger from people. And indeed, looking for me who they thought was an uncle at the time or some close relative that helps ... Lacha was injured.
Hunters shot her. I tried my best in the coming fall and winter and for the whole next year to help them survive. I would bring them food when traveling from home when ever I had the opportunity. I was not aware that I was actually feeding the bear family either, because wolves no longer needed my help. They have already become independent.
Years later, wandering those mountains alone and often exhausted, I would notice a kind of unreal scenes, the outlines of figures in the forms of rocks, shadows in leaves, clouds ... hoping, however, subconsciously that I would meet them.
I didn't mind that they doubted why I was behaving like that, although I was in fact really sorry about that. By the signs of their presence I always knew where they were, but in every way I would avoid possible encounters in order to search for me again and then run into the wrong people. And today I'm happy to see any fresh sign of presence ... that's all I need.
It is a success if only one survived.

Velebit. Navru sjećanja ... i emocije. No i to je prirodno.
Srećom, jedan mali dio uspio sam zabilježiti tada jedinom dostupnom amaterskom kamerom koju sam stalno nosio uz sebe.
Preživljavanje i opstanak.
I pred ljeto postaje živo u skrivenom leglu. Roditelji, zbog zauzetosti i brige zbog nestašluka mladunaca rijetko imaju prilike za vlastiti mir, želje i strasti a često nehotice upadnu u kratkotrajan sukob. Znao sam da me prate.

This is truly incredible to see this wolf family dealing with the reality of living in that hidden environment which, I believe, you chose, to keep them safe from hunters. Well you certainly did a remarkable job not only by doing this but documenting this time in your life with a camera. It doesn't really matter what kind of camera was available to you at the time. It's the footage that counts and it really is remarkable what scenes you captured; scenes that are fantastic memories of a time that is no longer possible in this day and age. Glad to hear that. Poor bears in Kuterevo beneath the mountain. There are hunting stands all over around that wait for wild bears attracted by those fenced in the refugee center. The same it is today all around the National park ... on the borders riffles are waiting ... many video uploads posted even on this network prove that illegal activity.
I fell myself so sad and sorry for changes that happen on that magnificent mountain bring unrepairable damage mostly.
Through the last years I am trying hard to grab any possible chance to visit those well known places. Less and less wildlife can be seen. Even the climate changed so there is not as much snow in winters as it used to be in the past. I am very glad that I managed to spend so much time in the wild and succeeded to film at least some footage. The experience gained can't be measured and compared with any school. After some years I understood that there are things that cannot be studied by dividing and cutting what is one entity. Those things are not included in university books. Apparently wonderful documentaries are actually unnatural, made by causing stress on the environment and pursuing an objective. However, the complex way of living of some animals, and wolves are special in this sense, can be understand only by plain observation, which is nearly impossible. You succeeded in this by dedicating so much of Your life. That is real biology, and You have my full respect and appreciation.

Truly honest words and thank you for them.
I greatly appreciate such a comment.
What I have to thank you the most is understanding ... by all means, especially for the efforts I invested into those magnificent creatures to raise them up so that they would succeed to survive in the wild themselves alone. I started filming my experience to save it for the future although it wasn't planned but I was aware that some day it will be worth a fortune because something like that will hardy be repeated ever again. I tried to contact so called experts and scientists but I simply had no time waiting to find nor organize them. I doubt anyone would join me and risk that much as I did and for so long period of time. Alone with whole lot of responsibility for what I started. But it turned to be the only and the best possible way to complete the idea.
And yes, this is real biology what even most of the scientists will never be aware of.
There is much more I'd like to share just for the sake of wolves and their survival but believe I didn't find the experts who could ask me real or deeper question ...
There is still more I have to upload ... I hope, I'll be able to share more adventures and knowledge gained on my own experience in this domain. You're welcome.

Glad to hear about the wolves there though honestly , I am sorry in a way for all what they can get there isn't promising. They need wilderness and Europe in general doesn't have it nor ever will. ... except if nature won't start sorting things out and cleans all the environment. Seems like some signs of that are quite obvious. We have forgotten whose rules have to be respected but the reality will soon teach us all.

@@PavleBalenovic much water will flow before all those involved will accept the wolf back in this country. So far so good, they have been here over a year. Many say now is the time to reall connect all the little reserves so that deer, boar and wolves can go about their business. Much work has already been done but the 2008 crisis put a stop to that way of thinking. But the wolves came anyway 🤫😄.

    • @PavleBalenovic
      @PavleBalenovic  Před 4 lety

I know that people in the countries like yours are above the level of many regions around.
Because of many things modern life offers today most of them will remain closer to simple, primitive way of living not even needing much intelligence. Although in my country wolves are protected by law as endangered species the reality doesn't care much about it. Most do not even understand why would we take care about nature in general, wildlife, wolves especially.
It was yesterday when we were shooting them as pest. I read in books that in UK they killed their last wolf in 17th century ... from that time they are trying to introduce if only a pack back.
But most of damages can't be repaired, ever.
It happens that some of those magnificent species appear unexpected because of many reasons. Disorientated, lost in panic, gone from where they can't find mates to join or simply because climate changed. Animals can see the future better than we and this can be the sign ... or warning.
Through those 18 years spent with Lik there were many interesting details I remember.
Once I was away for whole the month, thousand kilometers from home working on an French movie. (stunt on horses). The production entered into financial problem and together with bad weather that didn't suit for filming the remaining scenes the short meeting was organized to agree what to do. My mother called me on a phone to ask what is going on. I didn't know whether I will stay more or return home and informed her so. She answered ... "No, I know you are coming home to morrow for sure so get ready, pack your bags. "How do you know that ?" ...I asked her.
She said: "Lik is howling all the day long and even your friends in adjacent cafe have heard him howling, knowing what that meant ... same happened many times before.
From almost attacking me when I brought the cub home, through all those years, it seams like my neighbors became almost proud having the wolf in the area.
In a way I miss them now although I do not have the right to feel so
for we must all be aware where do they really belong.
      Thanks my friend.

U vrijeme kad sam posljednje Likovo štene vraćao u divljinu (kako opisuje film "The Wolfman- Dnevnik Pavle Balenovića"" na ovom kanalu")

Similar things happened in the past with all European countries. They all destroyed their nature so now they can only cry for what they have lost ... lost once forever. There is no way back.
