  • I still often remember how many times I tried to approach that magnificent mountain during the winter. The mountain named Velebit. Respected by the experienced strongly and forever. I have always greatly appreciated the wild creatures that manage to survive all those extremely harsh winters. (Pavle Balenovic)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------... Još uvijek se često sjetim koliko sam puta zimi pokušao prići toj veličanstvenoj planini. Imenom Velebit.

tobože krenul u izvidnicu, provjeriti svoje stare staze onak bez obaveza ...udahnuti zrak ...
A tekućine kak znaš, nikad dosta.
Čim sredim snimke objavil bum ih pa buš ih videl tu.
A ja?
... vrijeme nam svima opasno prolazi... a godine čine svoje no noge me ipak nekak još služe.

I can see that wolves are certainly capable of surviving in such harsh conditions, but what of a man? It seems to me that this man must be insane to try to film anything, let alone wolves during an intense blizzard. But then, this is an extraordinary man who never lets a little detail like his camera freezing, from completing what he sets out to do. I am completely in awe of you, my dear friend. Velebit needs to see you once again before it's too late. PLEASE MAKE IT SO. Time passes much too quickly.

It rained for days and then one windy night I fell asleep tired in a sleeping bag, wet feet leaning on the wolf ... The Lik's wet fur was not so cold or at least it seemed so to me. Dawn dawned white and the wind was much stronger.
It seems to me that I was not very normal, especially since I stayed for another four days in that storm. And that is mostly because the wolves were with me and Lik and did not leave us. It was sad to leave them ... in fact, we barely made it out alive. Luckily we found my old Land Rover and by some miracle the engine started. The way home was not easy at all. We barely descended from Velebit and the long road through the snow obstacles towards Zagreb was just waiting for us. I would have thought it was a dream but the camera filmed it until it lasted and then stopped responding from the cold. And here are the shots I saved.

What I forgot to mention...if the camera froze, what about your hands. And what about attaching chains to the wheels in that blizzard? You are really lucky that you didn't freeze your fingers.

Interesting but through all those wanderings I have never worn gloves for years. I just didn't need them. My pocket was enough to warm my hands. And when you mention putting on snow chains it was a real torment and horror. I remember putting the chains on the rear wheels first and off I went but the car didn’t go where I wanted it to. Only then did the chains need to be moved from the rear to the front wheels. Luckily the jeep has all-wheel drive so it’s possible to do that. But as I worked, a new problem arose. Lik was lying down and napping, almost buried in the snow all that time when I was changing chains. Wind was strong but not as much as when you lay down. When I tried to start him so that I could get him in the truch, he growled and almost attacked me angrily for disturbing his warm bed. He didn't want really to go anywhere and he was fine there. Still, I managed to force him to jump through the back door. There he soon became overheated and began to pant like a dog in the heat. And we finaly set off, but there was a long ascent through the snow, which is getting deeper and deeper higher we reach. Behind us the snow remained black from the unburned oil in the exhaust of the engine. And we came to that road where I was banging on the windows shouting to Lik: we got out, Lik! Night has already fallen, darkness comes earlier because the days are shorter at that time . Public roads are usualy closed in such the circumstances but I had to continue and fight against the winter the whole night through. At dawn we arrived to Zagreb.

Well, my dear, I did freeze my fingers, even with gloves on and after a little while the skin that got frozen peeled off and my fingers have been sensitive ever since. So as a Canadian living in a harsh climate during long winters and you living in a warm climate in Croatia, all I can say is that you are one tough dude. Putting chains on and off must have been the ultimate challenge. And Lik, I can still see him lifting his head and peering out from under a pile of snow...priceless. I still can't believe you stayed there for 4 more days, but then, that Velebit mountain has captivated you and will continue to do so until you die. At least when you decided to return to Zagreb, you both arrived safe but not sorry, having lived through conditions that no ordinary man would have endured, but as I said before, you are no ordinary man.

After a few days of heavy rain, I fell asleep covered with a tent wing ... all wet and exhausted from long walks. Luckily in the morning everything turned to ice and my wet cover hardened. To my surprise, everything was white. I panicked and feared that I would find an old car, and if I succeeded, I would be able to start it because of the cold.
... still I do not know how did I manage to survive those days. Perhaps because wolves were around us ... Lik and me. This was why I decided 4 more days in that storm,

Sva ta zima, hladnoća, vjetar je zapravo ono što čuva divljinu i prirodu općenito.

Oh yes , "Crni" how I named him. (Blacky, because he used to be the darkest one from all the cubs). There is a lot more to be said to discribe that clip decently. I risked my life. Because of his presence I decided to stay those four nights around that place. Nights were real hell and darkness lasted far to long. The last day at noon I decided to find my old truck and get the uper levels of the mountain and hit the road towards west. Lik didn't want to leave that place but he also didn't want to remain without me.
