Charlotte, North Carolina Has A Homeless Problem Too

  • How big does the homeless population have to get here before things change?
Downtown Charlotte. Certainly not the worst downtown you could live in or enjoy on a night out. There’s shootings and murders here just like there are in every other major metro city in the nation. But it could be far far worse.
And while there aren’t large homeless encampments here like you’ll see on the west coast, if you walk around downtown Charlotte, you’ll see homeless people all over the place. I was in Charlotte recently and spent some time looking around to see how bad things are here with the homeless population. On a quick one square block walk around downtown, I saw at least 5 people sleeping outside.
Charlotte has announced a plan to wipe out homelessness for good within 5 years. Recently, the city dismantled a large homeless encampment on the fringes of downtown and helped transition some of its homeless into shelters and drug rehab. It’s estimated that there are around 3,000 people living on Charlotte streets or in its shelters. That’s 1,000 more than there were even a year ago. 3,000 people is far less than the estimated 70,000 homeless in Los Angeles, but it’s still a very big number.
Mecklenburg County, where Charlotte is, plans to spend $350 million to eradicate its homeless problem through counseling, outreach, rehab and affordable housing.
I spent some time talking with a few homeless people in Charlotte. The overall theme was troubling. All of the homeless people I talked to had their own story why they are currently on the streets. But none of them had a plan on how to get OFF the streets. All of them agreed that drugs and booze were a big part of the problem, as was finding a place where they could afford to live. Honestly, it didn’t sound like they WANTED to get off the streets. It was their livelihood now. Here are pieces of those conversations.

A truly beautiful soul. Being homeless is no joke. It's scary and damaging to your whole life. You're so vulnerable and it's so easy for you to dig a whole for yourself in every single way possible.

Homelessness is like permanent camping. Only you stink and have to constantly move ur shit. I was homeless for a bit years ago. If its temporary its not bad. A few months or whatever. Like its nice with no bills or stress to worry about bills or bullshit that comes with havin a house. U have soup kitchens and stuff where u dont have to worry about ur next meal. Places you can go that give u food. Not great food but food. Go to day labor places and earn money that way. Then pay for ur drugs and you really can jus sit back n chill! But that life is scary and its not even really a life. And that black dude hes got the right idea ..... He wana be an ironworker. Hes got a plan! Truth is there is no hope for the vast, vast majority of the homeless. We should be working to reduce future homelessness, which means focusing on affordable housing, increased wages, drug prevention and mental health care.

    • @bansheezs
      @bansheezs Před 2 lety +8

Its not about producing affordable housing, but about allowing all housing to be built in general. Too many cities limit how many homes are built because nobody wants a new apartment complex going up in their yard. Increase the supply and prices will drop. Just get rid of all the legislation that stops new homes.
Wages are competitive to area, people wouldn't work at a job that didn't earn enough to support them, they would just leave to a cheaper area. Notice how no of these homeless live in rural cheap areas, they could easily get a min wage job there and afford rent, but they don't

Unfortunately this is what any human gets if has some mental health issues. This immediately lets the society put you off the track and unleashes discrimination. Also their relatives avoid them, society is scared of insane individuals. There are no more hospitals for them. First off I advise any individual to have a rest as frequent and possible, stay positive and kind, avoid exposed to hatred, determinative reflections, do not work too much, even if you don't earn enough. Be humble. Humility is like a fuse inside wirings, it blows off preventing entire circuit burnout, the same thing for individuals experiencing troubles.

I have a disability that affects my ability to work, but I don’t qualify for disability benefits because I have a condo. So basically, the choices are try to work in a world of able bodied people with the expectation that you are also able bodied, or give up your home and go on services. I have chosen to work even though I’m in pain, because I fear ending up like this poor woman in the system. By the grace of God, I’ve made my way up to a flexible job I’m good at. I’ve learned a LOT through the years! I’ve learned about homelessness, disability, society, and the “system.” I’ve learned about the disconnect between healthy people and disabled people. I’ve learned about human empathy and compassion, and about selfishness and pride. Mostly I’ve learned never to tell anyone I’m disabled (Shhhh) and to pretend there’s no pain and act like I’m fine. Or else! People don’t want to have to acknowledge that there are so many suffering. It makes them uncomfortable. Voters are concerned with the economy so they can be comfortable, but they ignore all the injustices of the mental health system and government housing agencies. If only those who aren’t suffering would reach out and try to help those who are! It’s going to take a lot more than money to put a dent in this problem. The entire government system needs to be dismantled and rebuilt. Child services, family services, welfare and housing agencies need to be completely removed and replaced by private organizations and volunteer services run by people who actually care. Legislation has to change, and medical insurance needs to be offered to anyone who is injured or disabled until they can be rehabilitated enough to work. Debt and collection agencies shouldn’t be allowed to sue homeless people. I could go on and on, but I have to get back to work.

I used to take walks in Uptown Charlotte and did a photo collage which told the story of how many become homeless. Charlotte is becoming overrun by unethical developers that are taking over many of the properties in Charlotte. These developers drive up the rent to force the original tenants out. If they can't force the tenants out through raising rent, they just give 30-day notices out to entire apartment complexes. That happened to me, and I was forced to live in an unsafe area. Many times, people who are faced with these situations end up homeless due to a lack access to adequate resources, money and connections.

That could bring big trouble on her from pushers and addicts and gangs who terrorize and extort "taxes" from homeless.
All she wants to start is "safe and secure". That could be right where she is with a fence around an residents serving voluntary guard shifts. A simple breakfast like coffee and a bagel. Maybe have a mobile showering truck stop by once a week. Then she'd have a shot at employment.
This lady's not going to be in a position to be considered by any landlord (other than a pimp) for ever. Her claim of brain damage from an accident is evident in her speech. Nick great video.. Thank you for taking a moment to talk to that nice lady to show other how it really is.. Despite the difficulty that lady has in her life with issues beyond her control and her difficulty explaining everything she could have not been more bang on right.. From the explanation of "supposed" helpful services available that are a false front, to safe housing that allows an adult to have the autonomy to live their own life, make their own decisions in safe reasonable housing and dignity even though they may not be perfect, all the way to the cycle of our criminally operated justice for profit system..This lady was a true exemplification of the cracks in our society and she is just one who fell though and might make it out.. You almost have to step back for a moment to clearly see what she was truly saying...Maybe if our federal systems and state systems worked to help with compassion for each and everyone's individuals needs to provide options, instead of creating sky high priced housing, land expenses and permitting that is unsustainable, and put the moneys into improving our country and systems instead of lining their own profit portfolio through lies and deceit... Trust me I've seen Federal "entity" spending at is most shocking through my 20+years of work and business ownership..The ability is there, but the REAL understanding and motivation is not there to make a reasonable solution for the majority people struggling in our country alone.. I've tried to make inexpensive innovative housing for years, but have been rejected by one reason or code or legal aspect..Each and everyone of us are truly only one step from being on the streets too.. I myself have had properties straight stolen, been falsely accused of absurd crimes, had government and city and county sources shut down multiple of my business literally at swat gun point, my bank accounts un-explaniably stolen/closed with no recourse in 2020, been falsely imprisoned by corruption 2021, and am so fed up of struggling to make a little money to have it not make a dent in Denvers extreme rent or ownership prices most of my adulthood no matter how many businesses/solutions/efforts I try.. Something needs to change and I know what but can't speak against the narrative otherwise... Thanks Nick I hope your videos reach many.

Wow great vid,Nick! I didn't know that homelessness was that bad in Charlotte!
Lived there back in 1982, & I guess it was "covered up... under the rug" for the public not to see.
In 2012 , I moved to Raleigh/Durham and I could see the homeless everywhere! Now there are "groups " of them "panhandling ' for money @ stop lights!
I don't have an answer to help them.
Giving them a few bucks is just like what the cities & states do...it just enables them to continue as they are...lost in a system that doesn't care.
I was "middle class "back in the 80's
...now I am "upper poverty " AND I WORK 12 HOUR DAYS AT A FACTORY MAKING MORE THAN I DID BACK IN THE 80'S...
we may ALL be on the streets before long...I hope not.

I work at Roof Above. ( formerly Urban outreach and Men's shelter) We are Charlotte's largest shelter..... There is zero encouraging of the men to save for apartments. We basically are too busy just taking a roll of guest and reporting it to HUD to keep our funding. And it's funny, we can't even really enforce rules because our management needs the homeless there because the numbers bring in the cash..... Shelters suffer a conflict of interest. We focus on making the guest as comfortable as can be instead of encouraging them to get homes. The shelters and liberal government just encourages homelessness.

I'm at the part of the so called "interview" where he's asking about getting a job to get off the street. It's So much more to it than that. If he/she's homeless, barely functioning/surviving on the street with no real support from Roof, Above (formerly Urban Ministries) and Rooms in the Inn, etc (which I heard has changed since 2020) HOW will a job help? They need emotional/ mental health support, consistent self care, a place to get Proper rest, clean, SAFE, rodent free housing. Misappropriation of funds by some organizations, City of Charlotte continually building "luxury housing" that only the rich can afford. If they took 25% of the cost of ONE of those buildings, they could build housing units and eradicate homelessness. But I've learned first hand it's all about funding and numbers. Had a conversation about this with former employee of Urban Ministries. I said to her, "seems without the homeless, everyone here as well as other organizations would be jobless and on the road to homelessness themselves." They don't care, it's all about numbers to get funding. Taking the cheap route instead of quality supplies, while fattening their pockets. The food they served I wouldn't servey worst enemy. People going into diabetic shock, seizures, fainting etc during lunch time at soup kitchen...soggy salad, old sandwiches where you couldn't put mayo b/c the bread whipped due to sticky cheese...soup that tasted like liquid salt...and no staff cared. The men's shelter took over and serve whatever they want. And don't get me started on the churches that hosted rooms in the Inn. Most were so judgemental, offensive, rude, served cold food, would turn off lights before "lights out", would pray AT instead of for, said if homeless accepted Jesus, would not be homeless...
Yes I experienced it for 3 months before 2 employees of Urban Ministries had a secret meeting then caused management to cancel RITI 2 weeks early, only offering a one way bus ticket out of Charlotte, or a tent & sleeping bag (which they ran out of but continued to offer...smh)
There's So much wrong with how homelessness is handled and change needs to happen and now! Covid has only mad an already horrific situation worse. WHY wait for an infestation of rats in the encampment? Why not put them in those hotels pre-covid? They act like it's their personal money and homes being used. In my own struggle to find housing, AND a job that will cover housing earning minimum of 18./hr (while min wage is Still $7.25) I am reminded daily that this system is broken and no real efforts are being made for change. When you speak on it, they deny you assistance, attempt to devalue you, make you do what they say "or else". It's crazy and ironic how I was denied the opportunity to apply for work at Urban Ministries when the website clearly noted open positions on Every department, I've recently been interviewed for employment with Inlivian, and recently SocialServ. 211 is a joke, I called to get housing info and guy didn't have a clue. I gave Him resources!!! Smh...I need his job.
QC Metro interviewed me on my experience in 2021. Never published or aired. I had too much to say with receipts to prove this system is failing the homeless and displaced. Things won't change until the warped mindsets of those in control, change. Employees getting car windows busted and tires punctured...it was crazy to witness. But perspective hits ....You know it's bad when a worker who does assessments, refuses to give a client her voucher, refuses to answer her calls and lies about being available to meet her but has been seen on the property. And wonder why folk are frustrated, angry and have no trust for they system that's supposed to help. But again, as I've said over and over to the woman in charge at the time, if it weren't for the homeless, y'all wouldn't have a job. In time, I Will publicly share my story, with an expectation of Change.

One thing I like about it is how easy and quick it is to get out of it and into the country. In Gaston county where I live, I'm seeing a lot more homelessness and panhandling. I've been homeless twice in my life. The first time in Phoenix, AZ the second in NC close to Charlotte. Let me just say this, the homelessness situation is increasing everywhere, especially in major cities across the US. I've come to learn that people find themselves in that situation for many different reasons. Some totally out of their control. The real question is, do you want to continue this lifestyle or do you want definite change? While homeless I did not once go hungry nor did I live on the street. I lived in shelters and went to churches and soup kitchens for food. One of the shelters served 3 meals a day! There are resources out there, but you have to put down your pride and just seek help! I learned that a great majority of these folks choose this life and don't want anything better. I just couldn't imagine living this way for the rest of my life. I prayed that God would protect me and guide me through it, and He did! I just had to be patient and trust in Him. I realize some places don't have shelters and it makes it very difficult. But you just might have to re-locate to get the jumpstart you need. God doesn't want any of us living this way, so please look for His guidance and he will help you through it, trust me. 🙏

This is an interesting video. I have to give you credit for going into this and speaking with the people on the streets. I have had to deal with homeless or squatter types people. It is hard. This is showing mental health issues which is what I have usually had to deal with.
This also shows a deeper issue, this lady talks about going into housing that is not livable. While she might be somewhat unstable she brings up a good point. You can’t just take people off the streets pit the into some sort of sub-standard housing and expect them to bring themselves out of the mind set they are in.
What do we do? Do we spend the money trying to test the mental illness or do we just treat the symptoms by putting people in housing provided by organizations that take money from the feds or local governments that don’t help past that.

Good interviews Nick I've talked to homeless people before some people choose it other people are homeless because of circumstances like losing a job or getting kicked out others have drug problems and alcohol problems mental illness and just can't afford houses jobs and guidance might help solve the issue but i don't think throwing money at homelessness will work. There isn't a one size fits all solution to homelessness every person is different. Good interviews.

If you’ve ever had a family member or a friend that suffers from addiction, then it’s impossible to “help” them. They will steal, lie, compromise your safety, the safety of your children, destroy your tool shed and sell everything in it. So you can’t enable poor behavior nor can you can contribute to the addiction. It’s a horrible place to be.

I developed a formula that reflects life in its purest form and the formula is C=C. What does C=C mean? It means choices equal consequences. Most people don’t think about the consequences of their decisions particularly large decisions, just the choice. If only they would think about the consequences the next day, the next week and the next ten years they would develop of meaningful life and make wise decisions.

I just moved to Charlotte from Seattle. They're probably approaching 20k homeless in ~ 84sq miles. No matter your tolerance or compassion levels, it's pervasive. Charlotte has 3k in almost 300sq miles (obviously mostly downtown). I examined playgrounds for syringes before letting my son play. Addicts would literally be passed out on merry-go-rounds. They'd commit petty crimes to survive, and that takes it's toll when you've got more than 200 per square mile. I'm not conservative, but that's the direction progressive policies are moving towards. Needle handouts dubbed "exchanges," no prosecution of possession of any drug under 3g, and loads of people tolerating it because they think it's inhumane to push rehabilitation on the unwilling.

Bring back Project Self-Sufficiency! A federally assisted program of the 1980s that provided basic HUD housing, DSHS assistance (financial, food, health) and resources (childcare assistance, grants, PT work - no penalties or deductions) to acquire 2 years worth of college education in any field plus about 6 months post transition help. I went through it, got a degree and came out the other side better off. This may exist in other places under different names. Job Corps is limited by age, children and not the same.

Job Corps isn't a better alternative imo especially with the crime, assaults, etc. that go on in a lot of these places. A guy I knew who ran a Discord server suggested this to me who is struggling with various issues and though that was the best suggestion and thank goodness I did some homework and research after the fact and I didn't speak to him or stay in his server ever again after that conversation.
I told a friend of mine this and he was pretty shocked and even recently agreed with me that he was very wrong and foolish to do that during a time when I wasn't thinking clearly.
