Louisville, Kentucky: A Southern City With Lots Of Issues

  • Can Louisville recover from the rioting that happened here?
Louisville Kentucky. A lot of people have never been here before. But everyone knows about it. What is it? Is it fun? Is it clean? Is it all horse racing, whiskey drinking basketball fans? I had to know. So I when I had a chance to stop for a day I was all yes and got off I-64 to spend a day here.
The day I picked for the drive was a really nice one - it was midweek, just before Thanksgiving. It was late morning when I arrived, and the sun was shining bright. The perfect day to grab a bourbon and take a short tour of Louisville, Kentucky!
There’s a debate among people in Kentucky - is this state in the south or the midwest? It’s kinda both if you think about it. It’s sorta southern in places but looks like you’re in the midwest in others. It’s a great state filled with lots of friendly and generous people. The biggest city in Kentucky is Louisville. There’s about 630,000 people here, making it the 29th biggest city in the country. Louisville is about the same size as Memphis and way bigger than Baltimore these days. It’s growing here. Not by a lot, but it’s certainly not shrinking.
Of course you probably know Louisville as the place where they make baseball bats and race horses.
What we’re going to do is drive around downtown Louisville and talk to people who live here. We’ll talk about the good and the bad and what this city is all about. It’s time to get the Deets on Louisville!
Now downtown Louisville has some culture. It’s not going to blow you away with things to do, but you could stay busy here for a weekend I suppose. I mentioned the Louisville slugger factory and museum. That’s downtown. There’s also an arena called the KFC Young Center downtown, but by the time you watch this video it might be called something else. This is where the university of Louisville plays its basketball games. You’ll see it on the drive.
Outside of downtown is where the Kentucky Derby is located at a place called Churchill Downs. Here’s what that looks like. No one really talks about the Derby until 2 weeks out from race day, which is always in early May. A lot of people in Louisville go to the Derby or throw big parties the day of the race. The Derby kinda brings a normally segregated city together for one afternoon so that’s good.
To the south of downtown it’s kinda rough, and west of downtown is SUPER rough. Like shootings every night. You don’t want to go to west Louisville. I did go to west Louisville and I showed you what that looks like in another video. Cause I’m very brave.
The east side of Louisville is average - kinda middle class and sorta safe. There’s a lot of bars, restaurants and shopping out that way, especially on Bardstown Road. North of Louisville is where all of the kinda rich people live, and the far northern fringes of Louisville is where the SUPER rich people live. Papa John lives in the far north end of Louisville. He makes pizzas.
Here’s a map that my friend Chris made which helps explain the different sides of town. He lives in Louisville.
Most of the growth is taking place here on the far eastern fringes of Louisville as well as across the Ohio River in southern Indiana. Cause it’s cheaper up there.
There’s some decent jobs in Louisville. There are lots of good factory jobs. Ford, GE and Amazon have factories, and there’s some good healthcare jobs. This is also the hub for UPS, so there’s a lot of logistics jobs.
I found downtown to be mostly clean and there weren’t very many homeless people around. I also thought it was pretty safe walking around downtown at night. But I’m sure that changes week by week.

Wish you’d driven through Old Louisville, the Highlands, or the Germantown/Merriwether/Schnitzelburg areas. We have the largest neighborhood of Victorian homes in the country and largest number of shotgun houses in the country as well. Quite a bit of DIY flavor in those “central” parts of the city in terms of housing and renovation. Also worth mentioning is the food scene, I think Louisville is actually a food-town, especially if you go off the beaten path. Great video! Y’all come back again some time! 👋🤠

I agree, much of the beauty and culture is on the outskirts of downtown, Crescent Hill in addition to what you've mentioned. A lot more going on than downtown. Largest Olmstead Park system in the country. There's a 100 mile bicycle loop around the city that's under development, around 50 miles completed. Worth a mention.

Hey, I'm pleased that downtown doesn't look any worse than that. It was nice to see. My peeps left in Louisville lead me to believe that downtown was pretty much gone. Growing up, we had The Galleria, then Fourth Street Live. I always considered KY the northern most southern state. Lots of Southern hospitality! Louisville is most definitely a blue spot in a red state. It's always been that way, and I don't see that ever changing.

My issue with downtown Louisville is that all the East-West streets were rather wide with several lanes of fast driving cars. It slightly diminished the appeal of walking around, and it seemed like things right across the street were overly far away. And 4th street seemed to be the only North-South street that had any pedestrian life to it. It wasn't a total mess, but it looks like things were built with the expectation it would be. Definitely liked the waterfront park near the big 4 bridge. It was packed with families and people just enjoying the outdoors, on both the KY and Indiana sides actually. Was also in Memphis 2 days prior, but obviously that's not the most glorious comparison. I hope it can some day have the grandeur of the similar-geography Cincinnati.

I grew up in Louisville. It’s a nice town and great place to grow up, but no plans on ever moving back (now in Colorado). A lot of the issues are downtown where we rarely if ever went. The suburbs are great and location to other great cities is top tier. One person told me “It’s a great place to live, not so much to visit.” Sums it up pretty well. I will say the bourbon tours are really fun for people not from the area. Great work as always Nick!

Mindya, stay out of the gang/drug game and you'll have no problem.....not even from people actually IN the gang/drug game. I think most of the homicides were gang related committed by people out of town that would dip in and dip out.

Like most other places homicides are almost entirely drug/gang related or domestic violence related. Random homicides are extremely rare. So as long as you're not selling drugs and/or in a gang, and you don't have a violent family member living with you, your chances of being murdered in Louisville are near zero.

Other things to see is our parks: Iroquois Park & Cherokee Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted. He was famous for Central Park, the U.S. Capitol Grounds and he also designed approx 15 miles of our parkways many in the west end of downtown... I live in Somerset Kentucky. We have Lake Cumberland(I think it used to be considered the biggest man-made lake at one time? and I know we were called the biggest houseboat capital in the world as well.) I lved near Burnside ( I think we were the birthplace of the Boy scouts)
I've been here about 30 years. I've been to Louisville,.. maybe twice?? That I can remember 😂
    I'm originally from South Carolina.
I grew up in Columbia and most big cities are a lot alike!!
I'm a big horse lover so Louisville has always been a place I would like to do more traveling to, to see the horses and the races!!
I've been to Lexington and the horse races once!
I loved your Kentucky Derby hat and your Louisville song 😂
Somerset is about 3 hours away from me.
I'm also part of a "FishTube" CZcams family here on this platform. We enjoy the aquarium Hobby!
We have a big event coming to Louisville in July that is called the "Triple Crown" with three of the biggest fish organizations/Clubs/associations... putting on the event!! So I will be traveling to the convention center and hopefully getting to meet some of the friends that I've made over the past two years!!
I live in one of the most rural areas and of course people here are always afraid of Louisville, thinking that it's too rough!! But most folks out here have lived here their whole life in the hollers 😁❤️ Great salt of the earth people though!!!
I just recently learned about the disco ball thing 💃 and the birthplace of duct tape✨😁
Our little area has recently gone "wet"as far as alcohol. I've been working in a little store part-time and have been learning a lot about bourbon and what makes it so unique to our area! ( which is pretty cool!) I'm not a drinker myself.... But the tradition and history is very fascinating on how and why bourbon is so special to our area! Our blue limestone Rock, the spring water that filters through our mountains, soil, weather and people make the perfect combination !
Learning about what makes a bourbon a $1,500 shot is mind-blowing. I've heard it can be because the barrel itself is very special and might have sat in the one place in the warehouse or wherever top secret location... that the sun and the whiskey God's might have shown on it just right and a guy walks by and sticks a straw in it and gives it his seal of approval. Bada Bing Bada Boom.....🥃 A Star is Born 😂✨🥃
Thanks for the video and the interviews!!
I'm looking forward to my trip and hoping to do a little sightseeing myself!! You gave me a lot of ideas and help shed some light on Louisville and its City!!
Kentucky is a beautiful place overall and I love living here!
I do believe the pandemic hurt a lot of folks here including myself! Especially in the rural areas where there's not a lot of jobs anyway. I do know people who drive everyday to work in Louisville.
I appreciate you sharing and I hope you have a wonderful day and look forward to see some more of your adventures!!🙏❤️✨🥃🤗🌁🛣️⚾🏀🐎💃

Speaking as a 62-year-old native, I love Louisville, but as you said, it's a Southern City with lots of issues, and I certainly agree with you. Unfortunately, our last three mayors seem to think that we do not need nor deserve adequate police protection, despite the fact that violent crime, carjacking, and record setting gunshot victims have all been on the rise in recent years. Moreover, this is more than just the result of covid, or the Breonna Taylor incident, it speaks to a broader national trend of big city mayors following an agenda of liberal progressivism that seeks to tolerate urban crime, foster homelessness, and placate the voters with false promises. In my humble opinion, one need only look at "The United States Conference of Mayors" to see that this is all an orchestrated part of Americas managed decline. Sad but true.

I feel that if Nick (creator of the video) was to faint, and there be people from west and northeast Louisville around him, the people from west would assist him while the people from northeast would look away and continue on with their day. Aside from Ford (2 manufacturing plants) GE Appliance Park and government jobs (Big FBI regional office), one big employer not mentioned is Humana Health Care, one of the largest health insurers in the country. Also Humana has a large tech presence in Louisville, though many of the tech workers are from India and few American programmers and other tech staff. The same thing is true for General Electric, where they have many Indians working in there IT department. Most of the IT work here in Louisville is sourced through IT services companies, so actual IT jobs are not advertised as much as non-IT Jobs, though if your diligent, you'll find a few. I've lived in Louisville for going on 22 years now and was a tech transplant to work at Humana, with an IT services company to work on a project at Humana, and it is a great place to raise a family. Worked at Humana for about 9 months and moved on to their rival Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield. There is definitely Tech, mostly in Information Technology and IT services, but not too many innovators in hard tech, liked one would find in the Silicon Valley or North Carolina's Research Triangle.

      Slowly changing.
That's because people are stuck in the past and they think the jobs that they had back in the seventies and sixties are coming back. Most of my relatives worked in the factories back in the 60, 70s and eighties but unfortunately my cousins and people imagination if they were not prepared and did not go to college those same middle class jobs were gone by the time we came of working age.
Another thing I've noticed is that people get good jobs up there and they generally die out of them people aren't usually trying to transfer or grow because there aren't that many big companies or big Paying jobs unless you are in that environment to be exposed to them and the hiring agents.
My mother tried to come back to Louisville previously aftpreviously after living in Atlanta for several years and having a master's degree in computer science and having worked at HP and adult and it's and the Hiring manager was intimidated and refused to hire her. She saw my mother's credentials and her resume and said that she wouldn't be happy in the job or that she would leave and if they couldn't pay her what she was really worried and made up every single excuse on why not to hire her. This is after the recruiter said that she was a great fit for the job and possibly overqualified. Luckily she was later able to get a high paying job with Jefferson County schools teaching computer science and business paying very high.
But I do see that they are working to attract and build a computer programming IT culture there just slowly Louisville really should be on par with Nashville at this time but because of the mindset of some people it has not progressed as quickly or as rapidly or as high as it should. Too many people are content with low manual jobs at UPS and other places like that because it is so low cost of living you can work these jobs and still survive and be considered middle class.

I drive through downtown to and from work every day and the pan handling isn't much worse than it used to be. There are more people doing it because the homeless population is high due to covid, the housing market being ridiculous, and the whole eviction/rent crisis

I was homeless back in the early 2000s in Louisville KY, I wonder if the St John center and the homeless collation still exist. Speaking about panhandling, when I was there I didn't see any panhandlers there and tents when I was there we either stayed at the salvation army on Breckenridge or we would sleep in one of the parks (I stayed at the park at Mohammed Ali Ave and Breckenridge. I loved Louisville KY

Where at??? Outside of the West End, it ain't that Bad! (Maybe Iriquios possibly on the South side) Lived there for 2 years. Honestly, it ain't that Bad! Unless you're looking for trouble. Plus it's CHEAP to live there! (Lived off Dixie Hwy, near PRP) Used to be VERY cheap rent out there when I lived there.
