Unboxing Northern California: What It's Like Living in Northern California

  • Is Northern California all homeless people?
Is Northern California all forest fires?
Is Northern California all farms and rednecks and snobby rich people?
We’ll answer those questions and a whole lot more. So it’s time to get in our Tesla and fire up a fatty. We’re gonna unbox Northern California everyone!
Oh. Look at this - it’s another homeless encampment. You’ll find a lot of those up here in northern california. In some parts of this region, seems like everyone’s homeless. You can understand why - it’s super expensive here, and California has the highest cost of living of ANY state. There’s more people in relative poverty here in California than any other place in the US.
But many of these people aren’t homeless because they can’t afford rent. Many are addicts, have mental illness, or just want to live without rules. And this state encourages it. Northern California is going through a big change right now, and it’s not a good change. That’s why there’s a lot of people leaving this part of the state. Many will never come back.
But Northern California is more than just homeless people, forest fires, drug users and entitlement. There’s pretty beaches, snowcapped mountains, rednecks and Asians. Lots and lots of Asians. Not very many asian rednecks though. That’s a shame.
Northern California is quite a unique place, and you might be thinking about moving here one day. I think that’s a terrible idea, but I’m here to help nonetheless. To get a complete look at Northern California, and understand this area, we need to visit each part of this part of this state so we know what’s what, where’s where and who’s who.
There might be a mini debate as to where Northern California begins, but I think it’s fair to draw the line here right at Santa Cruz. Anything else lower along the coast is widely considered central California. Fresno certainly is Central California, right? So it’s these 48 counties that make up the Northern third of this state.
Therefore, this is Northern California, or NoCal as people call it around here. As you can see there’s a lot to discover. There’s about 15 million people in this area.

Retiring boomers drove up the home prices, but there's little in the way of jobs so you have wealthy boomers, then everyone else. I grew up in "real" N Cali. The closest you got to my hometown was the 1 sec mention of Placerville. The Bay area has 0 to do with N Cali. But as you mentioned that's debatable. I moved to Southern Missouri in 2021, and found your videos after I made the move... But everything you say about the 2 places is highly accurate. "You cant afford it" is exactly the #1 reason I left. The unbelievably procrastinated water issue in the western US is a giant problem, and a huge reason for a lot of the problems. They need a moratorium in the building departments all across the western US, and need to scale back all housing infrastructure. Farming in the valley is more important than all the tech jobs that have ever existed there. But the leadership does not understand that. Tech jobs can exist literally anywhere... Farmland is being sacrificed for this in the most shortsighted approach possible. Tougher farming opportunities = Long term inflation across the board.

But, seriously, couldn't you make these videos in just about any town, anywhere by cherry-picking specific spots? I mean, if I spent enough time, I could drive around my city, take a few vids of the lowest of the low places, and present my city as the scuzziest place in the universe. I'm not suggesting that you're being disingenuous AT ALL, nor am I minimizing the problem. I just think that perspective can be radically skewed based on selectivity. Omg! That guy you had on needs to be part of the NorCal tourism board. I’ve never heard redneck so much in a video. One of the draws to the northern most part of CA is the beauty and remoteness. And there’s a reason they live up there apparently. It’s amazing to see the sections of our country that are one extreme or the other. I noticed more before the last 2 elections than ever as I was traveling the back roads with my Airstream. I’ve lived in Los Gatos, San Jose and Capitola (Santa Cruz). I’m almost scared of being disappointed when I go back in 2023, 19 years later.

Here's another way to look at it. The cost in California can lead to mental health problems. This is because it's so expensive that it makes people so stressed out that it makes them mentally sick. I kid you not. I am now suffering from panick attacks and fears of driving, which is going to cause me to be homeless if I don't get a grip. I obviously have to drive to work. I'm thinking about selling my prius and moving into a van with my six cats ;) I seriously am so sick of trying to keep up with my rent and working constantly, just to live in a crappy one bedroom apartment in Little Saigan. Hi Nick been enjoying your channel for a long time now. Just FYI San Jose is not separate from Silicon Valley. The city claims to be “the capital of Silicon Valley”. Silicon Valley, is defined as Santa Clara County, southern Alameda County, San Mateo County and the Scotts Valley region of Santa Cruz County. I live in East San Jose and TONS of homeless camps here. We are home to the largest homeless camp in USA “the jungle”. You need to bring your cameras to East San Jose. It’s a war zone here in some areas. Not as bad as Oakland though bc they stay a little more hidden. The “jungle” is hidden in an overgrown creek in a shallow canyon but it’s right near downtown. The city thinks they shut it down. Then we have a massive one that the Federal Aviation committee blasted San Jose over bc it’s under the flight path close to the airport. Main problem here is the lefties in charge think it’s a housing issue when we know what it really is. We also got duped into voting for “measure A” which set aside 900 MILLION $ for homeless housing and there is a big sucking sound as the homeless industrial complex leeches off this money but homeless as bad as ever.

The pandemic is similar to the plague in that it is a dark time in history but, it has sparked a radical and necessary change; we are restructuring and planting new seeds. All dark must precede before light.
