There are no new cars I would want unless I'm buying a sports car or hypercar. Suvs are not cars. They're glorified minivans.. I wonder how many true car guys get pissed when they call a SUV a car... Please.. Stop It
The majority of us live in the world where $100+k for a car is ridiculous. Most of us think $50+k is ridiculous. The fact that EVs are appliances and nothing more makes the prices even worse.
Best selling car in the world last year was an EV and under 50K now. Far less maintenance and cost of ownership than gas cars. And sorry if “appliance” is supposed to be a bad term, but if that means the best overall daily driver for the world…so be it. And said appliance improves as you own it. Or buy a BlackBerry of cars.
That skateboard frame design actually scares me. They want the only difference between cars to be voltage and the body. Everything would drive the same apart from minor software changes
April and Hoovie, thanks for your news. I'm an Australian dad of a young daughter, you have been our nightly news this past week over the dinner table after Bondi. That and Jay Leno for desert. Appreciated . Nick.
Two problems with designs in 2024 now. First, since we have learned the "teardrop" is the perfect aerodynamic shape, all car designs now try to deviate as little as possible from this. Every odd angle reduces efficiency, whether gas or electric. Second, we live in a society that is now all about SHOW and not GO. They want "the look" and most don't even know what propels it.
The teardrop shape has been known to be the most aerodynamic efficient for over 100 years now. It's emission standards (for petrol/diesel cars) and range requirements (for electric) that demand these shapes nowadays.
I drive an Rivian R1S. I get compliments on it all the time from people in real life. Most want to know who makes it and where do they make it. When they hear it is American and made in Illinois they are surprised.
Rivian has avoided many of the mentioned "traps" by making a vehicle that is futuristic and not at all ugly. Whether they will be around in 10 years is a bigger question.
Everyone hates it but it’s better than just a generic SUV. A car company finally stops making a economy box for the masses and does something cool and unique and the EV haters still can’t handle it.
Ford had an easy win by designing the Mustang Ev like a regular Mustang instead of a suv, but maybe they were scared it would eat into regular Mustang sales?
The fundamental problem is that most of these new EV designs are "different for the sake of different" and since EVs have different design constraints from ICE cars, I think they're trying to embrace the differences. Also they think the designs need to be a departure from ICEs so that you can tell from a distance that its an EV (or at least this is what the marketing departments at these companies seem to think).
This, and mostly the rule of thumb of "just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you HAVE to do it." The "one huge display to control everything" concept Tesla introduced is a prime example of that as far as I'm concerned. Car manufacturers who want to present their "car of the future" all seem to fall into that same trap of "changing things for the sake of changing things" and more and more people hate it.
@@tjroelsma So then Volkswagen brings back the Microbus retro as a followup to the "New Beetle" but electric. The more things change, the more they remain the same!
@@midnight4109 Volkswagen seems to have realised that you don't have to change things that have proven themselves over and over again just for the sake of changing things. A retro Microbus EV therefore makes far more sense for Volkswagen than going the same way as Tesla.
@@tjroelsma Thank you for the explanation. I have never been a fan of VW and don't understand their approach. Their retro cars share nothing with the original except for a resemblance. The Beetles have all faded in popularity to the point of being discontinued along with everyone's sedans. The Jetta, once their best seller is a sedan. The new e Microbus is an innovative approach in a market with many vans. How long that will last is anyone's guess. At least they recognize the need to go electric in spite of the terrible launch of the ID4.
@@midnight4109 I don't think their style division really understood what retro is. The New Beetle failed because it only vaguely looked like it's ancestor but had nothing in common. The iconic boxer-behind-the-wheels configuration was replaced by an inline-4 front wheel drive configuration. The Jetta went from being a Golf with a boot to a rebadged Audi sedan and it doesn't make any sense anymore. The new Microbus at least has a lot of style elements that trace back to the original VW Microbus, whereas the later VW Microbus only had the name in common. Besides that: VW desperate needs some wins, so the logical thing to do is to look back at what worked for them in the past and revisit those designs.
Hilarious! I just bought a 2014 ELR for 13 grand. Great value for the money now that they are severely depreciated, obviously not when they were new for sure. Typical GM to screw that up with the crazy MSRP. They don't last long around where I live if they are priced right. Yes, it is a fancy Volt . . but it's a great commuter car and at least it still looks better than the newest Cadillac EV. Yes, I used Autotempest to find mine and I bought it the same day it was listed. :)

Take a look at what Volvo has done with EV design and what they’ve done with Polestar as well. Not sure why people sleep on Volvo styling and pedigree.
Yanno that Ronin doesn't look all that bad. I'd be interested if they took the Prius Prime drivetrain and put it in that body and were able to price it in the 30s. It doesn't really need to be that fast. Just saw the interior - scratch that. It needs a complete redesign.
Gotta say after seeing some cybertucks in person, I wasn't that wildly impressed. I had the edition one hummer ev (bought it to sell) and I loved how it wasnt a blob and had such a distinct profile, I am a total hypocrite though because now I have a model x with ludicrus plus from 2019 and I love it😅. Also I had a preorder for the celestiq and the price was the killer for me. The outside looks are okay but I definitely love the interior.
Yeah, especially funny since Cadillac has kept a somewhat traditional ICE look while at the same time being a bit futuristic. The Celestiq breaks from their current lineup, and how many will pay $300k+ for a Cadillac. They need to keep their pricing below 100k or so at least.
Personally, my favorite EV on the market right now is the Hyundai Ioniq 5. I love the retro-modern aesthetic it has going on with the pixel lighting, sawblade wheels (at least on the top tier Limited), the swoopy and futuristic interior, and the overall wedge shape. It's so distinctive without coming off as too risky or polarizing. Sure, it's not for everyone but if I was ever in the market for an EV, this would be my first choice. Its platform trim, the Kia EV6, is also very nice but I'm not too crazy on the rear styling. That's a little much.
Cadillac ELR: were the jabronis at Cadillac really surprised that people didn't want to pay over $75K (in 2014 money!) for a front-wheel-drive four cylinder car based on a Chevy Volt?
The Cadillac one lost it on the rear end, hatch thing. If they did something else with the back end it wouldn't be horrible. But that back hatch thing is hideous.
