    Two problems with designs in 2024 now. First, since we have learned the "teardrop" is the perfect aerodynamic shape, all car designs now try to deviate as little as possible from this. Every odd angle reduces efficiency, whether gas or electric. Second, we live in a society that is now all about SHOW and not GO. They want "the look" and most don't even know what propels it.

    The fundamental problem is that most of these new EV designs are "different for the sake of different" and since EVs have different design constraints from ICE cars, I think they're trying to embrace the differences. Also they think the designs need to be a departure from ICEs so that you can tell from a distance that its an EV (or at least this is what the marketing departments at these companies seem to think).

    • @tjroelsma
      @tjroelsma Před 3 měsíci

      This, and mostly the rule of thumb of "just because you CAN do something, doesn't mean you HAVE to do it." The "one huge display to control everything" concept Tesla introduced is a prime example of that as far as I'm concerned. Car manufacturers who want to present their "car of the future" all seem to fall into that same trap of "changing things for the sake of changing things" and more and more people hate it.

      @midnight4109 Před 2 měsíci

      @@tjroelsma So then Volkswagen brings back the Microbus retro as a followup to the "New Beetle" but electric. The more things change, the more they remain the same!

    • @tjroelsma
      @tjroelsma Před 2 měsíci

      @@midnight4109 Volkswagen seems to have realised that you don't have to change things that have proven themselves over and over again just for the sake of changing things. A retro Microbus EV therefore makes far more sense for Volkswagen than going the same way as Tesla.

    • @midnight4109
      @midnight4109 Před 2 měsíci

      @@tjroelsma Thank you for the explanation. I have never been a fan of VW and don't understand their approach. Their retro cars share nothing with the original except for a resemblance. The Beetles have all faded in popularity to the point of being discontinued along with everyone's sedans. The Jetta, once their best seller is a sedan. The new e Microbus is an innovative approach in a market with many vans. How long that will last is anyone's guess. At least they recognize the need to go electric in spite of the terrible launch of the ID4.

    • @tjroelsma
      @tjroelsma Před 2 měsíci

      @@midnight4109 I don't think their style division really understood what retro is. The New Beetle failed because it only vaguely looked like it's ancestor but had nothing in common. The iconic boxer-behind-the-wheels configuration was replaced by an inline-4 front wheel drive configuration.
      The Jetta went from being a Golf with a boot to a rebadged Audi sedan and it doesn't make any sense anymore.
      The new Microbus at least has a lot of style elements that trace back to the original VW Microbus, whereas the later VW Microbus only had the name in common.
      Besides that: VW desperate needs some wins, so the logical thing to do is to look back at what worked for them in the past and revisit those designs.

    Hilarious! I just bought a 2014 ELR for 13 grand. Great value for the money now that they are severely depreciated, obviously not when they were new for sure. Typical GM to screw that up with the crazy MSRP. They don't last long around where I live if they are priced right. Yes, it is a fancy Volt . . but it's a great commuter car and at least it still looks better than the newest Cadillac EV. Yes, I used Autotempest to find mine and I bought it the same day it was listed. :)

I love the retro-modern aesthetic it has going on with the pixel lighting, sawblade wheels (at least on the top tier Limited), the swoopy and futuristic interior, and the overall wedge shape. It's so distinctive without coming off as too risky or polarizing. Sure, it's not for everyone but if I was ever in the market for an EV, this would be my first choice. Its platform trim, the Kia EV6, is also very nice but I'm not too crazy on the rear styling. That's a little much.

    All the manufacturers making inferior products with obvious drawbacks, putting lipstick on the pigs to make them look "futuristic", then trying to sell them at supercar prices. Shock: sales numbers are poor, unless you generate interest based on something else (eg: cult of personality, empty promises of self-driving robo-taxi usage, gimmicky straight-line acceleration, etc.).
    When EV versions are sold at a discount to ICE/hybrid versions of the same vehicles (as they should be, given utility compromises), and manufacturers eventually lose enough money to abandon the "screens for everything" trend, then we might see volume sales. Until then, hopefully the market continues to crush these half-assed attempts to sell crappy products for big bucks.

    I mostly hate EVs and their designs. That said, I disagree with Hoovie, I liked all of these cars. Except about 3 of them, the Sony, the crushed down Subaru looking thing for 300k, and the canoe.

    I normally agree with your choices on most of these lists. But the cars you picked as ugly? You gotta be kidding! They were all awesome.

    The Cadillac ELR launch commercial was legendary, but offended a lot of people. GM always tries to make the first model standout in an ugly way, then traditionally, refine the looks on the 2nd Gen.

      I never understood why they didn't increase the performance of the ELR over the Volt. Could have been much better.

    I think it’s because the people that buy them are often doing so because they are a bit contrarian. And the styling obviously has to be contrarian as well. Obviously the best looking styles are mainstream so to look different and original it has to look ugly. That’s my theory anyway

    Fun and enjoyable as ever. What a shame Lamborghini didn't revitalize the styling of the Espada for their EV. I totally agree with April's analysis - too much steroids. As for that BMW 3're EV... other than the Hoffmeister kink, no matter how hard I squint my eyes I don't see anything resembling a BMW. At least it's not worse than the current generation. Where's Neelix? Thanks guys!
